Julius Juukulius

Julius Juukulius (ユリウス・ユークリウス) is Anastasia Hoshin's knight and a member of the Royal Guard. He played pivotal roles in both Arc 3 and Arc 6 and a lesser supporting role in Arc 5 and Arc 8. Julius was also one of the main protagonists in The Travelogue of the Finest, as well as a supporting role in The Dream the Lion King Saw.

Though born a commoner, he was adopted into the Juukulius household following his parents’ deaths, where he would eventually become the next in line to take over the house. Joining the Royal Guard, he became known as the Finest of Knights, respected across the entirety of the knights’ order, and later, he’d become Anastasia’s knight, effectively joining her camp during the Royal Selection. Unfortunately, his name was devoured by the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, leaving him forgotten from the memories of all except Natsuki Subaru.

Appearance

Julius is a tall young man of a well-built muscular stature with yellow eyes and gleaming light purple hair that is arranged neatly with a strand hanging down his face. He almost exclusively wears the formal Royal Guard uniform. When he fought with Subaru, he took off his Royal Guard's coat and wore a black suit with blue borders.

In the Water Plumage Inn in Arc 5, he wore a yukata, and for a short period later, he wore a cloak that protected him from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes. After his fight with Reid Astrea in Arc 6, Julius received a cut directly under his left eye. Due to the nature of the cut, the scar is permanent.

During the events of Arc 8, Julius wore Kararagian fashioned clothing: a kimono with a black nagagi and white hakama, a haori the same shade of purple as his hair, a red scarf, his sword at his waist, and a pair of sandals.

Personality

As a member of Lugunica's nobility, Julius acts in a proper fashion, always having an air of nobility and conviction. He is also considerate and doesn't forget to show care toward others. He also shows a strict side, giving out accurate assessments of others whether they're good or bad, which is a result of his upbringing as an elite, whilst currently, he believes that he and others can do better than they currently are.

Despite his demeanor, which clashes with Subaru's modernized world view, Julius tends to worry about others, even those who do not like him. When Subaru lashed out during the Royal Selection Ceremony, despite agreeing with Subaru, because he feared that Subaru would be executed for his remarks by the Royal Army, Julius made an example of him in order to save his life and to quell the army's anger, while resulted in a one-sided and publicly humiliating beating and his own temporary house arrest. Ferris later points out that despite these actions, he held out hope in the young man, even when later they decided they would never be friends. Of course, despite this, Julius still wishes to befriend people such as Subaru, and despite early rocky relationships, he is more than willing to listen to their accounts of important matters, such as believing Subaru on everything he had to say regarding the Witch Cult before the Subjugation of Sloth.

However, as pointed out by Reid Astrea, beneath his noble demeanor, Julius is actually a very insecure person who desperately holds on to his bonds with others. This mindset seems to be the result of his parents' deaths, causing him to seek attention to fill the void in his heart. During his final duel with Reid, Julius acknowledged his flaws and gained mutual respect with the first-generation Sword Saint. He then began working to remake the bonds he lost when after his name was eaten. During said duel with Reid, he also claimed that maintaining his appearance as a noble and chivalrous knight was something he kept up for others. As he was once inspired by such a knight, he wished to keep up his appearance as one of a similar kind so that others may have something to strive for, something which Reid acknowledged and claimed was very similar to a friend of his.

Julius is also as idealistic as Subaru and Emilia, believing that goodness exists in everyone, even those who are classified as evil. In fact, it is for this reason that Julius assists Subaru with handling Spica, who had originally been the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony of the Witch Cult, people who are criminals and hated by everyone in the world, as he believed that she was an inherently new person as she was at this point.

History

Julius was born as the son of Klein Juukulius, who had run away from his noble family and married a commoner woman. Sometime later, his parents died in a flash flood, and Julius was taken in by his uncle, Alviero Juukulius, thus being introduced to his new aristocratic life in the renowned House Juukulius alongside his cousin and new adoptive brother, Joshua Juukulius. Julius lived with his family at House Juukulius. Because House Juukulius is very proud of their heritage and fame as excellent knights, Julius was expected to become a member of the Royal Guard. He spent his whole childhood practicing with the sword and honing his skills as a knight until he achieved the zenith of swordsmanship.

First Mission

Five years before the Royal Selection, Julius was involved in the investigation of the organization led by Reiner Wahrheit alongside Bikram Edditz and Helaine Gatness. With assistance from Reinhard van Astrea, who had infiltrated the organization by disguising himself as a girl named Adelheid, they were able to bring him down and arrest him.

The Dream the Lion King Saw

Roughly 8 to 9 months before the start of the Arc 1, Julius, together with Reinhard van Astrea, formed a friendly bond with a new knight of the Royal Guard–Ferris Argyle. The two knights stood behind Ferris' back, supporting him on his endeavors in the Royal Guard. One faithful day, Julius was tasked with escorting Prince Fourier Lugunica to the Argyle Manor, in order to rescue Crusch Karsten, who has been taken hostage by Biehn Argyle, the lord of the manor. After retrieving the Duchess, Julius swiftly dispatched the remaining undead, who had been resurrected via the Sacrament of the Immortal King.

The Travelogue of the Finest

Roughly 4–5 months before the events of Arc 1 and a couple of months after the mysterious illness took the lives of the entire Royal family, Julius, alongside Reinhard and Felix Argyle, were tasked with escorting two members of the Council of Wise Men, Miklotov McMahon and Bordeaux Zergev, on a diplomatic mission to the neighboring Sacred Vollachia Empire. During their stay, the Ninth ranking Divine General, Balleroy Temeglyph, was seemingly killed, and Reinhard was blamed for it, forcing the Royal Guard trio to "kidnap" the seventy-seventh emperor, Vincent Vollachia, and flee the Crystal Palace. In a nearby forest, they were ambushed by Eighth and Sixth ranking Divine Generals Moguro Hagane and Groovy Gumlet respectively. As Reinhard held back the two Generals, Julius and Ferris fled further ahead with the emperor, but they encountered the First ranking Divine General, Cecilus Segmunt. Julius and Cecilus fought but the Royal Knight was no match for the Divine General. After successfully breaking Cecilus' one of his swords, the Blue Lightning decided to fight him a bit more seriously. Just as he was about to decapitate the Spirit Knight, Reinhard came to the rescue. A short duel between the two strongest swordsmen of their respective nations followed, and Reinhard came out victorious.

After successfully escaping from the three Divine Generals, Julius, Reinhard, Ferris, and Vincent finally had some time to breathe and plan out their next steps. Vincent revealed that Balleroy most likely stands behind the ongoing coup d'état. Before they could devise a plan, however, a group of 30 assassins from the Insect Cage Clan engaged the three Knights and the emperor. However, Reinhard stayed behind and swiftly defeated all thirty of them. Meanwhile, while making their escape from yet another serious threat, Julius, Ferris, and Vincent fell into an ambush created by the thought-to-be-dead Divine General Balleroy Temeglyph, who managed to snipe off Vincent's right arm by the shoulder while riding on his Flying Dragon Carillon. While Ferris healed the mortally wounded emperor, Julius continued deflecting Balleroy's magical snipes, keeping him at bay and defending his friends. After devising a plan and using Ferris as a decoy, Julius was able to pinpoint Balleroy's location despite the man's invisibility, and he hit them with Al Clauzeria, killing Carillon and seriously wounding the Balleroy. Julius and Balleroy then engaged in their final duel, which ended with the Spirit Knight's blade piercing the Divine General's chest, killing him. After the threat was finally dealt with, Julius, Vincent, and Ferris regrouped with Reinhard and returned to the Crystal Palace, resolving the conflict. As a token of gratitude, the emperor signed a non-aggression pact between the Empire and the Kingdom, marking the Kingdom's ambassadors' mission as successful.

Roughly a month after Balleroy's rebellion, Julius and Ferris encountered Cecilus in a tavern located in the Royal Capital. Due to the danger that the Divine General presented, the duo accompanied him to a tea house located on the outskirts of the city, where Cecilus informed them of his plans to fight with the Sword Saint Reinhard van Astrea. However, because of Reinhard's absence due to him being on a mission at the Holy Kingdom of Gusteko's borders with Lugunica, Julius had no other option but to secretly accept the Divine General as a guest in his mansion, since his presence in the Royal Capital was illegal. After four days of hiding a Divine General inside House Juukulius, Julius and Ferris were suddenly called to Captain Marcos Gildark's office, where the Fourth ranking Divine General, Chisha Gold, was waiting. The two knights were then given a task to accompany Chisha to his needs in the Royal Capital, and the trio set out to find the person Chisha was after. Arriving just in time, they were able to prevent Cecilus from beheading the High Count Gramdart Holstoy who was behind the failed coup d'état and had fled the Empire. Having fulfilled their mission, Chisha and Cecilus were prepared to return back to the Empire with High Count Holstoy, but they were stopped by Marcos, who arranged a proxy match between Cecilus and Reinhard.

Lugunican Papers

In the year following the Subjugation of the White Whale, she was requested an interview by Shorty Megan and Lululala. Already having a meeting with her rival and fellow candidate Priscilla Barielle, she decided to schedule the interview on the same day. There, they discussed their opinions on the Royal Selection and the other candidates. In particular, both Anastasia and Priscilla claimed that Emilia didn’t stand a chance, as public discrimination against her was heavy as she was a perfect resemblance and of the same race as the Witch of Envy. Even with the slaying of the White Whale and the Sin Archbishop of Sloth under her belt, they claimed that it was an achievement the reflected more on her knight than her, which even Julius agreed with, though Priscilla’s knight Al argued that his achievements also reflect on her. Eventually, the interview came to a close.

Anastasia's Companion Searching Chronicle

Following the events of the Pleiades Watchtower Expedition, Anastasia, alongside Julius and Eridna, after leaving the sealed Roy Alphard with the Lugunican government to be imprisoned within the Prison Tower, intending to search for Subaru and Rem, who had been taken by a shadow, decided to enter Vollachia via Kararagi through official channels. Upon returning to the City-States, after meeting with the League of Cities and reuniting with Halibel, they learned of a startling incident in Nanou in which the living had been replaced by the undead. Believing the situation might be involved in their goal, Anastasia hired Halibel to accompany her to Vollachia, where, along the way, he explained to Julius the reason for his acquaintance with Anastasia and Ricardo.

Kararagi Reaper Incident

Shortly after the events of the Great Disaster, Anastasia, accompanied by Julius, Halibel, and Eridna, returned to Kararagi, where they decided to report their discoveries to the mayor of the Third City Ivada, Orgo Hayata. Unfortunately, there is yet another problem: the windstorm created by the Slasher, Zarestia, that was thrust upon Banan. After hearing of this, he, Eridna, Halibel, and Anastasia made their way to Banan to meet up with Ricardo. Sometime after Ricardo quelled Zarestia's rage, Anastasia's group arrived and were led to the holding cells in Riften Magoji's mansion, where Zarestia was being held. During their conversation, Anastasia learned that Riften went missing, Julius noticed that Zarestia was a Great Spirit and introduced himself, and Halibel unintentionally riled her up by noticing her strange constitution, that something was missing. However, when Anastasia mentioned Zarestia being responsible for other such town-destroying wind cataclysms, Zarestia declared otherwise, saying that she only rampaged in Banan. Shortly afterward, this is confirmed when a massive tornado appeared outside of Banan, not made by Zarestia. After giving her orders and securing Zarestia's assistance, the group made their way to stop the tornado.

Abilities

Divine Protection (加護 Kago): Julius has the Divine Protection of Gathering Spirits (誘精の加護 Yūsei no Kago), which enables him to see, talk, and be liked by spirits, though he has to work hard to actually get liked by spirits.

Spirit Affinity: Julius has a rare innate gift to form contracts with spirits.

Spirit User (精霊使い, Seirei Tsukai): Julius is contracted with six spirits. They are known as Ia (イア, red/fire), Kua (クア, blue/water), Aro (アロ, green/wind), Iku (イク, yellow/earth), In (イン, orange/white/Yang), and Nes (ネス, purple/black/Yin). Julius has appropriate crystals for each one of his six spirits, where they reside when not materialized.[1] His ability to use them was temporary severed when his name was eaten. However, he has since severed his contract and forged it anew, so he able to use them again. Since then, the former quasi-spirits bloomed into proper spirits. As Julius is also a knight, he prefers to be called a Spirit Knight (精霊騎士, Seirei Kishi), a title he later shares with Subaru.

Spiritual Arts (精霊術, Seirei Jutsu): Julius is able to use spiritual arts with any of his six spirits which afford him a variety of specialties from offense to support like healing. After his quasi-spirits bloomed into spirits, his power greatly increased. Without his spirits, he has a natural affinity for wind magic.

  • Healing Magic (治癒魔法, Chiyu Mahō): Julius can use water mana via Kua to heal his allies' wounds.
  • Enhanced Strength: Julius can call on In to boost his strength and agility, granting him superhuman abilities for a period of time.
  • Yin Magic Sealing: Julius is able to employ a type of seal made of Yin Magic that can both prevent the target from dying and keep them from moving. It is the same kind of seal that was used to seal the Witch of Envy. According to Al, it works similarly to Ol Shamak, and according to Roy Alphard, anyone sealed this way can still somewhat sense the outside world.
  • Combination of Spirits: Julius can combine two or more spirits in order to get himself and his friends out of tough situations, as seen when he called upon Aro and Iku in order to blow away the Imperial Soldiers and incapacitate them by encasing them into small earth domes.
    • Ul Gola (ウル・ゴーラ): Julius calls on Ia and Aro to produce a powerful magical firestorm by combining both Fire and Wind magic.
    • Nect (ネクト):
      Julius and Subaru Using Nect

      Julius and Subaru Using Nect.

A high-level magic that enables people to share senses within the effect area by connecting their gates. It is considered to be difficult to use, however, In and Nes can use it by pairing Yin and Yang Magic together and tuning the interference of mana between people. If it is too weak, the thoughts won't get through, yet if it's too strong, people won't know where the line between them and other people begins. Performed with In and Nes.
    • Multi-Elemental Barrier: Julius can combine the elements of all six of his spirits to create a dome-like barrier around himself and his targets. Ordinarily, this is used for defense, but it can also be used to trap aerial opponents such as Balleroy Temeglyph near the ground.

Magic Swordplay: Julius is highly skilled with a sword as he has reached the peak of his swordsmanship and can use spirits to further augment or enhance his technique. At one point, his strength was classified to be roughly that of a Second-Class General or higher of the Vollachia Empire.

  • Clarista (クラリスタ):
    Julius Using Al Clarista

    Julius Using Al Clarista.

Julius imbues his sword with the power of his six spirits. Clarista and its different levels are Julius' original magic.
    • Al Clarista (アル・クラリスタ): Al Clarista allows Julius to imbue his sword with the power of his six quasi-spirits (after his fight with Reid Astrea, he can do that with his newly bloomed spirits), cladding his blade in a brilliant rainbow light. According to him, when this spell is in use, he can cut almost everything with his sword, no matter the toughness. Julius displayed this ability two times, roughly half a year before the start of the Royal Selection on his diplomatic journey to the Sacred Vollachia Empire. There, he fought the First and Ninth ranking Divine Generals on separate occasions, and managed to break the former's 5th best sword, and kill the latter. Julius is also capable of using the long-range version of Clarista where the spell takes the form of a beam of pure destructive energy. The light is capable of cutting through anything and everything in its path. After Julius reforged his contract with his quasi-spirits, the power and range of the attack greatly increased, surprising even Julius. During his battle with the Ninth ranking Divine General of the Vollachia Empire, Julius used this spell to melt away the General's spear and pierce his chest, killing him.
  • Al Clauzeria (アル・クラウゼリア):
    Julius Using Al Clauseria

    Julius Using Al Clauzeria.

When Al Clauzeria is casted, six different colored spirits start circling around Julius and join into one whirling rainbow-hued vortex of light which is shot out from the tip of his sword. Immediately following the impact of the rainbow light, the torrent of light explodes in a sizeable shock wave that sends his opponents flying. The wall as well as the vortex are composed of six elements, which are able to repel any sort of magic that is casted against it as well as any and all physical attacks. Furthermore, in the novelization of Julius' duel with Petelgeuse, the rainbow shockwave started expanding directly from his own body, rather being shot out from the tip of his sword, easily purifying away close to a hundred unseen hands that enveloped the Knight from all sides, just seconds prior. Despite the small difference in execution, both versions have the same effect.
  • Al Cranvel (アル・クランヴェル): Al Cranvel is Julius' secret technique he developed long ago but never managed to properly utilize, due to his lack of experience. After he forged a new contract with his newly bloomed spirits, Julius called upon their power and clad himself in their sixfold power, greatly increasing his speed and overall power. To the other party, Julius appeared as if he was swallowed alive by a rainbow. This sword skill is noted as Julius' ultimate attack. Debuting this trump card during his final duel with legendary Reid Astrea, it played a vital role in helping him overcome the obstacle known as the first generation's Sword Saint.

Equipment: Julius wielded a sword, which was a prized heirloom of House Juukulius. He spent years mastering its use. During the events of Arc 6, however, the sword broke when Julius fought against Reid for the first time. Following that duel, Julius resorted to using a spare sword he brought with him. According to Subaru's observation from one of the failed loops, Julius' new sword looked cheap and mass-produced weapon, a model likely used by many of the other knights.[2]

Immense Power: Though not nearly on the same level as Reinhard or Marcos Gildark, Julius is among the strongest individuals of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica. At one point, he was stated to be skilled and powerful enough to be able to reach the title of a Second-Class General in the Imperial Army of the Vollachia Empire, a position reserved for individuals who are either unparalleled tacticians, have distinguished themselves with excellent leadership capabilities, or stand out from the rest in terms of overall strength and skill in combat, but are not walking monsters capable of single-handedly turning the tide of a major battle. Though almost completely outmatched in both instances, Julius displayed enough strength to survive battles with legends of such strength as the Blue Lightning and the first Sword Saint and even withstand their onslaught of attacks for a short time. After the contract with his spirits was renewed, his strength was enhanced significantly further to the point that he was able to easily defeat the undead Sphinx with little resistance.
