Rachins Hoffman (ラチンス・ホフマン), commonly known as Chin (チン), is a runaway noble who was one of the three thugs that attacked Subaru at the very start of the story. He later joined the Felt Camp when Felt employed him after the Royal Selection began. He plays a supporting role in Arc 9, a minor supporting role in Arc 5 and an antagonistic role in Arc 1 and Arc 3.

Appearance
Rachins is a man who has an unusual white complexion, black sanpaku eyes, and long, unkept grayish blue hair that has pink at its ends. He dresses in a tattered uniform, wears chains around his wrists and throat, maintains a large yellow earring on his left ear, and often sticks out his elongated tongue, which has a silver ring ornament on its right side.
Personality
As a thug, Rachins acted cowardly, lustful, and impolite. He generally is prone to anger and is often viewed as a blockhead and hooligan. He tried to mug people with his two friends to get by when they resided in the slums, but they found a way to escape when a situation became unfavorable. He was also not above being lecherous and harassing Priscilla. Although Rachins makes the most decisions between him and his other two friends, he is also quite easy to sway.[1]
In spite of Rachins’s many personality defects, he is a shrewd and clever man with some degree of bravery. As a runaway noble who was raised in the Hoffman family, he learned the broad knowledge of a royal advisor and is skilled at deceiving others into getting a desired outcome. However, he scorns his father and chose to cut ties with his family,[2][3] even though he considers him respectable.
Rachins is also willing to take extreme measures to bring down his enemy, and his will to accomplish his tasks is strong. Just to take down Al and his comrades, Rachins was willing to use a trick Al Goa to not only incinerate all of his surroundings to ash, but also himself. Even when it was seen through and he was being beaten in order to force him to stop, he continued to try and cast the spell until he was rendered unconscious.
History
Rachins Hoffman was born as a noble from the Royal Capital of Lugunica, to Rickert Hoffman and an unnamed woman. However, after unknown events, he left his family and began living in the slums. According to Gaston, he found Rachins in a back alley. Thinking he was like a ragged piece of cloth at the time, Gaston chose to extend Rachins a hand after being convinced to do so by Camberley.[4]
The Travelogue of the Finest
Roughly 3 to 4 months before Subaru's arrival, Rachins, Gaston, and Camberley met an Imperial traitor, who paid the trio and fifteen other thugs a fair amount of gold coins in order to tail a Divine General who was after his head. The thugs disobeyed the orders and lured the swordsman into a dark alley, wanting to attack, beat and rob the man. However, as they were dealing with Cecilus Segmunt, the strongest person from the Sacred Vollachia Empire and one of the three men who are about as skilled as Reinhard, they were defeated within a second and left beaten half to death. Following their arrest by the Knight guards who rushed the scene soon after, the three thugs were then approached by Julius Juukulius, Ferris, and Chisha Gold, who wanted to know about Cecilus' location. Upon being promised freedom, they spilled the beans and were subsequently freed, with the money they would have gotten from Gramdart.
Felt-chan Gathers Thugs
After the Royal Selection Ceremony, Felt recruited Rachins, as well as Gaston and Camberley, to join the Felt Camp. They accepted her offer, thus becoming participants in the Royal Selection. Since then, Reinhard van Astrea started to train all three of them so they would grow stronger with his help.
Abilities
Magic (魔法, Mahō): Rachins is able to use fire magic. After training under Ezzo Cadner, he became capable of changing the size of his spells to disguise them as other spells: by expanding a regular Goa in size, he can make it appear as if it was an Al Goa; conversely, by thinning an Al Goa as much as possible, he can disguise it as a flame even weaker than a regular Goa, tricking his enemy into attacking it and setting off an incredibly powerful explosion in the process.
- Goa (ゴーア): Rachins manifests a blaze of fire which incinerates a foe, though the flame was noted to be rather underwhelming when he first used it. He primarily uses this attack like a signal flare meant to summon Reinhard to his location, but he has learned to use it better by Arc 9.
- El Goa (エル・ゴーア): Rachins produces a larger flame with a larger explosion than Goa.
- Al Goa (アル・ゴーア): Rachins lets loose a massive fireball, scorching away everything in its path.
Equipment:
- Knife: Rachins carries a knife with him that he uses to threaten people, though he is inexperienced in using them properly.
- Conversation Mirror: A Meteor that was duplicated by the Felt Camp. Anyone who has a mirror is capable of speaking to the other person who has one.
Training: After being employed by Felt, he started to get trained by Reinhard and has developed considerable power. He was also trained by Ezzo Cadner in magic.
Trivia
- The nicknames of Ton, Chin, and Kan are a play on the Japanese word tonchinkan, which means irrelevant or inconsistent.
- According to the author, Ton, Chin, and Kan don't play an active role after Arc 1 until Arc 8.[5]
- As the original plan for Arc 7 changed and it was split into two separate arcs, it can be assumed that this statement about Arc 8 now applies to Arc 9.
