House Karsten

House Karsten (カルステン家, Karusuten-ke) is a noble house in the Kingdom of Lugunica, currently headed by matriarch Duchess Crusch Karsten, who is also currently participating in the Royal Selection as a candidate to become the 42nd King of Lugunica. The family holds the court rank of Duke.

Information

Throughout centuries, the noble House of Karsten found itself as one of the most faithful supporters of the Lugunica monarchy, dutifully serving them without fail. Due to their unyielding loyalty, the House has been recognized as the King's most loyal subjects and was in turn, granted the crest of a lion baring its fangs: a symbol which once belonged to none other than the Lugunica family itself, which served as the Kingdom's coat of arms.

After the covenant with the Dragon was made, the old crest, the lion crest, gave way to the new crest; that of the Dragon. The gift of the lion crest to the Karsten house is a consistent reminder of the House's greatest accomplishment, that being its many centuries of loyalty to the crown and is pridefully displayed in all manners by its members and associates.

As expected of a house so highly regarded, the Karsten family is fabulously wealthy as well; able to sport the finest estates in some of the best lands in the kingdom. For example, within the Noble District in the Royal Capital, the one villa that stands above every other is in possession of none other than the Karsten family. Despite it being as luxurious and extravagant as the main Mathers domain, it is only used when the House's patriarch has important business in the Royal Capital. In that case, it is large enough to act as a military base. Its estate front lawn itself is vast in size, about to field a makeshift camp and hospital. The main mansion is located in the very south of the Lifaus Plains. It's stated to be much more spacious and luxurious than the one in the Royal Capital.

History

Note: The characters within the story rarely describe historical events within helpful context, so the unit BA, “Before Arrival”, and AA, “After Arrival”, will be used to place moments in time with the best available knowledge. Both are in reference to Natsuki Subaru's arrival in the new world. Also note that the units are not official.

Roughly 400 years BA

• Farsale Lugunica creates a covenant with the Divine Dragon. Once the covenant was established, the Kingdom became known as the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica and the royal family coat of arms shifted from a symbol of the Lion to that of the Dragon. The king decided to pass the insignia down to a noble family which helped the Kingdom out the most, and so the emblem of the lion baring its fangs was passed to the House of Karsten.

20 BA

• Crusch Karsten was born to Meckart and Helena Karsten. Sometime after Crusch's birth, Helena passed away due to unknown reasons.

Between 20-11 BA

• Crusch met Fourier Lugunica in the gardens of the castle, where they became friends and where Fourier inspired her to live how she wanted.
• At some point, Crusch began practicing with her sword skills.

11 BA

• After hearing disturbing rumors of House Argyle's patriarch abusing and torturing his son, Meckart and Crusch launched an investigation into them, and as a result, they had the House stripped of their territories, assets, and nobility, and Felix was adopted into House Karsten.

6 BA

• Felix assists Fourier in escaping from a political marriage with the daughter of a Gustekan archbishop, resulting in her marrying Misère instead.
• Felix learns under Garitch Fabless for three months in the Royal Treatment Center to use Healing Magic until the man's death. At some point after, Ferris took over Garitch's title of the Blue.

3 BA

• The Foutour Plains located in the Karsten territory is ravaged by one of the Three Great Witchbeasts: the Great Rabbit. Crusch fended off the calamitous witchbeast and immediately afterward took part in the party to celebrate her birthday, where after showing both her beauty and her strength in combat, she earned the nickname of the Valkyrie.
• A couple of months after the incident, Crusch took her father's position to become the matriarch of the Karsten House.

1 BA

• Felix was recommended for the Royal Guard by the Royal Treatment Center and Prince Fourier, leading to his joining the military.
• After hearing of new rumors of Biehn Argyle, Crusch investigated him once again, deciding to meet with him without Felix's awareness, where she discovered Biehn's collusion with Miles, a Vollachian soldier, to take in slaves for human experimentation in an effort to perfect the Sacrament of the Immortal King. However, she was drugged by Biehn and placed in a cell in his estate.
• After learning of Crusch's predicament, Felix and Fourier lead an assault alongside the Karsten militia on the Argyle estate and their numerous corpse soldiers.
• With help from Hannah Regret, Crusch was able to free herself and cut through him and the corpse soldiers with him, and she escaped and reunited with Julius Juukulius and Felix. Immediately after, they escaped the burning building and met up with the prince, who soon after collapsed from his disease.

8-9 months BA

• Fourier dies of his disease in Crusch's lap.
• Crusch shows qualifications for participating in the Royal Selection, making her one of the five candidates for the throne of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica. Immediately after this discovery, she knighted Felix and decided to participate in the Selection in order to end the contract with the Divine Dragon and lead to the country's independence from greater powers.
• Sometime after, Crusch begins a greater distribution of iron weapons and armor, and she improves the training of the military.

2-4 months BA

• Felix travels to the Vollachia Empire alongside Julius, Reinhard van Astrea, Bordeaux, and Miklotov McMahon in an effort to secure a non-aggression pact throughout the Royal Selection. Despite a conflict that led to a battle with the Nine Divine Generals, particularly one of the supposed masterminds of the rebellion, Balleroy Temeglyph, they ultimately succeed and return to the Kingdom.
• After meeting with Cecilus Segmunt and later Chisha Gold in the Royal Capital, Felix and Julius accompany them until the capture the Vollachian traitor Gramdart Holstoy. Their task to accompany them ended after the Royal Guard commander, Marcos Gildark, set up a proxy match between Reinhard and Cecilus.

Before 0 AA

• Sometime after creating the Crusch Camp, Crusch and Felix witness an argument between Wilhelm van Astrea and Bordeaux Zergev regarding the White Whale. After he was temporarily arrested, she offered him a chance to kill the whale if he joined her camp, and after he agreed, the two regularly practiced swordsmanship together.

2 months AA

• Crusch signs an alliance with Emilia Camp. Using Anastasia Hoshin's help, they first defeat one of the Three Great Witchbeasts known as the White Whale during the Subjugation of the White Whale and soon after aid in defeating the Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Sloth in the Subjugation of Sloth.
• On her way back, Crusch's convoy was attacked by the Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Greed and Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. The convoy got completely annihilated. Casualties were high, with Crusch temporarily losing her right arm and getting her memories eaten by Gluttony.

Between 2 months and 1 year, 2 months AA

• Shorty Megan and Lululala visit the Karsten estate and have an interview with Crusch and Felix, where they give their opinions on the Royal Selection and whose camp to watch.
• According to rumors, Meckart returns to assist Crusch with running her territory.

1 year and 2 months AA

• Alongside the other camps participating in the Royal Selection, Crusch is invited to the Watergate City of Priestella as Anastasia Hoshin promises her info regarding the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. Soon after their arrival, the city is besieged and taken over by the Witch Cult. The camps are forced to work together in order to defeat and drive off the 6 Sin Archbishops who simultaneously made their appearance in the city, Gluttony included.
• Crusch is cursed by the Sin Archbishop of Lust and is left bedridden. After the end of the Battle for Priestella, Felix and Wilhelm continue to care for her with no improvements.

1 year and 8 months AA

• After hearing of the conquering of the Pleiades Watchtower, despite their worry about not hearing of the status of those who partook in the expedition, Wilhelm and Felix travel to the Royal Capital to learn what went down, where, after meeting with Otto Suwen of the Emilia Camp, they became involved with the conflict surrounding Aldebaran.
