Appearance
Carol was a beautiful young woman with medium length blonde hair and green eyes. When she was young, she wore a blue and white outfit along with black stockings and armor.
Personality
On the surface, she comes across as a stoic woman with a strait-laced personality who rarely minces her words when she has something to say. However, Carol has a more nuanced and softer side that is typically reserved for those who have earned her trust. Her fierce loyalty and personal affection for Theresia can also sometimes overpower her usually rational sound judgements and reveal more competitive and childish characteristics, particularly when in the presence of Wilhelm, who stole her master's heart. She has shown to be especially soft around Grimm. Otherwise, she is a very dutiful person.
History
Sword Demon Love Song
Carol was born as the heir to House Remendis, a warrior class noble family that has produced excellent swordsmen that would serve House Astrea for generations. Two years before the Demi-Human War began in earnest, when Theresia had awoken to the Divine Protection of Sword Saint at age 13, a 14-year-old Carol, who had been displaying skills among the best of her generation in her House, was assigned to be Theresia's personal attendant. Although their relationship had started off somewhat rough, after attempting to challenge her and being swiftly defeated, she learned of her Divine Protections and saw her genuinely crying for hurting her. Gaining immense respect for her, she decided to loyally follow her.
However, Theresia soon lost the ability to smile after her failure in the beginning of the Demi-Human War which resulted in one of her brothers' death. With Theresia unable to wield her blade, Carol took her place by Roswaal's side to protect her. Following the Battle of Castour Field, the Kingdom decided to call in the magic specialist Roswaal J. Mathers to analyze the magic circles used. When the Zergev Squadron arrived at Castour Field, they officially met Roswaal and Carol. However, it took no time for Carol and Wilhelm to start arguing, Grimm having to step between them. With everyone split into group, Grimm kept Carol company to keep her mind off of Wilhelm. After arriving and allowing Roswaal to check the circle, after she claimed it would be a threat to the Kingdom, Grimm had a bad feeling that he thought Wilhelm might share. That feeling turned out to be correct when the undead Tholter fired arrows at them and corpse soldiers began rising. Leaving Grimm to cover Roswaal alongside Carol, Wilhelm went to fight the undead, where he met Sphinx. With Roswaal intending to join the fight, furious, Sphinx decided to retreat, leaving everyone to clean up the undead. With some help from Roswaal, Wilhelm realized that Tholter was the main corpse soldier to defeat, and after giving him the push he needed to overcome his trauma and fight, Grimm ran forward and put his old friend to rest. Shortly after this, Carol spoke to Grimm, who was still fearful after having killed Tholter, and after calming him down, he fell in love with her. Afterward, meeting up with the Bordeaux and Pivot, Roswaal relayed Sphinx's identity and the threat she bore.
For 3 years, he and the other members of the Zergev Squadron, and often Roswaal and Carol, were sent to some of the most dangerous and brutal battles of the war. Once, while speaking with Grimm, he alleviated her fears over both Wilhelm and her own master, saying that people could change. Before leaving, she offered to teach Grimm to use the shield, leading to their regular meetups to train. Likewise, more and more of Theresia's family began to die in the war, breaking her heart further. With people trying to convince her to join the army, Carol, who was upset that she couldn't help Theresia, convinced her to go outside and away from everyone, which resulted in the girl making a flower field in the slums. One day, however, when she went to retrieve her, she found her smiling, with the girl saying that she met a rude boy that day. In time, she learned that boy was Wilhelm, and at times, she would even spy on her conversations. Though frustrated that it was Wilhelm's influence that was healing her, as she still didn't get along very well with him, she was grateful and started harboring more respect and envy for him for letting Theresia smile again. One day, she met Grimm and gave him a locket with a flower as a good luck charm. However, that day, everyone met their new commander, Leip Barielle, who struck Wilhelm for his disrespect. Though Roswaal pacified him and led him away, Carol followed, still worried about Wilhelm.
During the Battle of Aihiya Swamp, Carol joined Roswaal and ten other knights to investigate the location of a magic circle, which activated and brought everyone to their knees. Not wanting to allow it to be destroyed, Sphinx appeared and got in her way, killing several of the knights in an attempt to convince Roswaal to join her. However, Roswaal managed to easily corner her, causing Sphinx to fly away. After Roswaal destroyed the circle, Carol was worried for Grimm's safety on the field. In the month following the battle, Carol visited Grimm after he lost his voice due to a throat injury, apologizing to and crying for him. This led to him kissing her and their becoming lovers. During a later meeting with Grimm, she gave him a House Remendis shield as a present for surviving. Later, she visited Wilhelm when Grimm wanted him to visit, and she chastised him for the way he treated Grimm.
A little while after this, uprisings started all over the country, forcing the regional lords to take care of them on their own. With the Zergev Squadron rebuilt and left behind, they prepared to move as well when Wilhelm realized that the enemies' movement was a distraction so that the leaders could attack the castle and the king. With the rest of the unit, Grimm, who returned to duty, and Bordeaux Zergev trusting his judgment, they made for the castle, and with Roswaal and Carol's appearances, they were allowed inside. With the squad split up to cover the castle, Wilhelm took his group to the chapel while Bordeaux split off from them. Confronting Valga and Sphinx, the former of which had enhanced is size via a magic circle and his ancestors' bones, he had his companions chase after Sphinx while he battled Valga. With Carol's aerial combat, Roswaal's techniques, and Grimm's defenses, they cornered Sphinx and forced her to retreat, with Roswaal chasing after her and leaving the rest to assist Wilhelm, who eventually managed to defeat Valga.
Within the following year of the Invasion of the Royal Castle, having been knighted and being made the vice commander of the Zergev Squadron, Wilhelm started to become friendlier to his comrades, to the point that he would even share drinks with and tease Grimm about his relationship with Carol, much to Carol's frustration. However, one day, when Roswaal informed him that his territory was in danger, he disappeared without telling anyone. Learning about it, Carol decided to inform Theresia, who chose to pick up a sword to protect Wilhelm. Later, they arrived in the Trias Domain with the Zergev Squadron, where Theresia started killing their enemies, much to her sadness and Carol's worry. After Battle of the Trias Domain, once Theresia spoke with Wilhelm, Wilhelm disappeared for years. It wasn't until after the war was over that anyone saw him again, when he challenged and defeated Theresia in the middle of her award ceremony, and Carol, who was worried for him for both her and Theresia's sakes, was happy to see him again and grateful that he managed to take away the reason for Theresia to wield the sword anymore.
Sword Demon Love Story
After Theresia dragged Wilhelm to her mansion and forced him to take a bath, he spoke with Carol and Grimm, the former of which lashed out at him, and he learned of her position as Theresia's attendant. After this, they informed him that he was unemployed, leading him to finding a way to rejoin. Later, upon Carol and Grimm's return to the mansion, Carol chided Wilhelm for upsetting Theresia and went to speak with her while Wilhelm and Grimm finished all of the food that Theresia prepared. The next day over breakfast, Carol warned him not to do anything that would upset Theresia. The day after that, Wilhelm found himself face to face with the best warriors the country had to offer, including Bordeaux, Carol, and Grimm. With Gionis and Miklotov overseeing the battle, Wilhelm fought and defeated all forty soldiers. However, after Theresia arrived and chided the king for allowing this, it was revealed that she would have been let go of her position if she married Wilhelm, much to everyone's but the king and Miklotov's shock. Wilhelm accepted this, and they embraced, Theresia calling him Wilhelm van Astrea, much to Carol's relief.
Three months later, she and Theresia went to confront Theresia's father, Veltol. When they met, Theresia was quick to chide her father for his actions, and she even threatened to leave House Astrea because of him. Even Carol and her mother, Tishua, joined in to chide him. However, she believed in Wilhelm, and she knew that he would arrive on time for their wedding, despite her father's meddling. The next day, wearing her wedding dress, she waited patiently for the return for the Zergev Squadron with Carol and her parents. Eventually, Bordeaux arrived and informed her of the squad's return, and soon after, her wedding took place. Carol was one of the many attendees who watched the two get married. Towards the end of the reception, Theresia threw the bouquet to her, leading to Grimm taking it, pulling her close, and holding the bouquet in the air, essentially declaring that they would be next.
In the month that followed, Veltol made numerous appearances, much to Theresia's frustration, and eventually, he even suggested going along on the honeymoon as well, leading to another argument. However, with help from Tishua, they were able to get him to leave. Given two months for their honeymoon, they prepared to leave, taking Carol as Theresia's attendant, and they decided to visit the cities to the south of the Royal Capital. After first visiting Flanders and Theresia insisting they not visit her home in Hakuchuri, they made for Picoutatte, where her father was waiting, leading to another argument. However, with his reason for visiting to collect the present for his wife, they accompanied him to the Suwen Company. With Veltol asking Wilhelm and Carol to allow him and Theresia to shop together, they left to observe the town. However, when a commotion at the shop ensued, they returned to find a ton of blood and Theresia, and they were soon rushed to the hospital, where Veltol lay cursed and injured, as informed to them by Garitch Fabless, who attempted to heal him. Accordingly, the only way to remove the curse was to cut it off at the source. Soon after, Yaktol Suwen, who ran the shop, informed the group of the message given by the perpetrator of the incident, Stride Vollachia, that they would be waiting at a great bridge in Picoutatte's west district with the source of the curse. Impatient, Carol ran off with Yaktol in search of the man while Theresia resolved herself to go to the bridge with Wilhelm.
The next morning, Carol returned, unable to find Stride. After Yaktol then provided Wilhelm with his new sword that Veltol picked out for him, he and Theresia left for the bride where Stride and his champion Kurgan were waiting. Meanwhile, Carol remained behind at the hospital to watch over Veltol. Eventually, the curse was lifted, and when Theresia and Wilhelm returned, she informed them as much. Later, she and Theresia bought an accessory for Veltol to gift Tishua. However, when Theresia got into another argument with his dad, she and Carol left o greet Tishua, who was informed of the situation and decided to come to Picoutatte.
