White Dragon's Scales

White Dragon's Scales Light Novel Design

The White Dragon's Scales (白竜の鱗, Hakuryū no Uroko) are a mercenary group currently employed by Kiritaka Muse. The group debuted in Arc 5.

Information

The White Dragon's Scales are a veteran mercenary group of around ten men that is currently working to gain funds for their homeland, which is affected by the Black Serpent's poison.[1][2] One day, they were betrayed by a member of the group, who stole the funds they had for himself. At Liliana's suggestion, Kiritaka decided to hire them to protect his wealth, and in return, he would use the Muse Company to provide funds for mending their homeland's contaminated soil.[3]

Each member wears white robe-like coats with the design of a dragon's horn on its hood, and they are all armed with two short swords. Although the group is made up of expert fighters, they were no match for Lye Batenkaitos, which resulted in at least four members becoming the victims of the Sin Archbishop. Following Lye's death at the end of Arc 6, the status of the four men still remains unknown.

History

The White Dragon's Scales had amassed a fortune in an effort to restore their homeland from the effects of the Black Serpent's pestilence. However, the man responsible for safekeeping what they owned had taken everything and built a mansion in the town of Warwar, where he hid the fortune. The mercenaries located his whereabouts and were planning to get their money back until he discovered their intentions and hid the money in a cave behind a meteor door, teaching Liliana Masquerade, a bard who was visiting the village, the song that was the key to open the door, and with the meteor's effects, made it so that nobody who sung the song other than her could open the door. As a result, the mercenaries pursued Liliana for some time before her visit to Roswaal Manor in an attempt to reclaim their money.

A Heroic Tale Starting from Zero

While Liliana, alongside Natsuki Subaru and Rem, was attempting to retrieve luggage that she had left in Arlam Village while visiting the mansion, they encountered four men wearing white clothing blocking the entrance to the village. They approached Subaru with weapons in hand and attempted to launch an attack, but Rem easily sent the men flying with her fists. The men, carrying the comrades who had been rendered unconscious, retreated afterwards. With Roswaal's approval, she took temporary refuge at the mansion afterwards. For three days, an unrelated group of thugs launched over thirty attacks, and each time they were repelled by Rem, until the white-clothed men attacked them again and were also defeated by the maid. After Subaru and Beatrice resolved the issue with the thugs and captured them and their employer, Kiritaka Muse, he and Liliana went to prepare the latter's things, only for the white-clothed mercenaries to knock the two out. As they came to, their representative, Dynas Trussardi, who did not name himself to them, apologized for the rough treatment the two faced and introduced their group, the White Dragon's Scales.

Dynas revealed the circumstances that led them to needing Liliana. However, when they reached the door, she refused to abide by their wishes because she did not want to sing a song in a context different from how she believed they were meant to be enjoyed. Resisting attempts at persuasion from the other mercenaries, Subaru proposed to Dynas that his restraints be loosened so he could talk to Liliana. Dynas accepted, and Subaru had the man come with him to speak to Liliana. He ended up agreeing with Liliana's logic, rousing anger in the mercenaries other than Dynas, who was panicking over the reactions of his comrades, until suggesting that they dig around the wall instead. Eventually, Ram came to inform them of the results of her investigation, confirming the identities of the mercenaries, that the old man who betrayed them had died of illness a few days ago, and that the locations of two items he purchased had yet to be confirmed. The first was the door meteor, but before she could say what the second was, a roar shook the cave, and she said that it was a Lauda witchbeast he had procured from the black market.

Dynas ordered a retreat due to their inability to engage with the Lauda. As he was fleeing the cave, he caught sight of Subaru and Liliana, with the latter of whom wanting to retrieve the Lyulyre case from her mother still near the door, and told them it was still in there. Though Subaru managed to retrieve it for Liliana, after Emilia arrived at the scene and Puck slew the Lauda, the cave began to collapse due to the witchbeast, with the fortune still inside. Without the chance to reclaim their lost funds, the White Dragon's Scales were left at a loss, unable to provide aid to their families in their homeland that was affected by the Black Serpent. At Liliana's suggestion Kiritaka decided to hire them, offering to have the Muse Company be responsible for removing the contamination of the soil. Liliana offering to do something to thank Subaru for retrieving her Lyulyre case, so he requested her to sing a song. She chose to perform The Sky Overtaking the Morning Glow, causing the people around her, including the mercenaries, to be moved to tears. Once everything was said and done, Kiritaka and the White Dragon's Scales set out for Priestella, with Liliana deciding to join them until she had a clear idea when the mercenaries' debts would be paid.

Battle for Priestella

The White Dragon's Scales continued to serve Kiritaka for the following year. During the Battle for Priestella, Sirius Romanée-Conti invaded the Muse Company to retrieve Kirtaka, and he abided by her request, entrusting Anastasia Hoshin with the defense of the city while he and the mercenaries stayed behind. Kiritaka was abducted by Sirius, but she did not harm the mercenaries who had been with him. Several of the White Dragon's Scales members also gave Otto the chance to escape when he initially came across Gluttony. Later, while searching for Kiritaka, five of the White Dragon's Scales members encountered and engaged in combat with Lye Batenkaitos alongside Otto, Gaston, Felt, and Beatrice. Four of them were eaten, with the fifth one, Dynas, escaping with substantial injuries.
