Od Lagna

Od Lagna (オド・ラグナ, Odo Raguna) is a reserve of mana that is considered to be the heart of the world.

Information

Any kind of concrete knowledge regarding Od Lagna is generally minimal for most people in the world, including among accomplished magic users. Its exact location is unknown. If the world itself were to be considered a living creature, Od Lagna would be the Od of the world. Throughout history, various genius mages who utilized forbidden magic somehow saw Od Lagna, a mass of mana unlike anything they had seen before and eventually lost their minds. Some speculate that it is a consciousness that rules over everything in the world; others believe it is responsible for bestowing Divine Protections to people.

According to the author, Od Lagna is not a lifeform with a will, so it is not hostile to anyone, much like the sun.[1] It is considered as the heart of the world, where all mana eventually returns to.[2] To some extent, it can bestow Divine Protections. For example, it can create Divine Protections and give them to Reinhard van Astrea when he feels they are needed, but he may not receive a proper one if there is an error in conveying his intention.[3] Furthermore, Od Lagna also gives life to spirits and births them as lesser spirits.[4]

Rui Arneb concludes that Od Lagna has no ideology and is merely a mechanism responsible for keeping the world from breaking.[5] It is impartial, does not favor anything, and cannot understand people's hearts.[6][7] In addition, it is the antithesis of Witch Factors.[8] Despite this, it is also said that those who bear Witch Factors are those recognized by Od Lagna to have the right to rewrite the world. It is unknown why this is, especially when Divine Protections were supposedly made by Od Lagna to combat such people.

Od Lagna bears the authority to erase forbidden arts completely, and it has done so in the past to numerous spells. Such spells or curse arts are erased due to being capable of destroying the world's equilibrium. However, it does not unilaterally destroy all forbidden arts. Spells such as Al Quintet, used by Roswaal L. Mathers, and can potentially only be used by people such as Echidna and Myonmyon, has not been erased for the sole reason that it is something that cannot be wielded en masse.[9]

Corridor of Memories

The Corridor of Memories (記憶の回廊, Kioku no Kairō) is the cradle of Od Lagna. It is, according to Rui Arneb, a white expanse that is the resting place of the souls of the dead and where they go to commence the process of being filtered.[10][11] When a soul is filtered, the memories attached to it are cleared off like dirt, allowing for its reuse once it becomes clean.[12] The memories of the soul are then sent to the library at the Pleiades Watchtower, where they are used to create a Book of the Dead, which contains the history of the soul's life.

Rui Arneb resided within the Corridor of Memories from her birth, up until the events of Arc 6. She was familiar with the place, having gained her knowledge about it from the memories she accumulated through her Authority. Rui claimed that happenings within the Corridor of Memories could not leak to the outside easily, not even being able to reach Satella.[13] Moreover, she had some degree of limited control over it, being able to beckon it to remove someone from there. Rui could not completely control it, however, as she only had the capability to interfere in its processes by using the Authority of Gluttony. According to a hypothesis made by Natsuki Subaru, Flugel may be the Corridor of Memories' ruler.[14]

Registry of Souls

At the time of one's birth, when one undergoes the ritual of being named after being born, the name that they are given is recorded under the registry held within Od Lagna.[15] As such, once a name has been inscribed in Od Lagna's registry, no matter what they may choose to refer to themself as, their true name will not be altered.[16] However, there are exceptions to this rule, in which a person's true name can be changed. One of the commonly used methods to change one's true name is by marriage,[17] while another commonly used method is adoption.[18] In both cases, the true name is changed by the parties involved officially joining the family of another person, officially giving them or changing their surnames. At present, it is currently unknown whether there are other methods of changing one's true name.

Trivia

  • If it were necessary, Reinhard could defeat Od Lagna if he fought it.[1]
  • It has been stated that the world itself will not allow Reinhard to die.[19] It is not known if Od Lagna has specifically chosen to keep him alive, or if an external force is responsible.
  • There are some Authorities that are capable of interfering with or bypassing Od Lagna and its sight.
    • The Authority of Wrath held by the Witch of Wrath, Minerva, directly linked her to Od Lagna. It could forcibly convert her destructive energy into healing power, but because it twisted the rules of Od Lagna, this came at the cost of creating natural disasters that wreaked havoc in other parts of the world.[20]
    • In order for Clind and Petra Leyte to use their Compression, they must first pay compensation towards Od Lagna so that they can bypass its sight.
    • The Authority of Gluttony held by the Sin Archbishops functions by learning of the true name that is recorded in Od Lagna's registry and plucking them for themselves, placing their memories and/or names into their Stomach of Souls. However, changing one's true name can bypass this Authority's prerequisite necessities.
  • It is possible via a forbidden art produced by Sphinx to sever an area of the world from the view of Od Lagna by creating a blind spot around it. Doing so has the side effect of nullifying the effects of natural characteristics of the world such as Divine Protections and covenants within this blind spot.
  • Apparently, a "knowledge-hungry Witch" managed to "trick" Od Lagna into creating the Taygeta Library and Books of the Dead. How she managed to do this is currently unknown.
  • Despite dying at birth, instead of having her soul filtered by Od Lagna, Rui was instead trapped and conscious within the Corridor of Memories. The reason for this is unknown.
  • Certain curses can prevent a soul from returning to or being cleansed by Od Lagna.
    • An oath bound curse mark can burn a soul and prevent it from ever returning to Od Lagna.
    • The Soul Marriage Curse can cause a soul to continuously reincarnate without ever getting their soul cleansed by Od Lagna, and as such, those bearing this curse retain their memories from each previous life.
  • If a soul is unable return to Od Lagna, bears grudges, and combines with evil spirits, it becomes a hollow (ホロゥ).
  • Certain items can prevent a soul from returning to Od Lagna.
    • The Yang Sword Vollachia is capable of burning a person down to their very soul, effectively destroying it.
    • The Life Sword Zeam's primary ability is to destroy a person's soul.
  • The Leaper technique, utilized by Dorkell, was something he acquired after managing to connect to Od Lagna through unknown means.

  20. Minerva’s Authority let her forcefully convert the destructive energy she could hold into healing power. Her punches and kicks were some of the gentlest in the whole world, but they did not come cheap. Her forceful conversion of power forcibly linked straight into Od Lagna, the root of this world, twisting its rules, causing it to execute this. And because of that, the world was forced to pay its due compensation for having twisted its general notions, in the shape of a natural disaster somewhere completely unrelated.
