Born to a commoner family, Grimm is a knight of great experience, having fought alongside Wilhelm van Astrea in his youth during the Demi-Human War. Appearance
In the past, Grimm Fauzen wore the standard outfit and armor of the Royal Army and wielded a shield. He was a man with short, messy purple hair, and dark yellow brown eyes. Having suffered burns in his youth during the war, he has burn scars on his hands and wrists.
In the present, Grimm is an old man and is shown to have a scar on his throat due to an injury he got during the Demi-Human War. He has short white hair, a strong jawline, a white beard, and sharp eyes. He appeared wearing a pretty and chic butler outfit, similar to that of Wilhelm van Astrea. It is mentioned that he aged better than his beloved Carol Remendis.
Personality
Grimm is a strong-willed man, shown to be extremely stalwart and loyal to the Kingdom's Army. He placed great faith in others to act as the sword, whilst he acted as their shield. Despite that, he was quite a jocund person, who was easy to get along even on the brink of disaster. When adversity affected his loved one, Grimm was shown to be less easy-going, and in continuous blame of himself for the situation that had occurred. As he grew older, Grimm Fauzen became more serious, and after marrying Carol Remendis, he swore absolute loyalty to the Astrea family.
In his younger days, Grimm, having grown up in a small town, was somewhat idealistic and sought excitement that his small town could not offer, and as such, he became independent as he became of age. He also sought glory and to become a hero, which, in place of patriotism, is what initially inspired him to join the Royal Army when they were recruiting during the Demi-Human War. However, following his survival during his first battle and his multiple near-death experiences, Grimm became realistic and shed himself of those dreams, knowing that neither dreams nor facing reality were not what fills a person's stomach. Despite his attitude, he decided to keep with the army, filled with the trauma of the deaths and cries of his allies. This being said, thanks to his interactions with Wilhelm, which at first were rocky, he was able to overcome his trauma and push forward.
Due to a throat wound inflicted on him during the Demi-Human War, Grimm temporarily lost the ability to speak. Later, he began communicating more from his expressions and through paper, though he can still talk in brief intervals.
History
Sword Demon Love Song
Grimm was born in a small village called Fleur, situated north-east of the Royal Capital. When he was fifteen, Grimm moved out of Fleur out of boredom and into the Royal Capital to become independent, and for the next few years, he worked at several shops and taverns, performing menial work. One day, the Royal Army sought new recruits to join the army in an effort to fight in the Demi-Human War. Wishing to become a hero and attain glory, Grimm joined the army, where he met Tholter Weasily and was trained alongside him and the other knights by the commander, Razak Gildark. Six months after he joined, Grimm participated in his first battle, the Battle for Redonas Plateau, where a noble had also sought to make a name for himself. However, soon after the battle began, he, alongside many others in Grimm's unit, were all quickly killed. Having barely survived by being just outside the blast and being blown away, Grimm ran away, and he encountered a violet-skinned demi-human. As he was facing death, however, he was saved by the arrival of Wilhelm Trias, who easily beheaded him. Grimm, wanting to survive, followed after him, and he bore witness to the mountain of corpses that Wilhelm had created. Shortly after, the army signaled their victory, due in no small part to Wilhelm's efforts. His experience here greatly changed his beliefs, and instead of resigning in fear or clinging to his dreams, he remained in the army to keep himself fed, and soon after, Wilhelm was adopted into his squad.
After sharing drinks with his comrades and returning to the barracks early, he found Wilhelm training behind the barracks. After a short conversation with Wilhelm, who claimed that he didn't understand how the others couldn't devote themselves to their training instead of pleasures and calling Grimm a coward for making excuses, Grimm left to sleep, and in the following days, he continued to mask his trauma. Shortly after this, the Royal Army was baited into Castour Field, where they found themselves handily dealing with the demi-humans that they had struggled with prior. While Wilhelm was cutting down his enemies and bringing awe to friend and foe alike, both he and Grimm, who was protecting Tholter with his shield as he fired his arrows, had a bad feeling. It wasn't long after that their premonitions came true and the earth shook through magic, causing chaos among the army. Realizing the plot, Wilhelm moved forward to fight his enemies while the others retreated, much to his chagrin. Grimm, having dropped his sword, chased after him to bring him back, and along the way, he damaged a magic circle. After speaking with Wilhelm, who appeared and dispatched an attacking demi-human, he was told what the idea, crafted by Valga Cromwell, was meant for and that retreating was part of the trap. Despite Grimm's misgivings, Wilhelm continued to fight, and Grimm chased after him. Witnessing his carnal display against his enemies, Grimm called him the Sword Demon. Soon after, a massive cry from his allies could be heard as they fell for the trap, and Grimm was left sobbing for his decision. That day, the Battle of Castour Field ended in the army's defeat.
After being taken back by the rest of the army and given treatment, Grimm and Wilhelm joined the Zergev Squadron, with Grimm becoming akin to Pivot Arnancy's shadow. With the great defeat at Castour Field, the Kingdom decided to call in the magic specialist Roswaal J. Mathers to analyze the magic circles used. On the way there, Grimm and Wilhelm argued about when the latter called him a coward for his trauma, and before long, alongside the rest of the squadron, they arrived at Castour Field, where they officially met Roswaal and her bodyguard Carol. After once again getting into an argument with him, he, Wilhelm, and a few other members of the squadron moved on as a group to the magic circle. Along the way, he kept Carol company so that there would be any problems with Wilhelm. After arriving and allowing Roswaal to check the circle, after she claimed it would be a threat to the Kingdom, Grimm had a bad feeling that he thought Wilhelm might share. That feeling turned out to be correct when the undead Tholter fired arrows at them and corpse soldiers began rising. Covering Roswaal alongside Carol, Wilhelm went to fight the undead, where he met Sphinx. With Roswaal intending to join the fight, furious, Sphinx decided to retreat, leaving everyone to clean up the undead. With some help from Roswaal, Wilhelm realized that Tholter was the main corpse soldier to defeat, and after giving him the push he needed to overcome his trauma and fight, Grimm ran forward and put his old friend to rest. Though still fearful, after a conversation with Carol shortly after the fight, he fell in love with her. Afterward, meeting up with the commander Bordeaux Zergev and Pivot, Roswaal relayed Sphinx's identity and the threat she bore. Later, he, Wilhelm, Roswaal, Bordeaux, and Pivot all reported to the Kingdom's officials, including Miklotov McMahon, about the threat.
For the next three years, Grimm and the rest of the Zergev Squadron, as well as Roswaal and Carol at times, fought in some of the most dangerous battlefields of the war, where they both lost and obtained new members of the squadron. At one point, Grimm alleviated her fears in regards to both Wilhelm and her master, and afterward, she offered to train him with his shield. Over time, the two would regularly meet so that Carol could train him, and his relationship with Carol also grew. One day, the squad was set to go to Aihiya Swamp, where Valga, Libre Fermi, and possibly Sphinx were. Speaking with Wilhelm, they compared this to Castour Field, with Roswaal confirming his suspicions that their superiors took this into consideration. Carol appeared soon after, and as she spoke with Grimm, she gave Grimm a locket as a good luck charm. Soon after, they met their new commander, Leip Barielle, who struck Wilhelm for being disrespectful. Roswaal managed to pacify the man, and they walked away alongside Carol. With Wilhelm abating any concern for him, conversation soon turned to the locket Grimm received, in which was a flower that was given to Carol by her master. Not noticing Wilhelm's surprise, the squad soon moved to Aihiya Swamp.
During the Battle of Aihiya Swamp, Grimm fought alongside the rest of the Zergev Squadron as the fighting progressed, soon deciding to move toward the center of the fighting to remove the root of the war itself. There, they came across Libre, who challenged Wilhelm to a duel. Although putting up a good fight, Libre was able to corner Wilhelm and push him back, and in response, Grimm, Bordeaux, and Pivot surrounded Libre to cut him off. However, they were all put under the effects of a wide spanning magic circle, left at the mercy of the demi-humans. With Libre pointing his blade at Bordeaux, Wilhelm attempted to fight him off, only for Libre to nearly kill him. Pivot, instead, jumped in the way of his blade, and as he lay on the ground, he yelled at everyone not to let Wilhelm die, rousing them to take arms against Libre. However, they were all nearly slaughtered, and Grimm, who was able to defend himself for longer than the others, sustained a wound to his throat. Before he could be finished off, Wilhelm pounced Libre and fell into away from the others. With Pivot dying in Bordeaux's arms, he soon revived as an undead and attempted to strangle Bordeaux. However, the barely conscious Grimm managed to push him away, allowing Bordeaux to put him to rest. After this, the army retreated, with Grimm managing to survive his terrible wound, unable to speak.
Within the month that followed, Grimm remained in the Royal Treatment Center. Though he met with Bordeaux once, he was unable to speak with him again since the man found himself busy. Carol visited him and apologized profusely for allowing this to happen, leading to their kiss and their becoming lovers. During one of her later visits, she gave Grimm a new shield as a present for surviving the battle. Later on, because of Carol's insistence, Wilhelm came to visit him, somewhat surprising Grimm. During their conversation, in which Grimm used writing to communicate, after he said that Bordeaux had clearly changed, much to his frustration, Wilhelm questioned why everyone gave their lives for him and why Grimm sacrificed his voice. Grimm responded to him by claiming that his ideals and sword were the squad's as well and that he represented hope. Despite being envious of his abilities and will to push forward where other can't, that was the reason he could not be allowed to die. Afterward, Grimm thanked him for his actions when Tholter had risen as an undead when Wilhelm gave him the push he needed.
After returning to duty, uprisings began across the country. With the rebuilt Zergev Squadron wondering where they should go, Wilhelm realized that their enemies were targeting the castle, and Grimm backed him up. Trusting his judgment, Bordeaux led everyone to the castle, and with assistance from Roswaal and Carol, they were allowed into the castle. Shortly after arriving inside, Bordeaux left for the audience chamber while Wilhelm's group left for the chapel. After meeting with Valga and Sphinx, Wilhelm decided to handle Valga while the others chased after Sphinx. The group managed to corner her with Roswaal's techniques and Carol's midair combat, and Grimm even managed to deflect one of her strongest attacks thanks to the shield. After the appearance of Bordeaux and Libre thanks to this, Libre cut off Sphinx's other arm before fading away, and Sphinx ran away, followed by Roswaal. The others went to help Wilhelm, who eventually managed to defeat Valga.
In the following year, Wilhelm became much friendlier with everyone, and he would also start sharing drinks with Grimm, even teasing him about his relationship with Carol, while Grimm found it amazing about his changes. However, after Wilhelm left to go save his lands in the Battle of the Trias Domain, Grimm, Theresia, and the rest of the Zergev Squadron made their way to save him. After this, Wilhelm would not be seen with the army until after the Demi-Human War was over. In this time, Grimm received a home of his own, where Carol would often visit. During the ceremony to award the Sword Saint, Grimm attended and bore witness to the battle between Wilhelm and Theresia, and after witnessing his victory and his kissing Theresia, he and the other members of the Zergev Squadron reunited with him.
Sword Demon Love Story
After Theresia dragged Wilhelm to her mansion and forced him to take a bath, he spoke with Carol and Grimm, the former of which lashed out at him, and he learned of her position as Theresia's attendant. After this, they informed him that he was unemployed, leading him to finding a way to rejoin. Later, upon Carol and Grimm's return to the mansion, Carol chided Wilhelm for upsetting Theresia and went to speak with her while Wilhelm and Grimm finished all of the food that Theresia prepared. The next day over breakfast, Carol warned him not to do anything that would upset Theresia. The day after that, Wilhelm found himself face to face with the best warriors the country had to offer, including Bordeaux, Carol, and Grimm. With Gionis and Miklotov overseeing the battle, Wilhelm fought and defeated all forty soldiers. However, after Theresia arrived and chided the king for allowing this, it was revealed that she would have been let go of her position if she married Wilhelm, much to everyone's but the king and Miklotov's shock. Wilhelm accepted this, and they embraced, Theresia calling him Wilhelm van Astrea.
Three months later, Veltol Astrea used his authority to move the Zergev Squadron to patrol the towns around the capital, despite there being only three days before Wilhelm and Theresia's wedding. After Wilhelm joined up with Grimm and the rest of the squadron, who all wanted to wrap up the patrols as quickly as possible to let Wilhelm make it in time for his wedding, Bordeaux and Theresia, who had made him food for the journey, saw them off. Though they intended to pass quickly through the towns on Fleur, Millgray, Bonobo, and Cramlin, they faced a setback in Fleur due to Grimm's homecoming for the first time since he joined the army. Despite this, they managed to pass quickly through Millgray and Bonobo, but on the day before Wilhelm's wedding, the squad was tasked with finding the missing children in Cramlin. Though they found them inside the Nest of the Earth Serpent, a cave network beneath Mount Cordor, Wilhelm, Grimm, and the last child were all caved in. Trying to find their way out, the kid, who had passed out, eventually awoke and provided the two with a lagmite crystal, providing them light. However, shortly after, they were set upon by the Earth Serpent, a large earth sandworm. Being forced to confront it, Grimm, who was only able to block one of its strikes, was tasked with taking the kid and running while Wilhelm held it off. Grimm eventually found a hole for the kid to pass through and had him inform the rest of the squad of his location. Afterward, he signaled Wilhelm to rush back to him, where a trap was waiting and triggered when the giant worm punched a hole into the outside world, where the rest of the squadron was waiting, and they successfully killed it. With it being the morning of the day of the wedding, everyone quickly rushed to return back to the capital, Conwood Melahau and the others feeling guilty for failing to recognize her as a regular girl during their time with her and saying that Theresia should not be on the altar alone, deciding to postpone their after-action report. Though unable to clean themselves or change, they managed to return in time, and afterward, he attended his wedding. With Veltol entrusting her to him, Wilhelm and Theresia were finally married. As the two prepared to leave, Theresia tossed the bouquet to Carol, leaving her flustered. Grimm took this chance to pull her in, take the bouquet, and hold it in the air, showcasing that he and Carol would be next.
Abilities
Powerful Instincts: Aside from his skill with the shield, one of Grimm's most notable traits is his ability to sense danger. According to Grimm, he gets a feeling of fear on the nape of his neck when danger is near. His instincts are the main reason that he has managed to defend himself and survive hopeless situations, such as the Battle of Castour Field. In fact, his ability to sense danger is superior to Wilhelm's, getting bad feelings when Wilhelm initially couldn't until the danger was already at his feet, and this had led to Wilhelm trusting this feeling as something that signifies true danger.
Equipment:
- Great Shield: Grimm's primary weapon of choice is a large shield with the Remendis sigil engraved on it. The shield was given to him by Carol Remendis during the Demi-Human War. He displayed great skill with it, even being capable of deflecting attacks from Wilhelm, an Al Jiwald fired by Sphinx, and even an attack from an Earth Sandworm. His skill with the shield allows him to evenly match the skills of Carol while being manipulated without hurting her.
- Sword: Although he wasn't very effective with it and was considered hopeless with it, Grimm wielded a standard sword in his first few battles.
Trivia
- In the Comic Alive release of Sword Demon Battle Ballad: Act 4, Grimm was said to have been "gifted with a divine protection that allowed him to sense danger". Despite this, Grimm does not actually have a Divine Protection, and any reference to this line was removed in the Ex 6 release.
