Beatrice

Beatrice (ベアトリス) is a member of the Emilia Camp and the former caretaker of the Forbidden Library at the old Roswaal Manor, until its destruction in the climax of Arc 4. She is one of the main supporting characters in Re:Zero, having had a supporting role to play in every arc except Arc 1 and Arc 3.

She is an artificial spirit created by the Witch of Greed for unknown reasons. 400 years ago, she was told to wait in the library for "That Person" who would grant her salvation. However, in Arc 4's climax, Subaru convinced her to live, and she became his contracted spirit.

Appearance

On the outside, Beatrice seems like a lovely young girl around the age of eleven or twelve. Her face is so sweet that Subaru believed there was no heart that wouldn't melt at the sight of a genuine smile of hers. Her large sky-blue eyes have pink butterfly patterns as their irises.[1] Beatrice's pale cream blonde hair is worn long and tied into frilly vertical drill-shaped twin tails that act like springs when pulled on. In the anime adaptation, the tips of her twin tails are dyed pink.

Most of the time, the Great Spirit of the Forbidden Library can be seen wearing a pink frilly ornate dress with white trimmings and an exposed front that leave her legs visible and are completely covered by pink and purple vertically striped tights. A petite crown is also sported on the right side of Beatrice's large head, serving as a nice accessory which complements her appearance rather perfectly. Beatrice also wears pink shoes with butterfly straps on her feet, and has a large pink ribbon adorned upon the left side of her waist and a pair of similar ribbons tied at the top of her twin tails.

In the Water Plumage Inn in Arc 5, she wears a yukata.

Personality

Beatrice has a tendency to look down on those around her, to the point that she would come off as a haughty person to people she meets. As such, this makes her rather bad at dealing with people who try to get close to her, like when she first met both Ryuzu Meyer and Subaru. She is also prideful of her vast knowledge of yin magic, disliking when someone disrespects it, and she also displays pride at being Echidna's daughter, though this would at times lead her into spats with others Echidna had taken a liking to. She has also shown a mischievous side of herself; when she messed around with Ryuzu, she cast a yin magic looping spell to pull a prank on her, and she did the same to Subaru when she found herself somewhat annoyed by the commotion his presence initially caused for her. That said, when a prank is done back to her or someone sees through it, she becomes annoyed quite quickly. She has also shown tsundere tendencies, acting haughty around people she was close to yet disliking showing her sensitive or weaker side of herself, which has come to light with both Roswaal and Ryuzu. That said, she is softhearted beyond her perceived stubbornness. She also has a distinct way of speaking, adding "I suppose" (かしら, kashira) and "in fact" (なのよ, na no yo) at the end of most of her sentences.

Despite being full of bravado, following the attack on the Sanctuary by Hector, when Ryuzu, who was her closest friend and even promised to teach to read, gave her life to defend everyone, she has become a rather lonely person, and though she was willing to wait in the Forbidden Library for centuries after her mother entrusted it to her until the arrival of "That Person", she refused to come out and even shut herself off from each successive generation of House Mathers, and even Toska, who had once tried and failed to bring her out of the library. With numerous people having stumbled upon the Forbidden Library, not there specifically for her but her knowledge and the knowledge the library contained, her belief for the arrival of "That Person" started to wane, to the point that she contemplated if she should continue to exist. She still showed great affection towards Puck, who she found cute and trusted implicitly, but in the time that the two were separated, when she realized that he had changed after meeting Emilia, this made her sense of loneliness stronger.

However, after meeting Subaru for the first time, though she maintained her stubborn and distant attitude, she started showing a slightly more social side of herself, sometimes putting up with the shenanigans caused by Subaru and Emilia, feeling the need to help Rem when she started visiting the library regularly, eating with other members of the Roswaal Manor, and at one point, even attempted to better her singing by placing a bucket over her head to hear her voice better, something that she had seen Emilia doing at one point. Even when others had finally left the mansion and she believed she would have some peace and quiet, with some time having passed without the lively atmosphere of the residents, she started wishing for them to hurry and return. In some of Subaru's loops in particular, she even started showing signs of attachment towards Subaru himself, going out of her way to protect him through loopholes in a contract that she made with him at one point, saving his life when she was on the verge of dying herself despite having no reason to do so, and in one of the trials taken by Subaru, she was even shown crying upon seeing his death, despite not having known him for long and in that specific loop, barely interacting whatsoever. She had believed that Subaru might even be "That Person".

During the events of Arc 4, she was finally forced to confront her loneliness when Subaru attempted to bring her out of the manor. Despite wanting Subaru to be "That Person", his declining the notion every time caused her to kick him out of the library, and she was resigned to let herself die as the mansion burned down, her last act being to prevent Subaru himself from dying. However, when Subaru showed his efforts and refused to let her be alone, wanting to leave an impression on her so strong that she would remember him, even long after he died, though he wasn't "That Person", he convinced her to choose him as her person, and she followed him out of the Forbidden Library, forming an official contract with him and fighting alongside him.

Following the creation of her contract, Beatrice has shed her loneliness entirely, showing a significantly more cheerful attitude than before. She has shown great pride at being Subaru's contracted spirit, and she would often accompany him and take part in many of his moments of playfulness, trust in his decisions involving heavy topics like accepting Spica in spite of her past, or even become enraged on his behalf when someone mocked the memories of someone dear to him, not even wanting him to meet with said person in the belief that he would be irreparably harmed. She would at times sleep in his bed like a little sister, hold his hand often, and at one point, she almost followed him into the bathroom due to a sense of not wanting to be apart from him. She also has become significantly more social with the other members of the Emilia Camp. Though she remains filled with her own pride and still is shown respect, she has shown to exhibit a sisterly attitude with Emilia, has become friendly with Petra Leyte, and will regularly tease Otto Suwen in much the same way that Subaru does. This side of her has also led to her providing knowledge to others over topics that she was aware of or chiding Roswaal for his actions, both involving his past bodies and his attitude toward Subaru obtaining more Witch Factors.

History

Beatrice is an artificial spirit created by the Witch of Greed, Echidna, over 400 years ago. In the years following her creation, Echidna tasked Beatrice to safekeep her mansion, known as the Palace of the Witch. Throughout the Witch's frequent absences, Beatrice acted in her place, helping out whoever managed to reach the unreachable Palace, together with Puck. Roughly three years after her creation, she and Puck helped Toska in fending off the Silver Dragons led by Fargall.

Some years later, Beatrice started frequently accompanying Echidna to the Sanctuary, where she met the original Ryuzu Meyer and became friends with her. However, disaster struck when the Warlock of Melancholy, Hector, attacked the Sanctuary, as he was hunting down Echidna. To protect everyone in the Sanctuary, Ryuzu offered to use herself to speed up the process of putting up the Barrier around Sanctuary, Echidna's only plan of stopping Hector. Following the creation of the Barrier and the Sanctuary's survival, Echidna told Beatrice to use her Door Crossing to connect her library to Roswaal's mansion, as she wanted the knowledge she had collected to survive. Echidna told Beatrice to protect the library until "That Person" showed up to bring her out of the library.

Throughout the centuries, many people tried to take her out of the library, but they were all interested in the knowledge in the Forbidden Library or using Beatrice, as she is a very powerful great spirit. Beatrice began to close her heart, doubting that "That Person" would ever show up. A couple of months before Subaru's arrival, Emilia was brought to the mansion, and with her, Puck. Though Beatrice was rejoicing at first, she soon realized Puck has changed, as he spent every waking minute hovering around Emilia and not paying much attention to Beatrice, despite their nearly identical upbringings all those centuries ago. Not long after, however, a strange boy by the name of Natsuki Subaru, had also arrived at the mansion.

Abilities

Artificial Spirit: Beatrice is currently contracted with Subaru, though according to her, he isn't a true spirit user. She also has a terrible mana consumption rate and formerly got around this by draining mana from people in the mansion while using the library as a medium. As Subaru's contracted spirit, Beatrice is able to sense his condition and whereabouts via her connection with him, although Subaru is unable to do so. Furthermore, Beatrice can be remotely called out by Subaru if he focuses enough on his link with her. As she is an artificial spirit, she also has several conditions Subaru is forced to follow:

  • Subaru cannot form a contract with other spirits.
  • Beatrice cannot restore mana on her own.
  • Beatrice cannot use the mana in the atmosphere.
  • Beatrice can only drain mana from Subaru.

Magic (魔法, Mahō): Beatrice is a master of Yin Magic and is capable of casting all kinds of Yin Magic spells, even those that have been long since forgotten by people in the present. She is capable of doing various things through it such as teleportation, freezing time, tearing space, and fixating her existence. At the prime of her power, Beatrice's magic was capable of fighting the Beast of the End. Her battle strength allowed her to easily overpower the Bowel Hunter Elsa Granhiert, a woman with exceptional lethality in her own right. However, after her and Subaru's debut battle with the Great Rabbit, Beatrice used up all the mana she had accumulated in her four centuries of residing in Roswaal Manor, making it impossible for her to use any spells aside from the most basic ones, rendering her borderline useless in combat for a time. She is also remarkably skilled at Water and Wind magic.

Beatrice using Shamac

Beatrice using Shamak to obscure the vision of Elsa and provide a covered retreat.

  • Shamak (シャマク): One of the most basic Yin Magic spells, which even Subaru could use until the collapse of his gate, was Shamak. When cast, a blanket of black smoke would erupt from the user that would cover a significantly large area. Any target engulfed by the smoke would completely lose their spatial awareness. Under the spell's effect, the only thing the target could sense was the ground under their feet and any damage done to their body. Although it was a low-level spell, it proved an effective smokescreen when retreating. Naturally, due to her mastery of Yin Magic, Beatrice is capable of conjuring Shamak.
    • El Shamak (エル・シャマク): Beatrice's target becomes unable to control their bodies while under its effects.
    • Ul Shamak (ウル・シャマク): Beatrice creates an immense black hole that swallows her target.
    • Al Shamak (アル・シャマク): Al Shamak is capable of bending space and time. It is capable of sending its target to a different location in the world or, in some cases, even to a different dimension. If Beatrice deems it necessary, she can also release what was captured with the spell.
  • Door Crossing (扉渡り, Tobirawatari): Door Crossing connects its space to the interior of a single building, otherwise to the place Beatrice most recently knew. It can't connect over especially long ranges, however even if it's long range, if she has deep ties to a place, Door Crossing can connect to it. She can also use a limited version to teleport things.
    • Infinite Corridor (無限の回廊, Mugen no Kairō): Beatrice can utilize her mastery of Yin Magic to manipulate the fabric of space. She can create a loop in space that ensured an individual walking through a structure would move in a loop, meaning that, if they were walking down a corridor, it would seem endless. The target of this spell can break out of the loop by finding the correct door and/or pathway to walk through. Beatrice used this ability to annoy Subaru on his first entry into the mansion in Arc 2.
  • Barrier Conjuration: Using magic, Beatrice can conjure a wall of invisible magical energy. The wall will deflect any magical attack that fell upon it, keeping the caster and their allies safe from physical damage. Beatrice was first seen in Arc 2 generating a magical shield to defend against Ram's Wind Magic.
  • Minya (ミーニャ): Beatrice's magic that creates stakes made of crystallized mana covered with light purple flames. They are strong enough to penetrate defenses. Any stakes in the air explode and release smaller stakes that fly in all directions which then rips its targets apart.
    • El Minya (エル・ミーニャ): The number of stakes fired increases to 40.
    • Ul Minya (ウル・ミーニャ): Beatrice creates a purple ring of light around the target that shrinks and binds them, subsequently spreading across their body. Once the target is bound, a huge purple-blue light appears above them to destroy them. The effect is currently unknown as Beatrice's attempt was stopped partway through.
  • Murak (ムラク):
    Beatrice - Murak

    Beatrice using Murak on Subaru.

Beatrice reduces the effects of gravity. Just by jumping lightly, a person can jump as if they had springs. If Beatrice wished it, it can also be used to fly, although the target will get blown around by the wind like a leaf. That said, the target won't flip around in midair. It can also be used to upset an enemy’s balance and footing, which would grant an opening that would otherwise be unavailable.
  • Vita (ヴィータ): Contrary to Murak, Beatrice uses this spell to amplify the effects of gravity, making an object heavier.
    • El Vita (エル・ヴィータ): This spell not only amplifies gravity on a specified target, but it also adds mass to it, making it significantly heavier.
  • EMM (E・M・M; エミリアたんマジ女神, Emiria-tan Maji Megami; "Emilia-tan is Seriously a Goddess"): EMM is an "absolute defense magic". Beatrice uses Yin Magic to interfere with the time and space around Subaru, and while he can't move during activation, he experiences no interference from outside the barrier. It is similar to Regulus Corneas's Lion's Heart, but does not have the same risk, and it renders Subaru and Beatrice unable to move until the spell is cut off or their mana runs out.
  • EMT (E・M・T; エミリアたんマジ天使, Emiria-tan Maji Tenshi; "Emilia-tan is Seriously an Angel"): EMT is an "absolute negation magic". It is a spherical field several ten meters long with Subaru and Beatrice at the center is created, which negates effects from mana within it. Julius remarks that it is useful against mages and those who use mana to assist their techniques. However, the magic only negates the use of mana, and so it has no effect against opponents who fight without it. Similarly, while it is effective against powerful barriers as well, such as the one around the Pleiades Watchtower, it does not necessarily fully cancel them out. Said barrier still existed after the spell was forcefully cancelled.
  • Healing Magic (治癒魔法, Chiyu Mahō): Beatrice summons water mana to heal the wounds of herself and others, however it only affects physical ones. Power varies by the skill and talent of the individual or partially that of the spirit if the caster is using spiritual arts. Beatrice is highly skilled in this to the point she can regenerate lost organs.

Decurseification: Beatrice, just like Puck, can sense when an individual has been infected by a curse. She can tell where on a person's body a curse has been placed and can subsequently remove it. However, Beatrice can only remove a curse if the caster has yet to activate the curse they had placed on a person. Likewise, if there are too many curses on one’s body, she cannot remove them, as they are all wound together like an intricately tied knot. Furthermore, she can't tell the effects the curse would inflict on an individual without observing the curse in effect.[2]

Beatrice - Mana Drain

Beatrice using Mana Drain against Subaru.

Mana Drain: Unlike most spirits, Beatrice does not absorb Mana from the atmosphere. Instead, Beatrice obtains her Mana from living creatures. By touching an individual, Beatrice can absorb the mana stored in their gate, bolstering her own supply of Mana in the process. The individual affected by the technique would become physically fatigued if enough of their Mana was drained. By absorbing a person's mana, Beatrice could also tell to an certain extent whether the target had hostile intentions towards her or not. She is the only one besides Puck that knows this skill,[3] though Reinhard has shown a similar ability at the end of Arc 1.

Vast Intellect: Being over 400 years old, Beatrice has vast amounts of knowledge on a variety of subjects and is always reading books in her library. On top of that, she was also taught by Echidna about magic. Beatrice is also really excellent with magical power theories and using them. In particular, her knowledge on Yin Magic far surpasses Roswaal's own. Likewise, she is able to instantly recognize the intricacies of magic that others are unaware of, such as the "clump of Yin Magic" that kidnapped Subaru. In a similar manner, she is also able to recognize various meteors that were created by Echidna and how to use them, such as the Star Staff.

Unknown Ability: Beatrice has the ability to smell the scent of the Witch. It is unknown why she has this ability.

Equipment:

  • Book of Wisdom (叡智の書, Eichi no Sho):
    Beatrice's Gospel ep.32

    Beatrice's Book of Wisdom.

400 years ago, Echidna gave Beatrice one of the two imperfect replicas of her Book of Wisdom. The Book's design was similar but wider, taller and thicker than the defective Witch Cult's Gospel although this one was far more specific, when it came to guiding the owner towards their desired path, resembling Echidna's very own, perfect Book of Wisdom more than the aforementioned Witch Cult's Gospels. Soon after Beatrice received the Book and locked herself into the Forbidden Library, her Book suddenly stopped showing new content, leaving Beatrice in the dark for centuries. Eventually, when Subaru saved Beatrice from the burning library, her Book of Wisdom was completely lost to the fire.
