Hector

Information

Hector (ヘクトール) was the Valiant[Note 1] and the Warlock of Melancholy. A supernumerary Warlock who, along with the Saintess, was considered separate from the rest of the Witches, he seemed to hold some sort of vendetta against Echidna.

As the reason for the Sanctuary's creation, roughly 400 years ago, he pursued Echidna to the Sanctuary, where he swiftly defeated the original Roswaal and engaged with the Witch of Greed, with the outcome of their fight being unclear. His current status and whereabouts are unknown.

Appearance

Hector had the look of a young man around twenty years of age with a tall body and slender frame. His long messy charred-brown colored hair was tied into a braid that trailed down to his butt. His brown eyes had heavy bags under them that gave off the impression of a sickly person. His mouth was slightly puckered, and his cheekbones were fairly pronounced. The color of his face was poor, and his posture was crooked, which, when coupled with his worn eyes, gave the impression of someone who found it demanding to put on clothes and leave the house. Indeed, every part of Hector's demeanor portrayed lethargy and a general lack of vitality. Rather paradoxically, despite the lack of joviality conveyed by his attitude and posture.

Contrary to his facial features however, Hector wore a rather colorful attire; that of a jester. Half of it was purple and half of it was white. The suit was extremely skinny, left his shoulders visible, and had a red and black tail on it. In the anime, he's surrounded by a purple distorted hue which somewhat resembles a force field.

Personality

As the Warlock of Melancholy, Hector has a negative personality, frequently expressing his negativity in words. His manner of speaking is similar to Roswaal, who started to speak like Hector after getting beaten. Hector is stronger than Echidna, but despite that, his existence was left unknown for future generations to know. It should be noted that his mind was corrupted by his Witch Factor, so this personality may be different to what it was prior to the corruption.

History

Roughly 400 years ago, Hector was known as the Valiant. Though it is unknown for what reason he bore this title, he willingly took in the Witch Factor of Melancholy, something which was tailor-made for his usage. He was once married, and his wife deemed it suitable to refer to him as a Warlock of Melancholy as a pet name, which stuck with him over time.[1] He also seemed to be acquainted with Clind. However, according to Clind, he and the Saintess were unable to avoid the mental corruption that came with the Witch Factor, and he became counted as a supernumerary Witch Factor holder.

Eventually, he pursued Echidna for unknown reasons, forcing her to flee to the Sanctuary located in the Kremaldy Forest. In order to prevent him from entering the Sanctuary, Echidna tried to create a magical barrier but failed, resulting in Hector successfully accessing the hiding place and facing off against Roswaal A. Mathers, swiftly defeating him without breaking a sweat. Just before delivering the finishing blow, Echidna intercepted him, saving Roswaal's life. The Witch and the Warlock clashed with the outcome of their fight being unknown, though it is safe to assume Echidna survived the ordeal whilst Hector's fate is currently unknown. At some point after this, his Witch Factor of Melancholy ended up with Clind. Likewise, it is assumed that Hector is dead.

Abilities

Authority of Melancholy (憂鬱の権能 Yū'utsu no Ken'nō): Hector wielded the Authority of Melancholy.

  • Crushing Force Field: Hector surrounds himself in an invisible force field that is able to crush both living things and magic alike. The more he closes his distance with the target, the stronger the damage is. As Hector himself seems to be the very center of this force field, the damage has the highest magnitude when in direct contact with him; by simply jabbing his finger into Roswaal's chest, he shattered his bones, completely crushed his chest and organs and twisted and crumbled his limbs, completely destroying the mage's body beyond repair.[2]
  • Long Range Force Field: Hector also seems to be able to create force fields outside his reach by looking at a place or pointing his open palm towards it, as seen when he destroyed a hut in which Ryuzu was hiding, several tens of meters away from where Hector was standing.[3]

Trivia

  • Like the Witches (with the exception of Satella), Hector's namesake matches both an asteroid and a mythological being. 624 Hektor is the name of the largest Jupiter trojan, an asteroid that shares the planet Jupiter's orbit around the Sun. The mythological Hector was a Trojan prince and hero in Greek mythology.
  • The author ranked Hector in the upper echelon in the story in terms of strength, though the full extent of his abilities remain unknown.[4]
  • Hector is the only known Warlock.[5]
  • The fact that the barrier of the Sanctuary was made to counter Hector implies that he may have been a demi-human of some sort, though no conclusions have been made so far.
  • According to the author, Hector will make another appearance in the story, though he did not divulge any specifics.
  • Long ago, Clind and Roswaal defeated an unnamed enemy of the latter's. Roswaal described this enemy as a “longstanding foe”.[6] In the present day, Clind is the inheritor of Hector's Witch Factor and Authority of Melancholy.

Note

  1. While Hector has not been explicitly stated to be the Valiant, he is depicted in an illustration with Clind before the latter disclosed info concerning the Valiant and the Saintess, and the only person known to be called the Warlock of Melancholy and thus fits the criteria to be considered the Valiant is Hector.
