Ram

Ram (ラム) is Rem's older twin sister and one of the maids working for Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers. She played a supporting role in Arc 2, Arc 4, and Arc 6, as well as a lesser supporting role in Arc 3, Arc 7, and Arc 8.

Originally, Ram was born into the Oni Clan with a single horn and displayed exceptional talent and strength which resulted in the village referring to her as the reincarnation of the Oni God. However, after an attack orchestrated by the Witch Cult, she lost her horn and, together with her sister, was saved by Roswaal L. Mathers. In return, Ram swore to help Roswaal in his own endeavors, pledging to help him kill the Divine Dragon. During her ten years of serving under the Margrave, she developed strong feelings of love for him, despite initially vowing to kill him and avenge her slaughtered Clan.

Appearance

Ram has medium length light pink hair that covers her left eye, large darkish red eyes, and young features. She also has hair clips towards right side of her hair, flower-shaped ribbon on the same side of her hair, and a maid hairband. She looks nearly identical to her sister Rem, apart from her hair, eyes, and ribbon coloring. She usually wears a maid uniform. She has a smaller chest compared to her sister, and she has slanted eyes. At times, she also wears a white hooded robe for when she is traveling on her own.

In Arc 6, Ram wears a long-sleeved aqua-green dress with white frills at the hem of the long skirt, aqua-green boots, black leggings, and an aqua-green cloak with a white design on the hood to protect her from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes.

Personality

Ram is seemingly self-centered, sardonic, and does things at her own pace. However, in actuality, she maintains a distance from people to ascertain them. She is slightly more outgoing in comparison to the generally taciturn Rem, who generally allows Ram to take the lead in their sisterly bond. Her sardonic remarks are her way of teasing others. While she's cold and snarky outwardly, she is caring of others around her deep down, and she is surprisingly kind and forgiving towards others.

While Ram tends to come off as rather lazy in her work as a maid, often seen taking breaks and doing a shoddy job with whichever task she is given, in truth, her body, which is constantly experiencing pain from the severance of her horn, prevents her from doing too many physical tasks. Because of this, she does whatever work she physically can, which includes completing documents related to the affairs of the Mathers Domain whenever Roswaal in unable to, though she keeps this a secret from her sister. Also, when she was young, she often experienced impulses driving her to fight and kill, and those impulses only got stronger as she aged and got more powerful. She resisted them for a long time until the day that her horn was severed from her, which effectively ended those impulses. Despite the pain that comes with the loss of her horn and the restraint of most of her strength behind "shackles", however, she actually believed that it was a good thing, which she affirmed during her battle with Lye Batenkaitos, when she realized her impulse to kill would be far too hard to resist if they had remained.

Throughout her life, even as early as shortly after her birth, Ram was extremely protective of her sister, Rem. Because of her sheer genius and her position in the Oni Clan, she recognized Rem's inferiority complex and often did everything she could to include her in various small tasks like cooking, and she did everything she could to protect her. Even as her village was destroyed, her priority was saving her sister over the other members of the clan. Likewise, she even decided to serve Roswaal to protect her, as she was aware of Roswaal's knowledge of the attack on their village and his use of her sister as a hostage. Like her protectiveness of her sister, her hatred of Roswaal was something that dominated her mind throughout her life. However, this hatred eventually shifted to a complicated devotion to him, and after she lost memories of Rem, everything that complicated their relationship vanished, which transformed those feelings from devotion to love, and in her love, she would be willing to do everything she could to set the man on the right path, even if it means getting in the way of his dream or exposing herself to danger by his hands.

During times of emergency, Ram has a tendency to hide her worry and concern under her usual demeanor, consistently acting as though she was unbothered. Despite this, when information reaches her ears regarding those she is worried about, she has no issue pointing her wand at someone she is friendly with, claiming that if they were to get in her way that she would kill them regardless of who they are, such as when she was confronting Serena Dracroy when Rem and Subaru were in Vollachia. Likewise, in times of extreme stress, she will become very emotional and act in denial. When Subaru, whom she often relies on and places a considerable amount of trust in, and who was the only person who remembered her sister after her name and memories were devoured by Gluttony, lost his memories, she confronted him while not believing him, claiming that it was an act, and even when he told her that it was not an act, she was immensely shaken, yelled at him, and held him against the wall in frustration. In one failed loop, she even flew into a murderous rage when she believed he was an impostor.

History

The Oni Sisters of the Hidden Village

As the prodigious elder twin, Ram was born with extraordinary talent for mana manipulation and a powerful body to match that made her the pride of the Oni village, as, according to the chieftain of the village, she was the second coming of the Oni God. Her aptitude didn't just lie there, she excelled in everything - from cooking to physical activities - and was showered in adoration, even by her own sister. However, she never let any of it get to her head and never forgot her little sister, no matter how much attention was paid to her. During the night of the attack by the Witch Cult, when all the Oni fell, she alone kept fighting to avenge them and protect her sister. But the cult outnumbered her, and she made a last-ditch effort to shield a petrified Rem from being cut down. In mere moments, Ram lost her horn when it was sliced off from her head as a result of that. Had it not been for a passing mage at the time whom they came to know as Roswaal L. Mathers, they would not have survived the massacre.

The next several years since then, Roswaal would gain the twins' eternal gratitude and fervent loyalty. Roswaal would also ensure that Ram received regular mana infusions and served as her lifeline. During the early days of her life at Roswaal Manor, Ram would also come to know the partial truth of the cult's raid that night, as well as the identity of the cult member responsible for cutting off her horn, Faust, with assistance from Roswaal, and achieved her vengeance. Ram is the only person who knows about Roswaal's gospel and had formed a contract with him that stipulated that his life would be hers if the future ever deviated from its predictions as penance for knowing about the attack and letting it happen for his own ends.

Ram's Flirting Refusal

On the day of Subaru's summoning, Roswaal sent Ram with Emilia to the Royal Capital, and shortly after, they got separated from each other, leading to Ram searching for her. As she searched, she met a helmeted man, Al, who was searching for his own master, Priscilla Barielle. However, the discussion ended quickly, and Ram decided to leave, to which the man replied "Well, goodbye, Ram..." with a nostalgic voice. Though she questioned how he knew her name, the man was gone, and she continued her search for Emilia. Shortly after, she was confronted by the three thugs, Ton, Chin, and Kan, who she quickly dispatched. Leaving the area, she bore witness to bright lights coming from the direction of the slums, and with a good feeling, she headed that way. Arriving at her destination at the aftermath of the Loot House Incident, she found Emilia and a teenage boy in her arms. After this, they returned to Roswaal Manor to have the boy healed.

Abilities

Penaltie - greatly boost her combat

Ram's penalty for using her Oni power to greatly boost her combat abilities for a brief period of time.

Oni Bloodline (鬼の血族, Oni no Ketsuzoku): Ram was formerly considered to be a child prodigy and the second coming of the Oni God[1] even though she only had one horn. In her youth, she could feel a bloodthirsty impulse that as well. However, it was cut off by Faust when the Witch Cult attacked her village, thus causing her to lose access to most of her power while simultaneously ridding her of her impulses. Despite not having a horn, she can still go into her Oni Form, being able to use her powers to greatly boost her combat abilities for a short amount of time, but it comes at the cost of vomiting blood and rendering herself unable to move for a long period of time. It is stated that she manages this form in terms of "Shackles", with each shackle representing around 10% of her power as an Oni.[2] She is capable of utilizing more of her power with less backlash by connecting to Subaru through Cor Leonis or Rem through her own horn, but according to herself, using too much of her power while connected to the former could kill him, and when she connected to the latter, her mana flow was interrupted, leaving her unable to properly use her legs for a time. Because of the severance of her horn, she has to regularly have someone flow mana through the spot where her horn used to be. However, they must be particularly skilled with their control of mana, such as Roswaal or Julius Juukulius. By comparison, if someone like Emilia, who is skilled at magic but not as skilled as Roswaal overall, flowed mana into her, though Ram would receive the mana, she would feel significantly more drained and physically exhausted.

Ram - Clairvoyance

Ram using Clairvoyance.

Clairvoyance (千里眼, Senrigan): A secret art passed down through generations in the Oni tribe.[3] It enables Ram to synchronize with the vision of those who have the same wavelength, allowing her to overlap her vision with another being. While she's usually able to synchronize her vision with anyone she wishes to, there are a few exceptions, one of which being "high-ranking" individuals such as Roswaal. If such people close off their heart, Ram is unable to use Clairvoyance on them. Also, even if she can connect to them, if they have their eyes closed or cannot see, she will not be able to see through their eyes. Although she is unable to defend herself while using it, it allows her to continuously switch between people. However, the side effect of the ability causes her veins to become prominent, shed tears of blood from one eye, and legs to shake uncontrollably.

Synesthesia (共感覚, Kyōkankaku): An ability that she shares with her sister. It allows them to share their feelings and emotions with each other through telepathy.[4] Ram is even able to borrow Rem's horn and use it to greatly amplify her own fighting strength.[5]

Magic (魔法, Mahō): Ram is able to use wind magic and is extremely skilled with it. However, due to the loss of her horn, she cannot display the full might of her skill with her wind magic so freely. She has shown to use her magic to boost the piercing power of weapons like arrows and retrieve fallen objects, as well as mimic techniques utilized by her opponents, such as the invisible blade technique used by Lye Batenkaitos.

  • Fura (フーラ): Ram shoots wind slashes with a super high speed that can cut through wood, stone, and flesh with ease.
    • El Fura (エル・フーラ): Ram unleashes a blade of wind, travelling at maximum velocity. It is noted that the attack can't be physically countered.
    • Ul Fura (ウル・フーラ): Ram is capable of rewriting the world around her, transforming the air around her into blades of wind, which are sent hurling towards her enemies. The blades travel sporadically and without a set course, turning their target into minced meat.
    • Al Fura (アル・フーラ): Ram unleashes an extremely devastating torrent of wind blades that destroy everything and everyone in its path. The unleashed wind blades are described as having the force of a gigantic dragon and the sharpness of a treasured sword. People who are hit with this spell immediately have their eardrums destroyed, their entire bodies slashed to pieces, and, at the end, not even a pool of blood is left of them.
  • Illusionism: Ram is capable of generating illusions using a combination of her Wind Magic and a hallucinatory drug.[6] Every illusion she creates through the scent of a flower is implied to have a flower in it, which is the key to dispel the enchantment, such as when Subaru is freed from one of Ram's illusions after Julius's quasi-spirit of fire, Ia, burned a flower nearby.
Ram - Martial Arts-Melee

Ram easily overpowering a transformed Garfiel.

Martial Arts: Ram is shown to be very skilled at hand-to-hand combat and has an exceptional awareness of her own body's limits. Her knee kicks and elbow punches are capable of shattering bones and rupturing internal organs. In Arc 6, she displays her true strength by cladding herself with Wind Magic and combining that with martial arts in which she is able to amplify the speed and direction of her attacks, as well as cut through foes easily with wind from her limbs, making her an extremely proficient opponent who's able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of transformed Garfiel and Lye Batenkaitos. During the fight against Garfiel in Arc 4, she was able to use her powers to greatly boost her combat abilities for a short amount of time, but at a cost of vomiting blood and rendering herself unable to move for a long period of time. If Otto had not used his Divine Protection to distract Garfiel, she would have died in the midst of her battle.

Intelligence: Aside from her combative abilities, Ram is incredibly intelligent. Having received a formal education thanks to the patronage of Mathers, both Ram and Rem excelled academically. She has excellent observational skills and is a strong judge of character. Unlike her sister, Ram is able to discern that Subaru is not a threat, despite the scent of the Witch of Envy that rests on him. She was also able to understand that Subaru wanted Garfiel's necklace from observing his line of questioning, even though Subaru didn't convey this information to her. Ram is adept at household chores due to her years of servitude under Lord Roswaal L. Mathers. However, despite being teamed up with Subaru a majority of the time, Ram and her partner only completed around twenty percent of the workload, leaving the rest to Rem. Ram's cooking is only subpar, as she herself claimed her best dish was steamed potatoes.

Ram's Wand

Equipment: Ram usually uses a wand that Roswaal fashioned from her horn when fighting.[7] It helps her better channel her mana to reduce the burden of using magic. During the events of Arc 3, Ram uses the wand while fighting Wilhelm and Ricardo in close combat.

Trivia
