Joshua Juukulius

A frail and sickly boy in his youth, Joshua was the only son of House Juukulius's family head. After meeting Julius, despite his jealousy of his abilities, he became a fervent admirer of his and followed him even in the Royal Selection. However, just before the Battle for Priestella, Joshua unluckily stumbled across the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, who ate his name and memories, putting him in a vegetative-like state. Currently, Joshua is yet to wake up.

Appearance

Joshua is an elegant and handsome young man with a clear and slender face and long, light purple hair that he regularly ties into a tail, leaving it to elegantly fall down his shoulders. He has bright and sparkling, yellow slant up eyes that give off a sharp look which left a pretty bad first impression on Subaru. His black clothes are well tailored and perfectly fit his slender physique; paired with his monocle, they give off a strict and scholarly impression and one can easily figure out his social standing. He's described to give off an impression of a boy who would best fit into a quiet room, immersed in literature - which coincidentally was how he spent most of his childhood. Despite that, Joshua is extremely well mannered, and his posture is elegant and befitting of a high ranking noble.

Due to his illness, Joshua is physically very weak and quickly runs out of stamina. As a child, he spent his days buried in books and observing his brother Julius practicing with a sword, often wishing he could join him.

Personality

Unlike his brother Julius, Joshua does not have the same composed personality, as shown when he gets flustered with the antics of the Emilia Camp members. Despite this, he has a serious yet amiable personality, and Natsuki Subaru considers him easier to get along with than Julius. He respects his brother to the utmost degree and cannot stop when he starts talking about him, and likewise, he has a great respect for spirits and the people who are able to contract with them, which he displayed upon meeting Subaru and Beatrice. He has also developed a passion for art and painting.

Even with his utmost calm and collected personality, he was previously subtly racist towards demi-humans, with Julius describing that Joshua had a narrowed view towards the world. Since then, he has shed his prejudice, and he has shown not to be fazed when dealing with either members of the Anastasia Camp, which is comprised of many demi-humans, or even Emilia, someone who was hated and feared for being a silver-haired half elf who bore a resemblance to the Witch of Envy.

Despite all this, due to his frail condition, Joshua was jealous of his brother, even bordering on a slight hatred, which Roy Alphard stated using Joshua's memories.

History

Joshua was born sickly until he was 14 and hasn't learned combat skills because of this. In his youth, he met Julius shortly after his adoption into his uncle's family. Since then, the two have managed to get along quite well, and Julius always did his best to accommodate his brother, such as climbing a tree to pick an appa for Joshua. Though he never said so out loud, this stirred his jealousy. However, as he watched Julius's feats growing up, his admiration long since outweighed his envy, and he started learning clerical duties.

At some point before the Royal Selection's start, Anastasia Hoshin visited House Juukulius in an effort to expand her business into Lugunica. While Joshua was concerned over her presence as well as the presence of demi-humans, he shared these concerns with his brother, though he was scolded for his narrow sightedness. After meeting Anastasia and her party, he came to respect her and her business-oriented mind. After learning of Anastasia's qualification to become Lugunica's monarch and her official induction into the Royal Selection, Julius and Joshua, alongside other members of the Iron Fang, began helping her set up her business in Lugunica, and he joined his brother in joining the Anastasia Camp. He also came to look up to Tivey Pearlbaton after meeting him, and he began mimicking wearing a monocle.

Abilities

Magic: Though he has not been shown to use magic, he has an affinity for water magic.

Trivia

• According to the author, Joshua's birthday is January 10.
• Joshua wears a monocle because he thinks Tivey looks cool wearing it, so he decided to imitate him.
• Joshua started respecting Julius when he was around 7 years old.
• The only reason why Joshua decided to serve Anastasia Hoshin is due to Julius' influence on him. Without Julius, he wouldn't have joined her camp.^[1]
• Originally, rather than Lye, it was his brother Roy who was responsible for eating Joshua's name and memories. However, in the shop special release of Joshua Juukulius's Careful Second Encyclopedia, the illustration incorrectly depicted Lye instead. To remedy this, in the release of Tanpenshuu Volume 11, it was rewritten so that Lye devoured Roy instead.
