Julius Juukulius/Relationships

Family

Joshua Juukulius

Joshua and Julius share a very close relationship, befitting that of two brothers, . The two grew up together in the Juukulius manor and, due to Joshua's condition, he spent much of his childhood bedridden and observing his older brother practicing with the sword. Julius loves Joshua dearly, and often spent hours and hours in his room, reading him stories and conversing with him about different topics.

When they were both small children, Julius snuck Joshua out of the mansion and the two went on a long ride with Julius' Earth Dragon. Later, Joshua developed a severe cough which almost killed him. To this day, Julius blames himself for that little incident.

His contracted spirits

Thanks to his Divine Protection of Gathering Spirits, spirits are naturally drawn to him. In fact, according to the author, numerous spirits fought each other until the present six - Ia, Kua, Aro, Iku, In, and Nes - were left standing. All of this was simply for the spirits to determine who would get to be contracted to Julius, and this took place without his knowledge. As Quasi-spirits, which he would refer to as his buds, they would stick by his side even through life and death situations, and they would follow his orders precisely. Naturally, he would grow to love them like family.

During the events of Arc 5, Julius would have his name devoured by Roy Alphard, causing his buds to forget him, and their contract would be left in an ambiguous state. Had not it been for the contract they didn’t remember or his Divine Protection, the buds likely would have left him. However, throughout the events of Arc 6, Julius would come to terms with his state and sever his contract with them, something that hurt both him and them. When he would ask them immediately after to make a contract with him again, they would do so, allowing them to restart their relationship from scratch. Similarly, because of this, they would evolve into proper Spirits, and Julius would begin referring to them as his maidens.

Anastasia Camp

Anastasia Hoshin

Julius has known Anastasia for a while due to Anastasia’s potential business ventures into Lugunica. Upon entering Lugunica, she made contact with the Juuklius House in hopes of attempting to take her business multinational, leading to her meeting Julius. After a conversation that seemed to not go the way she wanted, Julius would witness her pick up the fallen Dragon Insignia, and seeing it glow, he would offer to show her an up close view of the country’s more internal workings.

When he would take her to the Royal Capital, there would be conflict that would nearly result in her declining to participate in the Royal Selection. However, her behavior was a ploy so that Julius would be her knight during the selection, and thus, he has been her knight ever since, and he has displayed absolute loyalty to her. This loyalty has put him in a rather precarious position with his family, backing a foreigner for the throne, but he would not let this bother him as it was his choice to follow her.

Naturally, he often enjoyed spending time with her, and he would be amused seeing her various expressions and genuine responses to people like Emilia, often to Anastasia’s annoyance. Their bond would be so strong that in Arc 5, Anastasia would lock herself inside her Od just so that she wouldn’t forget Julius if he’d been devoured by Gluttony. Furthermore, he would be shocked to find out that Eridna was in Anastasia’s body, and he would feel depressed and frustrated that he couldn’t realize it, despite the predicament he was already in. That said, thanks to his own resolve while fighting Reid, he would resolve himself to restart his relationship with Anastasia, like his spirits, and he would do so immediately after the fight when Eridna would force her back into her body.

Ricardo Welkin

Despite being a higher class, he views Ricardo as a trustworthy ally and a comrade. When Julius began to doubt himself during the events of Arc 5, Ricardo lifted his spirits and remove any doubt he had. Ricardo sacrificed his arm in order to defend Julius from Roy, but his name was eaten and he was defeated regardless.

Felt Camp

Reinhard van Astrea

When he was around ten years old, Julius met Reinhard for the first time and felt extremely ashamed about their encounter. Despite that, they only became properly acquainted after Julius was seventeen, and Reinhard does not recall meeting him earlier. Julius considers Reinhard to be one of his best friends and trusts him with his life. Although sometimes the two have occasional disagreements, Reinhard continues to respect Julius' decisions. During Reinhard's duel with the Empire's Blue Lightning–Cecilus Segmunt, it was hinted that Julius developed a great deal of jealousy towards Reinhard due to his strength and raw skill.

Following his duel with Reid Astrea, Julius finally swore to crossing swords with Reinhard in a sparring match.

Crusch Camp

Felix Argyle

Though he was commissioned to watch over him when he joined the Royal Guard, they got along quite well and had a friendly relationship.

Emilia Camp

Natsuki Subaru

Julius and Subaru's relationship started out on the wrong foot; mostly because Julius's noble mannerisms caused him to come over as haughty from Subaru's 21st-century perspective. Still, it didn't turn truly antagonistic until Subaru offended the whole Royal Knight garrison, prompting him to publicly humiliate him in a mock duel. However, in a way, Julius was actually protecting Subaru here, as most of the Royal Guard outright called for his execution before this.

Despite their bad start, their relationship got better following the battle with the White Whale, after they both apologized and Julius even admitted he may have acted rashly. The two then proceeded to work together to defeat Petelgeuse. However, both still voiced their dislike for each other afterward.

During the events of Arc 5, Julius is shown to have a newfound respect for Subaru, even revealing to him private aspects of Reinhard's life and the circumstances of his family, acknowledging him as a friend of the Sword Saint, and thanking him for showing anger for the sake of their shared friend.

After having his name eaten, Subaru is now the only one who can remember Julius. During their trip to the Pleiades Watchtower, in search of a way to restore Gluttony's victims, their relationship would significantly improve, and eventually, they both became proper friends with mutual respect for each other.

Alongside Anastasia, he would cross two countries to help recover Subaru from Vollachia. Upon arriving, he would be shocked at Subaru’s infantilized state, yet not quite surprised that he had been put in yet another precarious position. Still, this hasn’t changed the knight’s trust in him. Not long after they’d reunite, they would engage in conversation where Subaru would indeed call Julius his friend. Immediately after, Subaru would suddenly kick into action, with Julius not at all questioning him and proceeding to listen to Subaru’s orders.

When talking over how to handle Spica, it would be Julius who would lead Subaru towards offering his hand to Spica, since his views actually align rather well with Subaru’s. Later, when Subaru would return to Lupugana, Julius would pray for Subaru’s safety and would trust in his ability to end the conflict.

It should be noted that in a 2024 Q&A, the author claimed that the friendship level between the two in Priestella was around 5/10. By Vollachia, this has increased to about 6/10.

Emilia

Although their first meetings are not shown but despite being of the opposite factions, Julius holds great respect for Emilia and also admires her. In volume 4 epilogue, he says that Emilia's nature is too unprofitable, but he doesn't want that to change because that is what makes her way of living noble and beautiful as she is.

Royal Family

Fourier Lugunica

Despite initially believing that the royal family were more figureheads than leaders and still respecting them regardless, after seeing Fourier acting as a true leader and Fourier being the one to show him his pride and to calm him down under dire circumstances, he gained a newfound respect for him, and he pledged his loyalty to him anew. However, this was short lived as Fourier soon succumbed to his illness. It is unknown what he thinks of Fourier's death as of now.

Nine Divine Generals

Balleroy Temeglyph

Due to the staged rebellion in Vollachia some months prior to the start of the series, Julius and Balleroy were forced to engage in combat with each other. Due to the nature Balleroy’s skills, Julius had a hard time dealing with him, and he very well would have lost the fight if not for Ferris’s assistance. Later on in Arc 6, Julius would witness the Divine General’s life through his Book of the Dead, leaving him somewhat shaken. After what he had seen, however, he respected his path and decisions and would keep what he saw in the book to himself, even from someone like Roswaal.

In Arc 8, he would be shocked to see Balleroy revived as a zombie. Because of this, he would inform Roswaal of how he managed to defeat the man, partially resulting in the man’s downfall.

Kararagians

Halibel

The two would first meet when Julius accompanied Anastasia to Kararagi during their journey to retrieve Subaru. Julius respect Halibel, and the Admirer would praise him as well. During their travels, Halibel would even tell him the story of how he and Anastasia met.

Witch Cult

Roy Alphard

Julius had an ominous feeling that creeped him out when Roy kept calling him "brother". During their second clash in Priestella, Roy would eat Julius's name, erasing the memories of him from everyone he met, and he would reveal that he ate Joshua's name and memory, thus erasing his existence from the world. Unable to defeat him, Roy would escape.

In the Pleiades Watchtower, he would confront the Sin Archbishop again, though not as himself since he would be overtaken by the soul of Reid Astrea. Following his defeat, Roy would be left unconscious, and Julius promptly sealed him. Unfortunately, his name has yet to return.

Others

Reid Astrea

During the events of Arc 6, Julius was forced to duel the legendary First Generation's Sword Saint Reid Astrea. From the very beginning, their ideals heavily clashed with each others', as Julius–the Finest of Knights–could not believe or accept the crude and vulgar ways of the Sword Saint Reid Astrea–the pinnacle of the sword. Despite their heavy disagreements, however, Julius displayed unbound respect for Reid, even though it pissed the Sword Saint off to an alarming extent. Due to Julius' chivalry and honoured way of life, Reid did not hesitate to give the Knight a beating as often as he could. Finally, during their last duel, Julius managed to push Reid to his limit, landing a would-be devastating blow to the Sword Saint's face and blowing off his eyepatch. Following that exchange, Reid was finally willing to accept Julius a knight, remembering his full name, grasping an actual sword (rather than the pair of chopsticks he wielded up to that point), going beyond the rules of the trial, as Julius has already passed it when successfully landing a blow. After a stroke of luck, Julius managed to pierce Reid's chest, landing a devastating and final blow of the duel–due to Reid's incompatibility with Gluttony's body, his soul (which Gluttony ate, prior to the duel) shattered, marking the end of the First Generation's Sword Saint. However, right before departing from the world for the final time, Reid delivered a bit of praise towards Julius, and Julius admitted that it was Reid's win from the very start.

Spica

Though the two have yet to properly meet, he would learn of her existence as a new version of Rui Arneb. Julius points out to Subaru that Sin Archbishops will not be forgiven by the world, but he also implies that if she wasn’t one that there was a chance, giving Subaru the courage he needed to confront the girl. This comes in part from his idealistic view that people are good deep down, and he clearly wants to see that in Spica’s case as well, having heard what she had done for Subaru and Rem during their unwelcome visit to Vollachia.
