Golden Siblings Part 1

Summary

Fredrica has a day off and decides to spend some time with Garfiel in order to better their sibling relationship. After consulting with Ram, Garfiel agrees to go to the city of Costuul with Fredrica. It is one of the five great cities of Lugunica with a population exceeding 100,000 and is quite near the New Roswaal Manor. Since Garfiel has never seen anything outside the Sanctuary he is quite amazed by the city and Fredrica explains the significance of Costuul as a key industrial hub that thrives on Magicreation Tools: complex machines powered by mana stones, first developed with the involvement of Roswaal's predecessor.

They explore the city for a little until Garfiel suddenly spots a strange, dog-sized creature covered in shimmering, hard skin resembling coiled flames and water. The creature emits a sense of danger and attacks them by emitting a pulse of energy that disrupts the mana in the air but is defeated shortly after. Garfiel's rather careless attacks caused the destruction of the power-plant they were at, which leads the demi-human siblings to a meeting with Leno Rex, the mayor of Costuul.

Leno tells the siblings about the ongoing and escalating issue of these ominous beings called "Lightbugs", which are causing significant disruptions to factory operations. Leno wants to contact Roswaal since he is the Margrave of the West and therefore also sort of responsible for the city of Costuul. While talking they are once again attacked by a Lightbug, but Garfiel swiftly beats it. They speculate whether the Lightbugs might be targeting Garfiel and Fredrica when the city hall they're in suddenly starts to collapse. The demi-human siblings save the mayor and the other 12 employees that were inside the building and are now sure that this was a targetted attack and someone is controlling the Lightbugs. Their concerns get validated when a towering mass of shimmering, chaotic Lightbugs forms in the factory district.

The first part of this story ends with the siblings complaining about this terrible day off.
