Another World, Another Episode

Another World, Another Episode (あなざーわーるど あなざーえぴそーど) is a limited edition side story written by Nagatsuki Tappei that was available during the first week of the Isekai Quartet The Movie ~Another World~ film's showings in Japanese theaters.

Although this short story does not occur in Re:Zero's canon, it prominently features the thoughts and recounts of Alec Hoshin, better known to history as Hoshin of the Wilderness, a man from 400 years prior to the main story's events who was involved in the founding of Kararagi and embarked on a journey to, in his own words, “save the world”.

Summary

A man wakes up to find himself in the middle of a barren wasteland. He grasps the situation he is in and narrates previous hellish situations he has been in, such as being chased by a Dragon, swallowed up by a flood, asked to participate in a bloodless siege of a fort run by a “tribe of savages”, and was on the verge of death for three days and nights because of a strange illness. He reminisces to when Reid and Farsale took him to the Great Waterfall on a dark night, and a time when Echidna accidentally created an explosion in a forest with magic. He is impressed at how he has managed to survive for so long. The night before, the man and his companions were supposed to be staying at an inn for the first time in a while. He felt concerns over his bad leg and cane putting a burden on his younger companions, who were youthful compared to him, a middle-aged man. He wanted to sleep after giving the “massawge” he learned from Flugel but unexpectedly woke up elsewhere. He was remorseful toward Flugel for not listening to him when he said he went through a similar experience in the past.

The man decides he needs to figure out how to live in the wasteland, muttering that a hermit like him grew to be bold and that he would have died like a wretch had Satella not found him. His provisions and cane were still with him; losing the latter would cause him to have difficulties walking and Farsale would have an averse reaction if he found out. Despite the debt he owned to his companions starting to approach the point where he could not document it, he did not mind it ballooning if it meant he could reunite with them. Were the others to be going through the same experience as the man was, as the second-most likely person to die in their group, Satella would earnestly search for him, if Echidna lost sight of her then she would be frantic, Reid and Farsale would manage, and Flugel, the most likely to die, would be more likely to throw himself into danger. He resolves himself to discover his whereabouts and return to where he was before. The journey they were on was one of great of importance, since their aim was to “save the world”.
