Natsuki Subaru/Relationships

Family

Natsuki Kenichi

Growing up, Subaru looked up to his dad like a hero, and anytime he was compared to him made him feel a swell of pride. However, over time, thanks to the constant comparison combined with the fact that his friends were slowly leaving him behind, he gained a severe inferiority complex. This was so severe that he decided to change schools so that nobody could compare him to his dad. However, when he was pushing people away by trying to mimic his dad, he became depressed. Wishing for his parents to hate him so as to give them a reason not to deal with him anymore, he stopped going to school and started locking himself in his room. The last known interaction between the two is unknown, but according to the author, after Subaru’s disappearance, his worried parents launched an unsuccessful police investigation into it.

Though it wasn’t in reality, he met his dad again in the first trial of the Sanctuary, and the conversation he had with him allowed him to feel better about himself, realizing his dad would never hate him. As of Arc 7, he still thinks of his dad as an awesome person, and he still thinks highly of him.

Natsuki Naoko

Subaru loves his mother very dearly, and they often had ridiculous conversations, such as talks regarding mayonnaise. However, like with his dad, he started hoping that she would begin to hate him when he became depressed and started locking himself in his room. On the day he disappeared, Naoko told him to be safe while Subaru ignored her, something which he now regrets. After his disappearance, his worried parents launched an unsuccessful police investigation to find him.

Though it wasn’t in reality, he was able to meet his mother in the first trial of the Sanctuary. Here, they interacted with each other like normal. Being able to talk with her again boosted his confidence, and he was able to tell her goodbye, unlike his final day in that world. As of now, he says that his mother is the woman he respects the most in the world, and he often takes her words to heart.

Emilia Camp

Emilia

Subaru fell in love with her at first glance, largely due to her being the first one to show him kindness when he was transported to the new world. He devoted himself to protecting her no matter what happens to him, even if that meant having to repeatedly go back in time by dying. Initially, she didn't understand the meaning of his playful flirting with her, but gradually, she began to develop reciprocal feelings for him. Their relationship is one of the main themes of the series and, in fact, the main reason for Subaru's development as an individual. Thanks to her, he gradually got rid of his impulsive personality and learned to be a more reliable, judicious, and useful person than how he was at the beginning of the novel. Later Subaru officially became her knight which symbolizes the strong bond of trust she has developed towards him.

Ever since he confessed his love to her and even kissed her, their relationship has grown. That said, romantically, there hadn’t been any improvement over the year that passed after Arc 4, as Emilia herself was grappling over what it meant to love someone romantically, though she has stated twice that she already knew who she would fall in love with. In Arc 6, in the Pleiades Watchtower, she would not like it when Shaula pounced on Subaru, lightly assaulting him out of jealousy. When he was amnesiac and didn’t know who she was to him, Emilia would find herself heartbroken and wanting to hear the Subaru she knew again, including the habits she had grown attached to. Likewise, it would be Emilia who would fix his resolve in a failed loop when he didn’t know who to trust or what to do. Later, when her name was devoured and everyone forgot her, when Subaru showed that he remembered her and even regained his memory, her morale was boosted greatly as the one she wanted most to remember her did. Finally, during her fight with Volcanica, she would unveil her Ice Soldiers, modeling them after Subaru so that she could fight alongside him even when he wasn’t there.

When Subaru was flung to Vollachia, Emilia would feel desperate to retrieve him, going so far as to smuggle herself into the country to do so. Her worry was so great that when the group that went to Chaosflame returned, she impatiently made her way to the group so that she could reunite with him. When they finally reunited in Arc 8, she would be heavily relieved, and she would find his infantilized form cute. Likewise, Subaru was elated to see her again, having been worried for her safety. Later, she claimed that she would be willing to wait for him to grow up again if he was to remain small, leaving Subaru shocked. Seeing him grown again gave her relief, though after Priscilla’s death, she was worried for Subaru, as her death had hit him hard.

In Arc 9, when Subaru decided to take Al to the watchtower as per his request, Emilia felt very anxious about it, as she was afraid he would be taken away again, this time perhaps to somewhere like Gusteko. While she couldn’t be with him, she tasked Beatrice with staying by his side and keeping an eye on him.

Puck

Subaru has a relatively positive friendship with Puck. Though Puck found it curious how Subaru knew about him in the beginning, since he didn’t seem like a dangerous person, he didn’t think negative of him. In fact, he would be the one to teach Subaru how magic worked in this world, even teaching him the use of Shamak. Similarly, Subaru can sometimes be seen petting Puck’s fur and messing around with him. And of course, both of them share protectiveness of Emilia.

This said, Puck has been responsible for killing Subaru three times in Arc 3, two of which he was apologetic about, and the third of which, he was angry for Subaru breaking his promise to Emilia, returning to the mansion when he was asked not to, and accidentally leading Emilia to her death. When Subaru returned in the main timeline, though he was angry at him for the former two problems, Puck would cooperate with Subaru to help her escape harm, and their relationship seemed to remain on friendly terms, with Puck even informing Subaru of the Authority of Gluttony.

However, in Arc 4, Subaru was forced to draw Puck out of his slumber. Due to the incident surrounding the Sanctuary, the two cooperated in defeating Roswaal, with Puck severing his contract with Emilia. Because he would be forced to sleep for a long time after this, he would entrust Emilia to Subaru’s care in his absence. At present, both Subaru and Emilia await for Puck to wake.

Beatrice

In the beginning, Subaru stumbled upon her when he attempted to return to his room, where he found her to be interesting and began calling her Beako. His appearance surprised Beatrice, though she didn’t seem to care much about him, and she would even drain his mana from him to knock him out. That said, in one of the failed loops, she willingly made a contract with him to protect him from harm despite having only met him the one time, something that would last even past Rem's death. In the main timeline, because he came to meet her several times for her rather than knowledge, she started becoming more and more interested. She even ended up helping him regarding the curses that would plague his body.

Because of her interest, she would ultimately go along with Roswaal’s plan, leading Subaru to the Sanctuary in Arc 4. In one of the failed loops, she would attempt to save him by pulling him into the Forbidden Library, causing him to lash out since he didn’t know what would happen if he didn’t die. Of course, he would grow somewhat hostile when he saw her Tome of Wisdom. Later in another failed loop, he would successfully manage to pull her out of the Forbidden Library, though shortly after, he would be met with failure, and she would attempt to save him by teleporting him back to the Sanctuary.

He would end up learning of her history through Echidna, causing him to grow angry at how she was treated by her Mother. Of course, Beatrice continued to wait for “That Person”, and she even came to believe that Subaru may have been them. However, when he came to bring her out of the burning mansion, he claimed otherwise, causing her to throw him out. Not allowing this to stop him, he kept pursuing her to convince her to leave the Forbidden Library, causing her to try and toss him out again to save his life. When it finally came down to the last remaining door, he would say once again that he was not “That Person”. However, he claimed that he would make her much happier than some random person she didn’t even know, bringing her to tears. Saying that she would eventually outlive him, she feared this, but Subaru claimed to stick by her side and make her so happy that she would never forget him. Because of this, she finally left the mansion with him, formed a contract with him, she would finally call him by his name, and they would go to fight side by side against the Great Rabbit.

After this, they would become practically inseparable, with Beatrice often seen by his side, and she would sometimes even sneak into bed with him. In Arc 5, she was seen to often go along with his antics, both playing around with him in Roswaal’s current mansion and going along with him and Liliana in Priestella. Of course, her faith in Subaru is extremely strong, going so far as to say that Subaru was the greatest possible partner she could have, even pushing the likes of Julius away.

Naturally, the two fight side by side, even using brand new spells the two came up with together. That said, when he would become heavily injured by Regulus, she would become extremely desperate to save his life, using her stock of magic to heal him and everyone else nearby. Being left in a comatose state for the majority of the battle, Subaru would be left worried about her. When she woke up later that evening, though she wanted to go to his side, she would settle for helping Otto, believing that Subaru is fighting a battle that doesn’t require her. This resolve is further cemented when she saw her enemy at the time, Lye Batenkaitos, mimicking the mannerisms of the sleeping Rem, insisting to Otto that they must not allow Subaru to see this, as he would be left broken beyond the possibility of recovering.

In Arc 6, after their talks with Roswaal before heading to the Pleiades Watchtower, she told the man that she would not allow Subaru to become like how Roswaal wanted. After being separated in the Agria Dunes, upon reuniting, she had apparently cried in worry. Later, in one of the failed loops, when Subaru was stricken by one of Shaula’s stinger spells, Beatrice would desperately cry for him not to die, holding him in her arms. He would unconsciously use his soul tainting Authority of Sloth to wipe away her tears, though shortly after, both would die. In the same arc, when Subaru lost his memories, she would be extremely worried for him. In fact, in one of the failed loops, she attempted to comfort him after he read Meili’s Book of the Dead. When he would regain his memories, she would be extremely relieved, and the two would proceed to fight together.

However, the two would be separated for months after Subaru was sent to Vollachia. Because of this, she would be worried about him for both the way Vollachia worked and for his constitution, aware that his faulty Gate would end up leaving him in danger. Likewise, Subaru worried for her since her main source of mana was also gone. The two would meet again towards the end of the arc, when Beatrice nearly gave her life to prevent a massive attack from firing. Though heavily relieved to be together again, she would find herself worried for both his tiny state and the sheer mass of mana welling up inside him, silently claiming it to be too much.

In Arc 8, while she found the infantilized Subaru to be cute, she stated she wanted Subaru to grow again so that he could hold her in his arms. Furthermore, though she was still skeptical about Spica, she would trust Subaru’s judgment with giving her a second chance, placing her faith in him.

Rem

When the two first met, their relationship was hostile as Rem could sense the scent of the Witch of Envy emanating off of him, causing her to be suspicious of him. This would lead her to take his life once, as well as directly attack him with the assistance of Ram who prevents him from fleeing by cutting his leg off and brutally torturing him for information before Ram finally killed him; an act that would spark fear in Subaru's heart. After she died from the curse that was originally meant for Subaru in another timeline, he remembered the compassion she and her sister showed him while he was sleeping and resolved to save Rem. When he confirmed the source of the curse, he worked with Rem to protect the villagers and ended up saving her from the witchbeasts at the cost of getting cursed again. This would lead her to attempt to destroy all the witchbeasts at the cost of her own life until Subaru and Ram were able to return her to her senses before Roswaal's arrived and destroyed the surrounding witchbeasts, burning them to ash. Afterwards, he would convince her to let go of her past resentful feelings and look to the future.

After being rescued by Subaru, both physically and emotionally, Rem quickly develops strong romantic feelings for him. In her own words, he became a hero in her eyes, and feeling responsible for her importance to him, Rem took on the functions of moral support and combat protection for Subaru, such as when she restrained his despair and returned Subaru's faith in himself before the final battle of the 3rd Arc, arguing that "the person who saved her and who she loves cannot despair and give up."

Before the battle with the White Whale, Rem also proposed to become Subaru's second wife and after the battle, she even went as far as to fake her death to force a confession out of him. From this, Subaru told Rem that he will take her as his "second wife" only if Emilia agrees to it and Rem says she will try her best to persuade Emilia. Later while riding in the dragon carriage with Emilia, Subaru admits to her that he loves the two of them more or less equally.

After the defeat of the White Whale, Rem's convoy was ambushed by the Sin Archbishops of Greed and Gluttony which resulted in the Gluttony archbishop, Lye Batenkaitos, eating her name and memories, effectively erasing her existence from the world and everyone's memories, putting her into suspended animation. After learning of her bizarre and incurable condition, Subaru started blaming himself for what happened and even went as far as committing suicide and testing where the last "save point." After realizing how there's no way of saving her from the grasp of Gluttony's Authority, he vowed himself to defeat the Sin Archbishops and save her.

During the events of Arc 4, the Witch of Lust Carmilla takes on Rem's appearance as Subaru still viewed Rem as his mental support and cherished her after he was left devastated due to the second trial.

One of Subaru's main goals were to wake Rem from her slumber. Although during the events in Arc 5, he asked Julius to take care of the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony and prioritized rescuing Emilia from Greed's grasp.

During Arc 6, Rem manifested in the Corridor of Memories in front of an amnesiac, despairing Subaru and revitalized his will to stand up and save everyone.

Roughly a year and several months after the incident in which Rem lost her memories and name, Subaru and his companions managed to defeat and kill Lye in the climax of the sixth arc, which resulted in Rem awakening but suffering from a sort of amnesia as her memories had not returned and therefore, she was unable to remember Subaru. As a result, her interactions with Subaru reverted to the hostility of before, due in part to the scent of the Witch of Envy and that fact that he tried to abandon an amnesiac Rui Arneb, who, as far as Rem could tell, was just an innocent child. She attempted to flee from him and set up several traps to keep him at bay, but was eventually forced to work with him.

Over the course of their time in Vollachia, Rem’s former feelings for Subaru seemed slowly to return, but due to her missing memories, these inexplicable feelings only managed to confuse her more as she could not understand nor remember why she feels the way she does about Subaru. This only worsens upon seeing Emilia’s interactions with him in Arc 8, feeling envious of her relationship with Subaru and unable to understand she was feeling said emotion. As she saw Subaru off from Garkla’s main building, she called out to him while smiling, expecting him to return and tell her everything when he came back.

When the two were leaving Vollachia, they each felt troubled by their journey up to this point, and they shared in the pain of Priscilla’s death and their temporary departure with Spica. After returning to Lugunica, when Subaru decided to go to the Pleiades Watchtower again, where he had been flung from in the first place, Rem teased him by claiming that she would be sure not to remember anything until he returned safely, using that as a means of encouragement.

Ram

Ram has a rather amicable relationship with Subaru despite the constant disparaging remarks she throws at him. During his time as a butler, she was in charge of teaching him about their daily duties. She even took the time to teach him how to write so he became more accustomed to life at the manor. Ram was also the first person to vouch for his character when it came to the possibility of him being a spy, even when his past was still virtually unknown. Despite harshly assessing his skills as a butler, she nevertheless held a sense of fondness for him as her junior colleague. Ram would later come to trust Subaru's intuition, even if the likelihood of the scenario had no basis due to his unexpected successes, as seen in the beginning of Arc 6.

After Rem had her memories devoured by Gluttony, Subaru made it his personal goal to make Ram feel like an older sister again, often calling her Big Sis in hopes of helping her become attached to Rem again. By Arc 6, the two would both be in charge of taking care of the slumbering girl.

In said Arc, the two show off more of their trust and care towards each other, something often unseen. When the two were trapped beneath the sands of the Augria Dunes, after Subaru had gone through one failed loop and was on the verge of vomiting, she helped him get it out of his system, patting his back as she did so. Shortly afterward, when Subaru was trapped while facing a centaur-like witchbeast, she would jump down to assist him, though she would fall unconscious shortly after. Despite them being saved, Subaru passed out with her in his arms, holding onto her so tightly that even Emilia couldn’t pry him off of her. When she woke up and heard about this, she comically brought out her wand to attack him in embarrassment. Later, she would also seem to act like an emotional pillar for him, flicking him on the forehead after he’d become depressed about the way he was handling the situation between Julius and Eridna.

After Subaru became amnesiac, she was emotionally distraught. In fact, in several of the loops, she even denied that he had amnesia, thinking that Subaru was plotting something strange again and asking him to tell her what he was thinking. However, because he was being serious about his memory loss, she pinned him to the wall in her frustration, not wanting it to be true. Furthermore, in the failed loop where the amnesiac Subaru pretended to have his memories, she would call him an impostor and angrily yell at him to tell her where he took the real Subaru. When he claimed amnesia, her rage would intensify that much further, and she would attempt to attack Subaru while thinking he was attempting to trick everyone.

Naturally, she would be relieved that Subaru had regained his memories. However, she wouldn’t show it on her face. Similarly, when Subaru decided to take on the burden of her pain, Ram would have mixed thoughts about this, though she would take full advantage of having more access to her power. Later, after having defeated Lye Batenkaitos, the two would talk to each other about their current issue with Gluttony’s effects, not knowing what to expect. Shortly after, however, when both Spica and the shadow appeared, Subaru would toss her onto Patrasche and yell at them to get out, leaving himself susceptible to being taken away.

Naturally, Ram would go along with the majority of the camp to retrieve Subaru from Vollachia. Upon hearing him using the name Natsumi Schwartz, she was impressed with his wit despite his current situation, and when she met with Serena, though she got along with her, the moment she heard which side Subaru was on during the rebellion, she instantly pointed her wand at the woman in case she got in the way, showing her trust in Subaru’s judgment.

In Arc 8, when Subaru gave his decision to give Spica a second chance, Ram was the one to remind him that the world would not be so forgiving of her. That said, Ram did not go against his judgment either.

Roswaal L. Mathers

Subaru was originally impressed by Roswaal, admiring him as the head of Roswaal Manor and Emilia's primary benefactor despite the mage's eccentric behavior. He would even be impressed by the little bits of magic prowess the margrave had shown him, such as his flight and fire magics.

However, things would take a very sharp turn in Arcs 3 and 4. In the former, when the Witch Cult was on the move, Roswaal was nowhere to be seen, causing him to question where the man could be at so important of a time. In the latter arc, Roswaal would reveal his connection with the Witch of Greed, his goals, his uses for Subaru and Emilia, the fact that Roswaal was the one to hire Elsa Granhiert in Arcs 1 and 4, that he took a step back in Arc 3 while knowing of everything that would happen, that he knew of Subaru’s authority, and that he had planned for Subaru to become like him, thus his plot in the Sanctuary. Naturally, the two would have a hostile relationship throughout the arc, Roswaal stubbornly refusing to change, and Subaru not being able to forgive his crazed methods.

Throughout the various loops, Subaru would become less and less forgiving of the clown, especially after the fifth failed loop of the arc. However, in the main timeline, Subaru made a bet with Roswaal that he would come out victorious. Roswaal took this bet seriously, and when he lost, he placed an oath bound curse mark on himself that would burn him down to his soul if he broke his promise. Because he was still needed for Emilia to win the Royal Selection, he remained a member of the Emilia Camp, and he would give his full backing into making her the ruler. That said, he told Subaru that if he made even a single mistake, he would force Subaru to use his authority, even if it meant breaking his oath and burning his soul.

As he believed Subaru necessary for his plans, he attempted to keep him happy, nearly always siding with his decisions, even though Subaru doesn’t fully trust him. In Arc 6, he would fully approve of Subaru going to the Pleiades Watchtower, and he even suggested taking Rem with him, pointing out that he was very self-deprecating while claiming that he could be selfish every once in a while. Shortly after, having felt that Subaru took in the Authority of Greed, he felt that his plans were still moving forward.

In Arc 7, he made it his goal to retrieve Subaru from Vollachia, going so far as to smuggle himself into the country while using the name Dudley. He was even willing to kill an old friend if it meant retrieving him. An arc later, he sided with Subaru in each decision he made, such as fighting against the Great Disaster and allowing Spica to have a second chance. He also didn’t want to be on the receiving end of a lecture from him, making his protection of Beatrice that much greater than normal. That said, when it came time to reclaim Lupugana, Roswaal elected both himself and Emilia to go with the group, claiming that Subaru would be more “motivated” if they were, something Subaru recognized as a message guaranteeing that he would use his power.

As of Arc 9, Subaru noted that Roswaal did not kill everyone after he failed to save Priscilla. He does not know whether it was because of her position or if it had to do with internal changes. Either way, Subaru did not feel like he wanted to ask, and he prayed that the reason was the latter.

Petra Leyte

At first, Petra did not trust Subaru, thinking of him as a strange person. The next day, however, she seemed to trust him more since his demeanor seemed different from the previous day. After having had her life saved by him in Arc 2, Petra would feel grateful to him and apologetic that she was put in such a predicament. However, she would feel tremendously guilty for her actions when she saw Subaru injured and bedridden, leading her to run away, crying and confessing what she’d done to her parents. After getting encouragement from her parents, she would attempt to apologize to him when he visited the village, though she would run away when she couldn’t speak up. Subaru ended up finding her, however, and reassured her that he was fine. When she apologized, he accepted it, continuing to treat her with kindness, and she would end up developing a crush on him.

In Arc 3, she would stay by Emilia’s side as Subaru requested, and she would even keep it secret that he asked her to (though the other kids would reveal it to her). That said, she would feel envious toward her, causing her to attach herself to Subaru’s arm on the way back to the Royal Capital.

Because of her crush, when women were offered to work for Roswaal as a maid, she would go around the village and ask everyone to turn down the offer so that she could, all so that she could stay closer to Subaru. Similarly, so that she could be useful to both Subaru and the camp as a whole, she would dedicate herself to learning politics, magic, and how to be a maid over the year that she had the job.

Ever since, she would often find herself worrying about him and exasperated with his act of throwing himself into dangerous situations. Since she couldn’t go with him to Priestella due to a meeting she was forced to attend, she would make him promise to rest when he returned, though he would end up breaking this promise and upsetting her even more when he revealed that he was going somewhere far more dangerous, leading to her headbutting him.

When he was sent to Vollachia, she was worried about him, and like the majority of the camp, she would go with them to said country in an attempt to bring him home. Naturally, when Petra was reunited with an unconscious Subaru in Arc 8, she was the one who held Subaru’s hand while he slept, wanting to be the first one to talk to him when he awoke. Naturally though, she would find herself with complicated feelings about his decision for Spica, leading to her smacking Subaru for Otto.

Upon returning to Lugunica, having been anxious about Subaru returning to the Pleiades Watchtower, Petra decided to go with him to keep an eye on him. Some time after Subaru is sealed away by Al, Petra finds a Book of the Dead belonging to Subaru that Al planted as a trap to summon the Witch of Envy. She ends up reading it and learns about Subaru's Return by Death, becoming the first person close to him to learn his secret.

As of yet, Subaru is not aware of her crush on him.

Patrasche

Despite being from a very proud species of earth dragons, Patrasche was surprisingly fond of Subaru when they first met. During the events of Arc 3, the two would fight together against both the White Whale and Sloth, and as a reward for leading the charges against both enemies, he decided to take Patrasche with him.

Patrasche has shown immense loyalty towards Subaru on multiple occasions. In Arc 4, she attacked Garfiel when it seemed that he was attacking them upon arriving in the Forest of Kremaldy. Later in the same arc, during a failed loop, she even gave her life to protect Subaru from Garfiel when he was going on a rampage. Much later, in Arc 6, Patrasche would attempt to soothe the amnesiac Subaru when he didn’t know who to trust, even despite him stabbing her with blade, and she would sacrifice herself to help him escape from the shadow that was overtaking the tower. Towards the end, she even followed his order to escape ahead of Subaru with Ram, despite Subaru being left behind.

Despite all this, she often finds herself exasperated with Subaru, leading to her striking Subaru with her tail. She is also often left worrying about him, such as when Subaru was sent flying to Vollachia. When the two reunited in Arc 8, Patrasche made sure to hit him hard for worrying her.

Otto Suwen

Albeit adjudging Subaru a problematic person, Otto starts considering Subaru his friend during the events that take place at the Sanctuary (Arc 4). Otto is willing to help him out whenever possible - even shown to get slightly infuriated when Subaru thought that he would not understand his problems. Despite Otto's initial claims that their relationship revolves around profit, he cares for Subaru as a person. He demonstrated this by freeing Subaru, who was kidnapped by Garfiel, in one loop, after which Otto consoled him and told him that he came to save him solely because they are friends; later in the same loop, he even sacrificed his life to save Subaru from Garfiel. Otto consoled Subaru yet again before and after his discussion with Roswaal. Otto put his life on the line once more during the battle against Garfiel in the Battle of the Lost Forest of Cremaldi, in a scheme to give Subaru and Emilia time to talk.

Ever since then, he has been the one to keep Subaru and Emilia in check, and he often complains to Subaru over a drink. He respects Subaru’s naïveté, believing that that is what made him such a good person, as in the case with Emilia. However, he often finds himself frustrated with Subaru’s antics. This is most recognizable in Arc 8 in regards to Spica. Concerned over the safety of everyone, Subaru included, he simply couldn’t bring himself to align his views with Subaru. However, in spite of this, he would be sure to keep an eye on both of them. Later, he would even tell Roswaal that he would remain the stone in Subaru’s way to help keep him on the right path.

Like Emilia and the others, Otto was heavily against Subaru returning to the Pleiades Watchtower, as he had been fighting nonstop since the Battle for Priestella and the Pleiades Watchtower Expedition, and he wanted him to rest. Realizing that he wouldn’t be able to stop him, he tasked Garfiel with watching over him and protecting him.

Garfiel Tinzel

Initially, Subaru and Garfiel were on relatively friendly terms. That said, after Subaru died in the first loop of Arc 4, the scent of the Witch thickened on him. When Ryuzu smelled it on him, she told Garfiel, causing him to become increasingly hostile with every failed loop. In one of those loops, his hostility was so great that Garfiel imprisoned him and kept him isolated, and when Subaru escaped with the help of Otto, Ram, Patrasche, and the Arlam villagers, Garfiel slaughtered all of them just to get ahold of Subaru. That said, in the loop that followed, he had no issue with working with Subaru when faced with the possessed Emilia.

In the main timeline, Subaru discovered Garfiel’s history, and he would force Garfiel to face his past after coming to blows with him. Once Garfiel finished the first trial of the Sanctuary, he became able to relax more around Subaru and even tease him about kissing Emilia. Because of his defeat, he began respecting Subaru, and he would start to call him Boss or Captain. Resolved, he became willing to follow Subaru anywhere, even to the dangerous battleground that held both the Bowel Hunter and numerous strong witchbeasts.

A year later, while Garfiel still refers to Subaru with that title, the two have a brotherly relationship, both often messing around with Otto. In Priestella, when he Mimi was injured, the first person he searched for was Subaru, believing he would know what to do. Soon after, when the two were separated following the flood that consumed the area around City Hall, he would become desperate to find him, running around the town in search for him. When he found Al, he was even disappointed that he confused the smell of the two.

When it came time for someone to speak to the people of Priestella, it would be Garfiel to nominate Subaru for the job, believing him to be the most viable option. When Al told everyone, including Garfiel, off about Subaru being unable to do this, Garfiel would be angered that Subaru was being made light of. However, when he was told that calling Subaru Boss didn’t make him someone special and only put pressure on him, Garfiel would feel guilty, though Subaru would reassure him that it was fine to keep referring to him as he did, giving him relief. Afterward, he would follow Subaru’s orders, trusting his judgment to take on Kurgan.

In Arc 7, he would go along with the majority of the camp to smuggle into Vollachia and retrieve Subaru. Throughout the arc, he felt frustrated that he wasn’t with the others and able to help Subaru. He would eventually reunite with Subaru in Arc 8, where Garfiel would feel great relief. Later, during the Great Disaster, Subaru’s trust in Garfiel would be felt at its greatest when he decided that Garfiel would be responsible for defeating a dragon. Naturally, Garfiel felt elated to be able to duke it out with a dragon, and he was very grateful to him to be given such a monumental task. When he fought her, seeing how she was similar to him in the Sanctuary, he decided to take on the role that Subaru taken on for him, as he thought it would be a major turning point for her life as it was for his.

Ryuzu(s)

In Arc 4, Subaru and the Ryuzus all seemed to get along. When concerning matters about Garfiel, the ones with strong self-awareness - Alma, Bilma, Shima, and Delma - they would inform him of what happened in the past, and they would trust him with their concerns for the boy, even trusting him to help set Garfiel straight. Though, Shima was at first a little wary since she could sense the Witch’s scent on him.

After the events of Arc 4, they, along with Garfiel, would end up giving names, different colored ribbons, and differing hairstyles to the Ryuzus without much self-awareness in order to help them grasp a better sense of their own identity. In particular, the clone known as Pico seemed to be particularly attached to Subaru throughout Arc 4.

Clind

Between Arcs 4 & 5, Clind was in charge of training Subaru with a whip, in parkour, and instilling survival knowledge in him. Subaru would be grateful to him since those skills came in handy, particularly in Priestella and the Buddheim Jungle. When they met again in Arc 9, Clind showed relief to see Subaru safe, and Subaru thanked him for doing so much to help the others retrieve him.

Meili Portroute

After Elsa Granhiert's death, Meili was captured and was locked up under new Roswaal Manor. Since she hadn’t killed anyone in this main timeline, Subaru forgave her and would often make stuffed animals to give to her. In the beginning of Arc 6, he offered her a stuffed panda in an attempt to ask her for her assistance in heading towards the Pleiades Watchtower, which she would provide.

In the tower itself, she would be conflicted with her own feelings, being so close to the one responsible for the death of Elsa. This would drive her to attempt to kill Subaru on two separate occasions: once in the Taygeta Library (which she never got a chance to do) and once on the steps of the tower. In fact, she did manage to kill him in two failed loops.

In one of the failed loops, he would read Meili’s Book of the Dead, where he would learn her history and begin to hallucinate her image and voice. Because of this, he came to a better understanding of how she become the assassin she was. This would lead to him stopping her attempted killing of the boy, and he would offer her a second chance, deciding to teach her right from wrong, that which she did not learn while growing up. As such, she would officially join the Emilia Camp.

The two seem to be perfectly compatible in combat as well, Subaru using the Witch’s Scent to attract witchbeasts, and Meili using her Divine Protection to control them. They would display this teamwork outside the Watchtower, where they would draw Shaula’s attention with the army of attacking witchbeasts. During this scuffle, Subaru would ask Meili to become his daughter, which caused her to become flustered and make him focus on the current struggle. Ultimately, he would save her life in this fight.

When Subaru was flung to Vollachia, she was tasked with leading others to the tower. While she doing this, she thought fondly of Subaru, causing her to give greater focus to the task at hand. Upon meeting him again, she was happy to see him.

Felt Camp

Felt

Subaru met Felt in the first loop when some thugs assaulted him but Felt didn't help. Later on, she was about to get killed by an assassin but got saved by Subaru. From there, they both established a friendship. Sometime later, when they met again in the Royal Capital, Felt showed that she was still making fun of him. As their friendship deepened, she respectively refers to Subaru and Emilia as big brother and big sister.

Reinhard van Astrea

Upon first meeting Reinhard, Subaru immediately recognized him as someone who has been chosen by God himself. Originally jealous of his gallantry and manliness, Subaru did not waste much time and started his soon-to-be-necessary relationship with him on a good note. As it later turned out, Reinhard's presence was vital in overcoming the Loot House incident and defeating Elsa while saving Emilia's life and returning her stolen Insignia. Naturally, seeing his strength left Subaru astounded, considering him to be quite a monster.

They would meet again in Arc 3, though due to Subaru’s outburst against the knights and his bitterness, he even lashed out at him, causing their relationship to seem on questionable terms. However, when they met again in Arc 5, it seemed that there was no damage done to their relationship, as Reinhard took no time at all to consider Subaru his friend, leaving him relieved. He even promised to discuss the fight against the White Whale with him, realizing that it was something that was heavily important due to his family situation.

Not long after, the Siege of Priestella began, and even though he managed to summon Reinhard during his third and final failed loop of the arc, Subaru was left baffled and worried about Reinhard’s absence for the first half of the siege. That said, when Reinhard finally made his appearance, Subaru was the one to break the ice for him and allowed everyone to bring their grievances to him. Afterward, Reinhard decided to follow Subaru’s orders when it came time to retrieve Priestella from the Witch Cult, and the two fought against the Sin Archbishop of Greed. Over the course of the battle, he was left completely stunned by Reinhard’s sheer absurdity of strength and even stated he was a monster out loud, with the man’s feat of literally kicking off of the moon being at the peak of Subaru’s awe.

With the fight over, Subaru trusted Reinhard to watch his back when he went to confront “Anastasia.” After getting the answers he wanted, he asked Reinhard to keep the contents of their conversation secret, to which Reinhard decided to act as if he’d heard nothing. With Subaru prepared to go to the Pleiades Watchtower, Reinhard prayed for his safety, as not even the Sword Saint himself succeeded in making it there.

Rom

Subaru and Rom are on mutually friendly terms with one another. Although he thinks that the old man is somewhat like a villain, Subaru finds it hard to dislike Rom.

Ezzo Cadner

Though the two first officially met before the Royal Selection, when they met each other in Arc 9, the two showed respect for each other.

Ton, Chin, and Kan

Initially, this group of punks was among the first enemies that Subaru encountered shortly after his summoning into the world, with Camberley even killing him in one failed loop. He even stood in their way when they attempted to accost Priscilla. However, Subaru does not seem to bear a grudge against any of them, and he was rather surprised to see them join Felt’s camp. In particular, he has no issue speaking with Rachins, despite the man’s aggressive and vulgar attitude towards him.

Crusch Camp

Crusch Karsten

Subaru has fostered a good alliance with Crusch after the success of killing the White Whale, with Crusch even giving most of the credit of the victory to him. After her memories were eaten by Lye Batenkaitos, their relationship became somewhat neutral, but leaned toward friendly.

In Arc 5, the two would meet again on friendly terms. Not long after, however, the Witch Cult attacked Priestella, forcing the Royal candidates to fight back. Deciding to ignore his injury, Subaru would join the task force to retake City Hall, where he and Crusch would fight sight by side. The two would repetitively save each other and fight as equals, Crusch jumping to push Subaru out of the way from Lust’s flames, and Subaru using the remnants of his fading consciousness to tie her to the foot of the transformed Garek Thompson, who had attempted to save them, to keep her from falling.

Back at City Hall, when Crusch would request to see him, he would end up feeling terrible about not being able to prevent her from contracting the curse from Lust. Similarly, he would be ashamed of himself for wanting her to blame him, when in reality, she was worried for his safety. Shortly after, though, he would discover that he could transfer the curse from her to himself, albeit painfully and at an unfair rate. He would be fully prepared to take the curse from her, but she pleaded with him not to, believing that the people needed him more than herself, and asking him to tell her to “leave everything to me”, to which he did, albeit hesitantly. Subaru is still resolved to take in the curse in the future if there is no other alternative.

Ferris

Although Subaru did not particularly see Ferris in a negative light, due in part to his prior meeting with Subaru, his outburst during the Royal Selection’s start, and Ferris’s own hatred towards being weak, Ferris did not like him all that much. In fact, when Julius “helped” Subaru via their bout, Ferris questioned why he went so far. Later, however, when Subaru came to negotiate with Crusch for her assistance, his view of him improved, and a short time later, he would even compare Subaru to his late friend. In fact, this view would improve even more as they fought alongside each other against the White Whale and Sloth. During one failed loop, Ferris even cried that he was forced to use his power to help end Subaru’s life.

Approximately one year later, their friendship would remain intact. However, thanks to the attack on Priestella and Crusch being cursed by Lust, Ferris would lash out in anger, not even Subaru escaping his scornful voice. Of course, due to the circumstances, this would not affect their relationship.

Shortly thereafter, when Subaru discovered that he could remove Crusch’s curse by transferring it into his own body, Ferris was conflicted with Crusch not allowing him to take the rest into his body. After she finally fell asleep, Ferris would turn to Subaru to ask what he should do, to which Subaru had to remind him of his duties, in spite of what they both really want.

Wilhelm van Astrea

Subaru views and respects Wilhelm as the very ideal of a man. When Subaru helped the Sword Demon avenge his wife, Theresia van Astrea, by participating in the subjugation of the White Whale, Wilhelm gained respect for Subaru, and in turn, he helped Subaru defeat the Sin Archbishop of Sloth. Subaru was considerate enough towards Wilhelm by attempting to heal his relationship with Reinhard and letting him confront his wife after discovering that she was a revived corpse soldier in Priestella.

Anastasia Camp

Anastasia Hoshin

Subaru and Anastasia's relationship is somewhat complicated. In one loop where Subaru accidentally told information about Crusch's Camp she abandoned him after revealing that she was actually using him. Despite this, Subaru still saw her as a key potential ally alongside Crusch during the campaign to subjugate the White Whale.

A year later, he would work alongside Anastasia, acting as a general of sorts in the resistance of the Witch Cult. The two would recognize each other’s leading skills and trust each other’s judgment. Following Subaru’s speech to the people of Priestella, Anastasia would even find herself invigorated by his words. Thanks to these interactions, Subaru would be one of only a few people to recognize that “Anastasia” was not Anastasia towards the end of the arc.

At the end of the following arc, when Subaru suggested killing Roy Alphard in his grief, Anastasia would be the one to dissuade him since they did not know if that would reverse his Authority’s effects. That said, she claimed that she also didn’t want to see Subaru dirty his hands like so many in this world have, and she even stated that she liked him better the way he was.

After Subaru was sent flying to Vollachia, Anastasia would resolve herself to travel through two countries to retrieve him, even hiring the “Admirer” in the process. When they reunited, due to the circumstances, she would place her faith in Subaru’s judgment once again and ask Halibel to listen to him as much as possible.

Julius Juukulius

Julius and Subaru's relationship started out on the wrong foot; mostly because Julius's noble mannerisms caused him to come over as haughty from Subaru's 21st-century perspective. Still, it didn't turn truly antagonistic until Subaru offended the whole Royal Knight garrison, prompting him to publicly humiliate him in a mock duel. However, in a way, Julius was actually protecting Subaru here, as most of the Royal Guard outright called for his execution before this.

Despite their bad start, their relationship got better following the battle with the White Whale, after they both apologized and Julius even admitted he may have acted rashly. The two then proceeded to work together to defeat Petelgeuse. However, both still voiced their dislike for each other afterward.

After having his name eaten, Subaru is now the only one who can remember Julius. During their trip to the Pleiades Watchtower, in search of a way to restore Gluttony's victims, their relationship has gotten somewhat better, and eventually, they both became proper friends with mutual respect for each other.

Alongside Anastasia, he would cross two countries to help recover Subaru from Vollachia. Upon arriving, he would be shocked at Subaru’s infantilized state, yet not quite surprised that he had been put in yet another precarious position. Still, this hasn’t changed the knight’s trust in him. Not long after they’d reunite, they would engage in conversation where Subaru would indeed call Julius his friend. Immediately after, Subaru would suddenly kick into action, with Julius not at all questioning him and proceeding to listen to Subaru’s orders.

When talking over how to handle Spica, it would be Julius who would lead Subaru towards offering his hand to Spica, since his views actually align rather well with Subaru’s. Later, when Subaru would return to Lupugana, Julius would pray for Subaru’s safety and would trust in his ability to end the conflict.

It should be noted that in a 2024 Q&A, the author claimed that the friendship level between the two in Priestella was around 5/10. By Vollachia, this has increased to about 6/10.

Ricardo Welkin

Subaru first thought of Ricardo as a very annoying guy. Throughout the battle with the White Whale, Subaru realized that Ricardo was looking out for him. During the fight against the White Whale, Ricardo saved Subaru by taking the hit and sustaining major injuries in the process. In exchange, he gave Subaru a message which in turn helped Subaru realize the trick behind the White Whale’s multiplying ability that allowed Subaru and Crusch to create a plan and defeat the giant witchbeasts.

Eridna

They first officially met when Subaru confronted “Anastasia” at the end of Arc 5, and when he heard the artificial spirit claim the name Echidna, he was instantly hostile to her, to her surprise. After getting across that she was different from the Echidna he knew, he would at least listen to what she had to say, though due to her demeanor being an exact match for her creator, he couldn’t trust her in the slightest. Ultimately, the two decided to work together during the expedition towards the Pleiades Watchtower.

Shortly after entering the tower, Subaru and Eridna would talk to each other on the balcony, where Eridna would ask him who he was, having been unable to find out when Anastasia looked into his background. Subaru would notice her clenching tightly to her clothes, indicating fear of him, which had only intensified over the course of the last two arcs.

However, close to the conclusion of Arc 6, it seems that his relationship with Eridna has somewhat improved, though the extent of that improvement is unknown.

Priscilla Camp

Priscilla Barielle

When Subaru met her in Arc 3, her arrogant demeanor and attitude left him with a negative impression of her, and it only got worse upon seeing her apparent discrimination towards Emilia. This impression gets worse yet again when she later kicks him in the jaw for acting without pride in a failed loop.

In Arc 5, her appearance shocked Subaru, leaving him to question why she was there and had to ruin the repair of Wilhelm’s and Reinhard’s reunion. However, when she claimed not to recognize him, he was left annoyed with her. That said, hearing her conversation with Liliana later left him somewhat impressed. Later, Priscilla saved his life from drowning, leaving him grateful yet annoyed with her attitude. Shortly after, he was shocked to see her actions in cutting his leg and neck, but because of her actions, they determined that he was not truly harmed.

When it came time to take back Priestella from the Witch Cult, though Priscilla was the one to decide to take on Wrath, Subaru fully trusted her to do so, though he was still worried that she about her. When Priscilla stated that he should have no reason to considering her death might be advantageous for him and his camp, Subaru told her not to make assumptions, leaving her shocked and silenced by his statement.

In Arc 7, Subaru was shocked to see Priscilla again in Vollachia, and again when he learned that she was the emperor’s sister. He was also rather shocked that she had no real reaction to his appearance at the time.

In Arc 8, he was worried about her since they were forced to leave her behind in the zombie-infested Lupugana. When the two reunited, though Priscilla teased him about his size, when she called Subaru by his actual name, he was completely shocked by it, as if he’d been rewarded for his worry. After the end of the Great Disaster, Priscilla spent an entire day by Subaru’s side in Garkla. Having had him sing a song, she danced to it and complimented him for it. Soon after, as she started to fade away, Subaru nearly tried to use his Return by Death in order to save her. However, she stopped him, revealing that she was aware of his Authority and saying that some people did not want their fates to change, such as herself. That said, she praised everything he had done, and she called him a true knight. After she faded away, Subaru was saddened and left on his knees.

Al

As Al works under Priscilla as a servant, Subaru's relationship with him is complex. He views Al as a senior with more experience in the new world he finds himself in, yet Subaru is unable to immediately trust him due to his affiliation with Priscilla.

In Arc 5, Al would be the one to back up Subaru when the group was discussing who should give the speech to calm Priestella and raise its morale, reminding them that Subaru was not some Superman that could handle every burden that came his way. Ironically, it would be Al’s words that inspire Subaru to give the speech, though Al warned him of what that meant.

In Arc 7, it would be Al who would encourage a dejected Subaru, telling him to earn the words that were revoked from him back. Deciding to assist him with this, he would follow Subaru to Chaosflame. During their travels, Subaru would come to trust Al much more than before. Later in the following arc, he used Al’s own words to inspire him to overcome the impending disaster.

After Priscilla’s death, he wanted to help Al as best as he could, and so he decided to bring him to the Pleiades Watchtower as per his request to read her Book of the Dead. Despite this, shortly after arriving, Al trapped him within Ol Shamak, and he declared that he would not fight on Subaru’s battlefield. He would act on the original purpose that he was given that he had once abandoned: removing Subaru from the world.

Heinkel Astrea

Despite how the two have only met once, Subaru immediately thought that Heinkel was an unpleasant man who embodied the very face of malice itself. After hearing about his history from Julius and discovering how he held Felt captive in an attempt to guarantee his own safety, Subaru's feelings about Heinkel's personality were further diminished. Regardless, he still had no issue in requesting his assistance when the need arose.

Royal Army

Theresia van Astrea

Though he never had a chance to meet her when she was alive, Subaru was disheartened to hear that her body was being used by the Witch Cult, and he entrusted her to Wilhelm to take care of. When he noticed her remains by Wilhelm’s side at the end of Arc 5, he said that he believed that she deserved a proper burial, and he even asked Wilhelm if he could visit her grave once it was set up.

Lugunicans

Liliana Masquerade

The two first meet between Arcs 2 and 3, where she would sing famed stories to those residing in Roswaal Manor. After resolving the events at the time, she decided she would come to hear of his tale once he became a hero. Later, the two would meet again in Priestella, and they would be happy to see each other again. Having since heard of him becoming a hero who led the charge against the White Whale and Sloth after allying with two different camps, she wanted to hear his story. However, he felt it was too early to tell her, as he felt his journey was not over, and he decided it would be better for her to hear after that, which she excitedly took to heart as a promise.

Though it was a misguided attempt, she was willing to help Subaru get what they needed from Kiritaka. Later, Subaru would worry for her well-being, especially so when she would tag along with Priscilla to fight Wrath.

Imperial Family

Vincent Abellux

When the two first met, Vincent was suspicious of him and held him at the edge of a blade. After Subaru would give his name, Vincent would hand him a dagger, intending to use him to throw the imperial army off of his trail. When Subaru took his leave afterward, Vincent would remark on his name, having recognized it from his feats in Lugunica. However, he would disregard this shortly after.

When the two would meet again, Vincent would look down on him and actively insult him, whereas Subaru would find his demeanor irritating and similar to Priscilla. However, the two would put their differences aside and fight together against an Elgina, where they would make allies with the People of Shudrak.

However, due to his reappearing in the village, his impressive display and tactics during the fight, Subaru’s arm regenerating, and him keeping Rem, who can use Healing Magic, by his side, he would come to believe that Subaru was a Stargazer from Lugunica. Because of this and Subaru’s heroic points of view yet whimsical judgments, Vincent would come to despise him like other Stargazers, if not worse, yet trust in his judgment. A major example of this was displayed in Chaosflame, where Subaru would point out Olbart’s ambitions and the ambush waiting outside.

Regarding the events in Chaosflame, he would learn that Subaru was in the center of the shadow, and he would find it curious, just as he was with when he learned that Subaru was keeping a Sin Archbishop by his side, though he would quickly put it out of his mind. After the event subsided, Vincent believed that Subaru survived the ordeal, believing it too early for his role to end yet.

The two would reunite later on the coupled dragon carriage, where Vincent was still reeling from the loss of Chisha. Here, he would reveal his disgust for both Subaru’s nature and his own belief of him being a Stargazer, and he would question him about why he chose to save himself over Chisha. However, the two would end up in a scuffle, where Subaru would dispel Vincent’s misunderstanding and push him to fight against fate. Because of this, the two would come to understand each other better, albeit their outward interactions have remained mostly the same.

Vincent has regarded Subaru as one of his core strategists in the fight against the Great Disaster. Later, the two spoke with each other regarding his sister’s death, where each handled their grief in different ways. With his leave from Vollachia, he entrusted Spica’s care to him, albeit Vincent had been the one to persuade her to temporarily remain in Vollachia, leaving Subaru annoyed.

Medium O'Connell

Like her brother, Subaru would meet the excessively optimistic Medium when she and her brother helped them into Guaral, and like Flop, she would also escape with Subaru. Later, the two would travel to Chaosflame together. Being entrusted with this task by her brother, Medium gave her all to help Subaru and Vincent. Like with her brother, the two harbor a great respect for each other, Medium even going out of her way to help comfort a distressed Subaru in their infantilized states.

On their way to face the Great Disaster, Medium thanked Subaru for meeting her and her brother in Guaral, believing that thanks to that, she wouldn’t have met all the kind people she had, nor would she be given this chance to speak with an old friend. Likewise, Subaru felt the same, believing that she was a great help to him, just like he was to her.

Nine Divine Generals

Cecilus Segmunt

Subaru would first meet the infantilized Blue Lightning in Ginunhive. Their relationship was rather strange, as Subaru was often left dumbfounded and exasperated with Cecilus’s point of view and actions. However, he would recognize his strength as unbelievably dangerous. Meanwhile, Cecilus sees something special in Subaru, even going out of his way to pull him and Tanza from the waters that surrounded the island and stake his life on his bet with Gustav. When Subaru would restart from zero at Ginunhive, he would better understand how to deal with Cecilus, and he would save requesting his assistance for last, simply to get on his nerves.

Cecilus often uses words from Subaru’s home world, having grown fond of and enjoying the words. In fact, he would ultimately end up referring to Subaru as “Boss,” respecting his leadership of the Pleiades Batallion. He also seems to notice something strange about Subaru, referring to what he has as “true sight.” The two would make a promise under the moonlight to not use their respective strengths to save each other, but both of them knew that they would readily break that promise if the other party was in danger of dying.

When he was forced to leave Spica in Cecilus’s care, he was worried the being by his side would be bad for education, and he made sure to remind Cecilus to be careful around her before he left Vollachia.

Olbart Dunkelkenn

Subaru does not like the old man, but he is fully aware of his strength. In fact, it would be because of Olbart that Subaru would experience the “ten seconds of despair,” causing him to hold a grudge against him. It is unknown how Olbart felt about him following the false “Great Disaster” in Chaosflame.

When they were forced to work together to push back the Great Disaster, Subaru tasked Olbart alone with invading the restructured Imperial Palace. Upon entering and realizing the drastic changes, he believed Subaru to have already foreseen this turn of events, leading Olbart to believe his foresight useful yet dangerous for the future.

Yorna Mishigure

Initially, Subaru did not have a very good impression of the woman, comparing her to Priscilla. However, he would come to respect her after meeting in his infantilized state, recognizing her as a kind woman who cared for children and the residents of her home. He would even feel gratitude towards her for the numerous times that she tried to save him over the “ten seconds of despair.” When he would be forced to retreat from Lupugana, he would be worried for her safety when he learned she was left behind. Fortunately, they met again in Lupugana, and after the Great Disaster’s end, she met him again in his grown body. Despite seeing him like this for the first time, they still remained friendly. As he left, Yorna told him that he would always be welcome to visit her again.

Imperial Army

Zikr Osman

Though the two met while Subaru was under the guise of Natsumi Schwartz, even after discovering he was male, Zikr treated him with respect and referred to his by the name Natsumi. When Subaru vanished following the events in Chaosflame, Zikr was worried for him.

Jamal Aurélie

Jamal was one of the first people that Subaru met in Vollachia, and they were immediately antagonistic to each other. Like Todd, Jamal thought of him as a dangerous enemy, only being backed by the falls of the Buddheim military camp and Guaral.

They would meet again later, though Jamal probably does not recognize Subaru as the same person due to the infantilization. Despite his mouth, he was grateful yet apologetic that Subaru was the one who had to give his sister the news about Todd’s supposed death. Later, the two would be forced to work side by side, albeit reluctantly, and when Jamal stated his intention to fall in battle to support his sister, Subaru was against this and told him he wouldn’t allow the soldier to die.

Todd Fang

Upon their first meeting in a previous loop, Todd and Subaru were on friendly terms. Subaru thought that Todd was a nice guy and thought well of him. However, that would quickly change in their subsequent meeting, where Todd would instantaneously lodge a knife into Subaru's shoulder upon believing that he was being manipulated. The two of them dislike each other, but only Subaru hates Todd while the the latter views the former as a target who must be killed due to his own internal and excessive fear. After encountering Todd on numerous occasions, Subaru firmly believes that he is scum comparable enough to the Sin Archbishops.[1]

Vollachians

Mizelda Shudrak

Their initial meeting was not the greatest, Subaru having been placed in a cell for trespassing in their territory alongside Vincent. However, he would garner great respect from the woman during the Lifeblood Ritual, becoming a warrior in her eyes. Naturally, believing that this fight would be his last, she and the other Shudrakians would go to save Rem for him. That said, having survived, her respect stayed, and she was willing to help him like Vincent as if he was one of their own.

Taritta Shudrak

In the beginning, Taritta was conflicted with Subaru, having been given a prophecy by her late friend, Mariuli, which would lead her to attempt to kill Subaru. Subaru is currently unaware of Taritta being “the Hunter” who shot him during his first failed loop in Vollachia. However, whether this would affect his views of her is unknown.

Later, however, Subaru and Taritta got along fairly well. After he completed the Lifeblood Ritual, she would come to respect him like her sister would and consider him as one of their own. Later, on the way to Chaosflame, she would reveal to him her insecurities towards being entrusted with the title of Chieftain, even claiming some envy towards Subaru’s boldness when posing as “Natsumi Schwartz.” Wanting advice from him, Subaru would tell her that it’s fine to run away if she wanted to, comparing his own insecurities to her own. He claimed it would be selfish if he told her to be strong and accept it, and that it would be telling her to numb her feelings, which he felt would be wrong. Ultimately, though, she would end up not running, and she would be thankful towards him.

During the events of Chaosflame, she would be shocked to learn that the false Great Disaster was coming out of Subaru. She would be extremely concerned for him throughout the incident, and she would remain just as concerned when he went missing after the incident was quelled. Though he would reappear during the Battle for the Imperial Capital, the two have yet to meet again, so her feelings about him and his return are unknown.

Flop O'Connell

Subaru would first meet the kind merchant in Guaral, where he would assist Subaru’s group in entering the city. Similarly, he would go out of his way to save Flop from the ruthless Todd, having witnessed him give his life so that Subaru could escape. Ultimately, Flop would join Subaru in the retreat from Guaral, and he would even help him with the Bloodless Siege that followed. Ultimately, the two harbor a great respect for each other.

When the two met again after the Great Disaster, they thanked each other for the time they spent together. Flop said that if he came back to Vollachia to seek him out, and if he were to go to the Kingdom, then he’d seek out Subaru.

Tanza

Subaru’s relationship with Tanza wouldn’t begin until Ginunhive, where the two were teleported following the conclusion of the events in Chaosflame. There, the two had aligning goals, forcing them to work together. Though Tanza would often find herself exasperated with his actions, she would come to gain a great respect for him. In the failure of Ginunhive, with Subaru’s authority seeming to malfunction, she would even cry as Subaru was dying in her arms.

Like Gustav, Tanza would act as Subaru’s advisor in the Battalion, and at times, like a battering ram, much to her annoyance. However, because Subaru trusts her with these tasks, she will let the slights slide. She also tends to worry about him, especially when he seems to ignore her feelings on certain matters. However, he does listen to her, and he will trust her with tasks that align with her wishes, such as confronting Yorna in the zombie-infested Lupugana.

As he was preparing to leave Vollachia, he said goodbye to Tanza, though she warned him not to treat it like the last time they would see each other, much to his confusion as she would not elaborate.

Gustav Morello

Subaru respects Gustav, who, with everything he was capable of, tried to maintain peace and order on Ginunhive, in deep contrast to how it apparently used to be. Not including Cecilus, Subaru would save convincing Gustav for last, believing him to be the hardest to convince. After challenging him to a “Sparka,” Gustav, who had rather complex views of Natsuki Schwartz, decided to become Subaru’s ally. In the Pleiades Battalion, he would act as Subaru’s advisor of sorts.

In his own words, he is still loyal to the Emperor, and thus, he does not recognize Schwartz as his master. However, he instead views him as a friend, and his actions in the Pleiades Battalion are those of a man assisting his friend.

Hiain, Weitz, and Idra

The members of Subaru’s unit started off completely uncooperative, but they would eventually come to harbor great respect for Subaru. This has gotten to the point where they have become essentially his lieutenants in the Pleiades Battalion. They will fight by Subaru’s side, come hell and high water, as seen when they each gave their lives to protect him during the failure of Ginunhive.

Kararagians

Halibel

These two are friendly with each other and respect each other. Having seen an example of Halibel’s strength on the coupled dragon carriage, he couldn’t help but be left amazed. When he was requested to assist Subaru in reclaiming Lupugana, Anastasia asked the wolf man to listen to Subaru as much as possible. He would listen to her, and when he realized why he was sent to handle Eugard Vollachia instead of the dragon, he recognized Subaru’s foresight.

Gustekans

Elsa Granhiert

Although he initially found Elsa bewitching, Subaru would quickly realize that she was his enemy, as she was responsible for his very first death as well of the deaths of both Old Man Rom and Felt, not to mention Emilia. After his second death, he would attempt to find a way to overcome her, and when he encountered her in the slums during the main timeline, his fear of her could be sensed, though she would end up leaving him alone. The two ended up fighting against each other in the Loot House, where he, alongside Emilia and the others would drive her away.

He would later encounter her in Arc 4, where she was tasked with killing the residents of the mansion. She ended up being responsible for two of his deaths as well as the loss of his eye in one loop. Eventually, however, he would manage to lead a more appropriate match for her via Garfiel. Despite this, following her apparent death, her animated body would chase after Subaru in the burning mansion, until he finally brought her down with a backdraft explosion.

Witches

Satella

Satella is the one who granted Subaru Return by Death and also stands behind his summoning to the new world. Originally, Subaru harboured intense hate and fear for the Witch but upon finally meeting her face to face in the Witches' Tea Party and coming to understand her intense emotions with the help of Carmilla's Authority of Lust, Subaru promised her that one day he'll find her and save her no matter what, despite Satella's initial request to kill her. In the prologue of the 9th volume, Subaru shows mutual and intense feelings for Satella which gradually turned into (and were described) as representing each of the seven deadly sins, starting from sloth and ending with jealousy.

As already mentioned, The Witch of Envy stands behind Subaru's Return by Death. Whenever Subaru breaks "their promise", Satella preforms some type of punishment, either by crushing his heart, or on an extremely rare occasion, crushing the heart of Emilia. In Arc 6, Satella repeatedly caused the destruction of the Pleiades Watchtower and killed everyone in it, as long as Rui Arneb was latched onto Subaru.

In Vollachia, when Subaru was infantilized, his connection with the Witch seemed to have been severed, leaving her upset and searching for him, apparently crying and asking “Where are you?” Temporarily, Satella would find him, causing shadows to overflow from his body. However, it seems that she wasn’t able to properly establish a connection again as Return by Death would continue to malfunction. In Ginunhive, Subaru would finally understand that his connection was severed when he stated the name of his authority to Todd and received no penalty. Desperate, he would call out for her, allowing her to find him and reconnect to him. For the first time, he would be relieved to feel her presence.

Echidna

Subaru first met Echidna when he was invited to her Tea Party in Arc 4, where she muttered that he was early. In their talk, she would reveal herself as the Witch of Greed and even inquire as to any knowledge he might want, going into a small spiel about the other witches. However, Subaru decided against asking her anything, leaving Echidna shocked and attempting to get him to ask something of her. Disappointed, she would end up making him an Apostle of Greed, and she would make it to where he didn’t remember her until their next meeting. Shortly after, she would give him the chance to take the first trial and talk to illusory versions of his parents. Even though he knew they were simply illusions, he was still grateful to the witch for allowing him to talk to them again.

After his failed third loop of the arc, suffering from the mind-shattering pain of being eaten alive by the Great Rabbit, Echidna would invite him back to her Tea Party, saving his mind with the calming effect of the Witch’s Graveyard. Here, he would reveal to her his authority, which he could finally speak of for the first time to anyone. Echidna, however, seemed to have already been aware, and she would allow Subaru to relieve himself of the stresses that came with having to suffer. She even decided to let him talk to other witches, though she was reluctant about it. Shortly after, Echidna would make it so that he would remember her when he left the place, and she would even assist him by giving him a way to kill himself when he ended up being taken in by the shadows of the possessed Emilia.

The next time they’d meet, however, would not be on good terms. Having sent Carmilla, the Witch of Lust, to save Subaru from the effects of the second trial by using Rem’s face and words, he would become angered by these antics. Soon after, she would strike him with a deal in which she gave him his guidance using Return by Death. On the verge of accepting, the other witches came in to stop her, and they would reveal to him her true intentions. Echidna was very intrigued by his authority, and she believed that it would allow her to experience numerous different experiences in various different ways. The negative side to a contract with her would be abusing the authority, and she had no issue with using Subaru similarly to a lab rat. It should also be stated that during their talks, he learned of the witch’s history with Beatrice. Hearing of the neglectful and cruel way she left her to guard the Forbidden Library simply to sate her own curiosity, his hatred of the witch grew. Because of all of this, Subaru came to realize her true nature and rejected her deal. Echidna didn’t seem to mind whichever choice he made, and it was even implied that she wanted him to say no. That said, she ended up revoking his appointment as an Apostle of Greed, making it so he couldn’t so freely enter her tomb.

Because of these actions, he holds an intense grudge toward Echidna, something that would even end up fogging his views of Eridna when they met, knowing that her name and mannerisms were a match for her creator’s.

At present, he is unaware the Echidna has taken on the form of Omega. On the other hand, during her travels, she often finds herself thinking of and comparing her predicaments with that of Subaru.

Typhon

Initially, Subaru saw her as just a child. However, his perspective of her quickly changed when she used her Authority in the Castle of Dreams to pull his arm off and tear him to pieces to judge whether he was a bad person. Naturally, he fears her like he does the other witches. That said, Typhon seems to be particularly fond of him, getting angry at the other witches when she saw that he was upset, even willing to challenge the others if necessary. Likewise, she was one of the witches who respected his decision when he broke down and bit his tongue off in the Castle of Dreams, going so far as to protect push away Minerva when she wouldn’t allow him to do so. Later, when he saw her history via her Book of the Dead, he was left shocked.

Minerva

When Minerva first appeared, she only did so to heal Subaru and promptly left. Later, however, when Subaru confronted the witches, Minerva was angry at Subaru for not trying to understand Satella’s feelings and going so far as to bite his tongue off. Naturally, she refused to allow him to run away like this, and she ended up healing him and telling him how disrespectful he was being to Satella. Naturally, Subaru fears her like he does the other witches.

Daphne

When they met, Subaru and Daphne discussed the existence of the witchbeasts, in particular the Three Greats. Upon hearing her reasoning being sating hunger and the concept of eat or be eaten, he couldn’t agree with her, and he made a bet with her to kill all of the Three Greats, having already succeeded in slaying the White Whale. She got excited at this bet and accepted it, wishing to see what he will do. It is for this reason that later, she uses her Centipede Coffin to hold down Typhon, as she wanted to see Subaru take on their bet to the end. Naturally, Subaru fears her like he does the other witches.

Carmilla

When Subaru was breaking down after experiencing the second trial, it was Carmilla, sent by Echidna, who helped him, using Rem’s image to do so. However, when she spoke in a way Rem never would, he got angry at her and nearly lost himself to her Faceless Bride. His anger caught her off guard and caused her to tear up. When Subaru confronted the witches, it was Carmilla who managed to get Subaru to somewhat understand Satella’s feelings for him, claiming that she doesn’t want to see such feeling being rejected so vehemently. Naturally, Subaru fears her like he does the rest of the witches.

Sekhmet

Despite having the fewest interactions of the bunch, Sekhmet was the one who acted as the intermediary between him and the witches to keep the peace. Although she had a few choice words for him during his argument with the witches, she still respected Subaru’s decision when he bit off his tongue, even going so far as to stop Minerva in her tracks when she tried to heal him. Her view of him compared to the rest is unknown. Naturally, Subaru fears her like he does the rest of the witches.

Sphinx

The two first encountered each other on the coupled dragon carriages, where he would stop “Valga Cromwell’s stratagem” from killing everyone on board. Sphinx would recognize Subaru as one of the largest threats to the Great Disaster after this.

Later, they would encounter each other again in Lupugana, Sphinx believing that the “foreign entity” may have been throwing off her plan. When they came face to face, Subaru would claim that he is her natural enemy, and Subaru’s group would engage in combat with her, ultimately winning after managing to outsmart her. After seeing her transformation as the Witch of Greed, Subaru was shocked to see that she had taken on Echidna’s form, but he quickly overcame this thanks to Roswaal and Beatrice and proceeded to stop Sphinx’s final stand. As the two confronted each other, Subaru asked her why she decided to commence the Great Disaster, and in the end, he wished her a happy birthday before having her name devoured by Spica.

Witch Cult

Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti

Petelgeuse and Subaru first crossed paths back in the early stages of Arc 3, during Subaru's 2nd failed loop. The Sin Archbishop ordered his followers to dispose of the earth dragon carrying Rem and Subaru and bring the boy to him, while killing the blue-haired maid. Upon waking up, Subaru was subjected to an unsettling scene of self-harming and madness, perpetrated by Sloth and his followers–a scene that would forever engrave itself in Subaru's mind. Soon after, Rem–mortally wounded but still alive–breached into the Witch Cult's hideout, however, Petelgeuse easily disposed of her with his Authority. The brutal action seeded deep roots of hate into Subaru's mind, and in the following loops, Subaru's hate for Petelgeuse would only continue to grow and escalate, due to witnessing the madman's campaign of terror through Arlam Village and Roswaal Manor, until, Petelgeuse became the person Subaru despised the most in the world, and was prepared to do anything in order to kill him. In the Arc's climax, Subaru would gather a subjugation force and tackle Sloth. It would, however, take two tries to defeat his body, but even utilising Julius' strength wasn't enough to defeat the Evil Spirit. It was only after a wild chase through the forest on a dragon carriage, that Subaru was able to defeat Petelgeuse by lighting him on fire and crushing him under the wheels of the carriage. Immediately following Petelgeuse's death, Subaru received the Witch Factor of Sloth.

During Subaru and Julius' fight with Petelgeuse, after Sloth possessed his body, Subaru felt he could understand and somewhat sympathize with the madman, though it didn't last for very long. In Arc 5, it is stated that Subaru felt absolutely no shred of remorse and hated his very existence from the moment the two first crossed paths a bit over a year before the events of Arc 5[2].

Furthermore, during the Subjugation against Greed in the latter half of Arc 5, Subaru deliberately referred to his Authority of Sloth as an Unseen Hand rather than Invisible Providence to crusch Regulus' pseudo-heart located inside Emilia's chest, likely in order to subconsciously prove Regulus wrong for berating Sloth's Authority for being too sluggish and weak – the very same Authority he considered to be miniscule in danger to him, proved to be his undoing.

Sirius Romanée-Conti

Subaru would first encounter the Sin Archbishop of Wrath at the very beginning of the Siege of Priestella. Having experienced her apologetic and grateful side while she was giving her speech, he at first believed her to be the closest one to normal when compared to the other Sin Archbishops. However, he would come to realize that she was just as demented as the others as she would proceed to kill him three times. That said, he would find her sudden attitude shift towards Emilia to be completely shocking, as even in spite of her dementedness, he had not seen her even remotely close to this in his previous loops.

Sirius does not seem to realize that Subaru is the one who ultimately ended her beloved Petelgeuse. In fact, after having witnessed his use of the Authority of Sloth, she would believe that the madman had continued existing in this brand new body, and she would shower him in her crazed love. Of course, Subaru would deny this, but it would still go in one ear and out the other.

Towards the end of the arc, Subaru would go to meet her in an attempt to glean any information he could out of her, which although minimal and not what he wanted to hear, he would pretty much succeed. Upon leaving, she would come to believe that Petelgeuse existed within Subaru, but he was overwhelmed by Subaru’s soul. As such, she would suggest to him to get rid of the three Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, and she would tell him to keep his body healthy for Sloth’s return.

Regulus Corneas

Subaru first met Regulus in Priestella when he bumped into Emilia. Finding the man rather creepy, Subaru stood in front of Emilia and acted as her knight to ward the man away, resulting in him temporarily leaving. Subaru remained nervous about the man, even though Garfiel reassured him that the man was not a warrior, and when he turned around, he saw the man watching his group off.

Later, his fears were made reality when the man turned out to be the Sin Archbishop of Greed. Though he saved Emilia’s life, after listening to his mad rant about his rights and when he decided to take her as his bride, Subaru became angered and attempted to retrieve Emilia from the man. Unfortunately, this resulted in his loss. Seeing his apparent invincibility and pure destructive force left him shocked. As Regulus retreated, he left Subaru with a mocking invite to the wedding, nearly severing Subaru’s leg at his thigh.

They would later confront each other at his failed wedding, where Subaru pitted an unstoppable force against the immovable object. Throughout the fight, Subaru taunted and insulted Greed, increasing his anger, and their respective hatred for each other increased dramatically, especially when he called Emilia perfect for being a virgin. Naturally, observing Regulus’s pure absurdity in combat against Reinhard left Subaru constantly shocked, but thanks to his own wit, Subaru managed to determine Regulus’s weakness and put an end to it. In Regulus’s final moments against Subaru, he tried to trick him into a duel, but instead, Subaru left him to die by Reinhard’s hand, and he took the Authority of Greed for himself.

Capella Emerada Lugunica

Subaru would first meet Lust at City Hall in Priestella during the first counterattack. Though shocked by her initial draconic appearance, he would be the one to keep her attention. When he and Crusch entered the building, they attack the dragon that they see, but they are ambushed by the little girl they saved, who turned out to be Lust herself. After having seen what she had done to the people who were taken hostage in City Hall, he was absolutely disgusted by her methods, and he would be even more disgusted by her thoughts on what love really was. Ultimately, while he would lose to her, she would curse both himself and Crusch with the cursed Dragon’s blood. Coming across the demi-beasts shortly after this, and even seeing the state that Crusch was left in, Subaru’s hatred for Lust rivaled that of the other Sin Archbishops.

Lye Batenkaitos

Even though Subaru didn't know Lye that well, he felt immense anger and hatred towards him for eating Rem's name and memories and placing her in the Sleeping Beauty state. Lye saw Subaru as his saviour as his Return by Death would allow him to experience tastes and memories like no other.

Roy Alphard

Subaru and Roy's relationship is quite one-sided, as unlike his two siblings, the latter has not opted to target Subaru. However, upon their meeting in Priestella, Subaru directed immense rage towards Roy while mistakenly believing that he was the culprit behind the plundering of Rem's name and memories. When he was later defeated by Julius and Subaru was still reeling from losing Shaula, he wanted to direct all of his pent up rage and sorrow by killing Roy, although he was convinced otherwise by Anastasia since he was still necessary for releasing the remaining names and memories.

Rui Arneb

Subaru first met Rui when he accidentally trespassed upon the Corridor of Memories. At first, he was curious about who she was and why she was there, but when he learned of her identity as one of the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, he immediately became hostile, and he would try to attack her while yelling at her to return everyone’s memories and names. Barely recognizing him from Rem’s memories, she would pay him little attention, swiftly pin him, and she would eat his name and memories as well.

However, when she saw that he was still awake and seemingly unaffected by her Authority, it shocked her greatly, and her surprise would expand further when she realized that he had memories of a world she was unaware of and the memories of death. Because of this, she accessed more of Rem’s memories about Subaru to learn more about him, and, combined with Rem’s emotions, her own emotions towards him would grow. She would even claim that he was the lost Sin Archbishop of Pride, seeming to agree with Petelgeuse’s statement from Subaru’s memories. Concocting a plan to plunder his existence for herself, she created a duplicate of herself by splitting her Witch Factor and attached one of her selves to Subaru, forcing out all of his memories he had spent in the new world up to that point and returning him to the mindset he had upon his summoning. The Rui who was attached to the amnesiac Subaru took control of his body at specific intervals to instill within him the belief that the original Subaru was still within him and harboured malicious intent to the people around him, going so far as to kill Meili in one loop to influence him. When the other Rui met Subaru within the Corridor of Memories, she exacted the final step of her plan of differentiating the amnesiac Subaru's identity from the original Subaru's, but it was cut short by him having a chance meeting with Rem.

As part of her plan, she would send her brothers after him to murder everyone in the tower while he was absent, along with an army of witchbeasts. She would even share Subaru’s memories with both of her brothers, as implied by Lye’s referencing of video games and Reid’s apparent disgust after taking over Roy’s body. When her original plan failed, she revealed to Subaru that her brothers were on their way to the Pleiades Watchtower.

However, when Subaru managed to regain his memories, that clone of Rui would be forced out of his body, and she would writhe and be left in crippling fear of him, calling him a monster and not understanding how he could overcome the experiences of death. Because of her deeds, he deemed her as unforgivable and refused to extend his hand for her, causing her fear to intensify and make her banish him from the Corridor of Memories. This said, both this version of her and the version that wished for Subaru’s body still existed. What happened during their clash remains unknown.

Others

Shaula

Initially, Shaula did not give any special attention to Subaru, attempting to snipe him and the other members of the Pleiades Watchtower expedition team as per her master’s orders (succeeding in two loops). However, after Subaru inadvertently broke the barrier that sent him and a few of his comrades beneath the sand, Shaula ceased her attack and immediately went to greet him, suspecting him to be her master.

After he woke up from being saved, he immediately met Shaula who, despite appearing intimidating at first, instantly pounced on him and would not let go. Claiming Subaru to be her master thanks to her sense of smell, she was willing to follow all of his orders. Of course, Subaru had no clue what she was talking about and stated multiple times to her that he was not her master.

During the stay at the watchtower, Subaru grew close to Shaula and wished to take her out of the tower. However, after one of the rules of the tower was broken, she was forced into her Crimson Scorpion form and began attempting to kill him. Unfortunately, following her defeat, she was left in the state of a tiny scorpion without a proper mind of her own, leaving Subaru heartbroken.

Flugel

Subaru thinks negatively of Flugel for various reasons. Creating the Taygeta Trial by using knowledge only otherworlders could know (and a limited few of those at that), making Shaula guard the Pleiades Watchtower by herself for 400 years, hearing about the way he behaved from Shaula, and even forcing Shaula to transform against her will should someone break the rules of the tower. Among other reasons, his revealed transgressions in Arc 6 caused Subaru not to think highly of him, and he even wanted to strike the Sage. As of now, he believes that Flugel is the master of the Corridor of Memories, though this suspicion is unconfirmed.

Reid Astrea

Subaru met the first Sword Saint during the second trial of the Pleiades Watchtower, when the man’s soul was used as the proctor for the trial. Listening to the man’s consistent insulting and horrible attitude left Subaru with a negative impression of Reinhard’s ancestor. However, seeing him in combat, Subaru recognized him as an incredibly powerful combatant that he wasn’t sure anybody could defeat. Likewise, Reid didn’t think much of Subaru, often calling him “young fish.” That said, upon taking over the body of Roy Alphard and seeing the memories of Subaru that were shared with him, he felt disgusted by Subaru and wondered how he hadn’t gone insane. Unknown to the man, he was responsible for several of Subaru’s deaths in the Pleiades Watchtower.

Volcanica

Though Subaru didn’t get a chance to see Volcanica during the initial expedition, when he returned, he was left awed by the Dragon’s presence.

Spica

Though the events of what happened to Rui in the Corridor of Memories remains unknown, shortly after that, Spica manifested in front of Subaru, and she alongside Rem were teleported to Vollachia together. Due to his connection with Rui, he and Spica got off to a bad start, Spica bearing the same appearance and Authority to the girl he knew. However, the personality she bore was vastly different to what he knew, causing him to be wary and afraid of her and her true intentions.

Over the course of Arc 7, Spica would continuously try to stick by Subaru’s side, attempting to protect him from harm from numerous characters, such as Rem, Todd, and the citizens of Chaosflame. However, the greatest example of her desire to protect Subaru came when she died protecting Subaru over and over again to Olbart Dunkelkenn. Because of this, not to mention seeing her bleed for him before this, Subaru’s views of her greatly changed.

Though they are separated for a while after this, when the two reunite, Subaru is glad to see that she is okay. During the retreat from Lupugana to Garkla, he finally confronted Spica about their relationship. Though he claimed he couldn’t forgive her actions, he still offered her his hand to start anew as an entirely different person to Rui Arneb, choosing to stick by her side if she wished to do so to prove to the world that she has changed. With their talks concluded, Subaru gave her a new name - Spica - so as to mark the start of her new life.

As Subaru’s group were preparing to return home, it was decided that Spica would remain behind to assist the Vollachians remove the remaining undead from the country in order to keep improving her name. Though he understood the reasoning behind it, he was reluctant to leave her behind, and walked with her hand in hand alongside Rem. Afterward, he entrusted her to Cecilus’s care.
