Lynek

Lynek (リネック) was the teacher of Iris. A mole person who once obeyed Eugard Vollachia after he and the pack of demi-humans he belonged to were forced into servitude, he was attributed as having “assisted” Volcas in the murder of Iris, leading the emperor to decree the execution of all wolf people and mole people. To avoid his murder as a result of Eugard's decree, he spent the rest of his life in exile on the Gladiator Island Ginunhive.

Appearance

Lynek was a mole person who had round eyes and a large nose that took up half of his face.

Personality

Lynek was a knowledgeable man with the skill to act as a tutor and a healer. Greatly considerate of people and their feelings, he regularly made an effort to acknowledge and accommodate them. He downplayed his own expertise and skills, emphasizing that, with his knowledge, other people could easily fulfill his roles. Despite recognizing himself as Iris's enemy, Lynek treated her with the utmost sincerity, feeling gratitude and profound regret towards her as a result of her forgiveness of his and his pack's actions. Over time, he grew concerned for her wellbeing and began to prioritize her and Eugard's happiness over his own pack, going so far as to ask for Iris's forgiveness when he perceived himself as the cause of their rift and to brew what was effectively a poison that would slowly kill her because she wished for it.

History

Lynek was one of the members of the “pack” led by Volcas. He was among the bandits who attacked a village within the Elcanti Domain in a retaliatory attack to avenge their comrades that had been slain by the domain's forces. Given the role of directly managing their food supply and stolen goods, he never laid hands on any of the villagers. Rather than facing execution, Iris forgave the pack members and implored Eugard to spare their lives, which he accepted. As a consequence of their defeat, Lynek and the others were bound by Collars of Submission and conscripted into a disciplinary unit obligated to serve the Elcanti Domain. On top of having the position of a healer in the disciplinary unit, Lynek was given the additional role of acting as Iris's teacher, frequently spending his time with her. He educated her in subjects such as proper etiquette. Volcas often abruptly disturbed the two, chiming in by bantering with Iris. After Terriola Goldario joined their faction, he observed the two women developing a positive relationship with one another.

As the Imperial Selection Ceremony began, Iris was afflicted with a fever, leaving Lynek to temporarily act as her nurse while the others he delegated his healing knowledge to took his place in the disciplinary unit. He was ordered by Eugard to contact him with any updates about Iris's status, no matter how trivial. Although he offered her the opportunity to speak with Eugard over a Conversation Mirror, she refused because of how they had contributed to his isolation. They were paid a visit by Whitaker Goldario, who had brought valuable medicinal herbs as a gift for Iris, entrusting their use to Lynek. At Whitaker's request, Lynek exited the room, and Iris was given an explanation of the Battle Craze Syndrome she had contracted and that the herbs would be used to cure her.

Lynek boiled the herbs to brew the medicine that would cure Iris. Upon being cured, Lynek cried tears of relief, and Iris set her sights on reuniting with Eugard. Unbeknownst to them, the Battle Craze Syndrome had been what prevented Iris from falling victim to Eugard's Curse of Thorns, and she was assaulted by the binding of thorns upon their reunion. Lynek blamed himself for Iris's newfound inability to approach Eugard, earnestly apologizing to her. Some time later, while Volcas and Iris were speaking, Lynek bore news to her, revealing that Whitaker Goldario had launched a rebellion in tandem with the Nine Divine Generals against Eugard, intending to murder him by setting fire to the Imperial Residence in the Imperial Capital.

To return to Eugard's side and encourage him to take arms against Whitaker, who planned to install himself on the throne once the King of Thorns was killed, Iris requested Lynek to use the herbs he had been gifted to create a medicine that would simulate the effects of Battle Craze Syndrome, which he reluctantly accepted after Volcas demanded an explanation from her. With Iris's encouragement, Eugard swiftly extinguished the lives of the Nine Divine Generals and Whitaker, putting a stop to the revolt, and his coronation proceeded as planned, being crowned as emperor by his beloved. Having been within the range of the Curse of Thorns for an extended period of time, Iris began to cough up blood when she returned to her quarters. Lynek warned her that she was pushing herself too hard, feeling guilty for creating a poison that was whittling down her life. Volcas, who was with the two, told Iris he was siding with her above all else, rather than with the Vollachia Empire, and that Eugard had no issue with his loyalties, giving her a cup of water after saying this. Though tolerating her selfishness despite the risk to her life, Volcas expressed genuine concern for her mind and body. Lynek rejected her proposal to teach her how to brew it herself, as she would not have been able to make it even if she had learned how to, yet he also had the responsibility of complying with her selfish request in order to remain with Eugard, placing him in a predicament where he would have had to continue bestowing her with poison out of obligation. Volcas delivered her a gentle insult, and Iris proceeded to rest in order to conserve her energy in order to interact with her beloved Eugard.

To prevent Iris from having to suffer from the poison, Volcas murdered her, and he was promptly eliminated by Eugard upon his discovery of the scene. As a result, Eugard would come to decree the execution of all wolf people and mole people, attributing Lynek as having purportedly aided in Iris's murder even though Volcas made his decision alone. Following a conversation with Eugard at Iris's funeral, Terriola spoke with Lynek, whom she had kept hidden to brew poison for her and to protect him from the imminent policy that decreed the execution of all wolf people and mole people. Despite the decree, Lynek had no words of apology for his brethren, as he and Volcas had made their decisions, and he chose to prioritize Eugard and Iris over his pack. She prepared a refuge for him at the Gladiator Island surrounded by Lake Violane and considered turning it into a prison for convicts to act as a distraction for him. Affirming to him that she had not spoken of her feelings for Eugard to him so she would not be a thief like her brother, the Thief Emperor, she wished Lynek well, and he set off for Lake Violane. For the rest of his life, Lynek made various poisons and medicines at the Gladiator Island.

Abilities

Healing Skills: Although not trained in magic, Lynek had the skill to be considered a healer with an irreplaceable role in the disciplinary unit. He could brew various medicines and poisons and had the knowledge to create even complex brews. With the rare herbs he was given by Whitaker, he was able to brew both a medicine that cured Iris's Batte Craze Syndrome and a poison that simulated its effects.
