Family
Frederica Baumann
Frederica is Garfiel’s sister, who left the Sanctuary when Garfiel was only 4 years old. She cares for him greatly and maintained communication with him via letters every once in a while. As children, when they fought, she often sent him flying, ignoring the seven year age difference between them.
Reshia Tinzel
Garfiel loved his mother greatly, even though he barely had any memories of her. Upon taking the first trial of the Sanctuary, he witnessed when she parted from Garfiel and Frederica and found herself involved in a landslide, leading to her supposed death. Unable to stand what he saw, Garfiel damaged his forehead, giving himself his signature scar, and he promised himself to protect everyone in the Sanctuary from the outside world at any cost, even if it meant destroying Echidna’s tomb.
During his conflict with Subaru in Arc 4, he reveals that he wanted her to be happy and he wanted the reason for her parting from him and his sister to be out of hatred for them. However, when he would once again challenge the first trial, he discovers that the real reason for their parting was so that she could find his father and return. Coming to terms with the past he wanted to close his eyes to, this allows him to grow and accept his mother’s decision.
A year later in Priestella, however, he would run into his mother again. Going by a new name, Reala Thompson, and married to Garek Thompson, she had no memory of the children of her past. When Garfiel talked to her, neglecting to reveal his name so as to not interrupt her life, she treated him a special guest in her house for saving her child and she enjoyed his company. Because of this, though, he felt indescribable emotions that caused him to break down into tears while embraced by Mimi. Furthermore, during his fight with Kurgan, she and her children were witnesses to the fight and and gave their cheers for him to win, ultimately giving him the push he needed.
Later in the aftermath, he would meet her again and, after another conversation, he would cry while embracing her and calling her “Mom,” to which she embraced him back and told him, “it’s okay Garf.” This implies that her emotions for her children are still there, even if her memories are not.
Fred & Rafiel Thompson
Garfiel first meets Fred from a sinking gondola in Priestella. Accompanying him back to his mother, he meets Fred’s sister, Rafiel, who was worried about her brother. After discovering that his mother was the same as theirs, he quickly put together that Fred and Rafiel are his half siblings. Naturally, he would grow to cherish them, but he did not give them his name, donning the name “Gorgeous Tiger” to refer to him by.
Later, during his match with Kurgan, his siblings start the cheers for Garfiel to win, giving him the strength he needed to claim victory over the War God.
Garek Thompson
Although the two only spoke briefly, they managed to get along. When Garek realized that Garfiel might know something about his wife, he was desperate to learn what he could and Garfiel respected him for taking care of his mother, despite her memory loss. Later, when Reala spoke to Garfiel about her husband having gone missing during the Battle for Priestella, Garfiel decided to look for him for them. However, his current opinion on Garek’s situation is unknown.
Ryuzu(s)
Garfiel sees the Ryuzu clones - Shima, Alma, Bilma, and Delma - as his grandmothers. More often than not, Garfiel was seen accompanying them, especially Shima. In the past, Shima would go out of her way to break the contract with Echidna to take Garfiel out of the tomb. The other Ryuzus also often worried about him, with Alma discussing the cause of his pain with Subaru. Presently, although there haven’t been many interactions between them, Garfiel still feels strongly about them like family.
As for the less self aware clones like Pico, he, alongside the main Ryuzus and Subaru, would begin trying to help them attain self-awareness, giving them names, different ribbons, and different hairstyles to help differentiate them.
Emilia Camp
Natsuki Subaru
Initially, Subaru and Garfiel were on relatively friendly terms. That said, after Subaru died in the first loop of Arc 4, the scent of the Witch thickened on him. When Ryuzu smelled it on him, she told Garfiel, causing him to become increasingly hostile with every failed loop. In one of those loops, his hostility was so great that Garfiel imprisoned him and kept him isolated and when Subaru escaped with the help of Otto, Ram, Patrasche, and the Arlam villagers, Garfiel slaughtered all of them just to get ahold of Subaru. That said, in the loop that followed, he had no issue with working with Subaru when faced with the possessed Emilia.
In the main timeline, Subaru discovered Garfiel’s history and he would force Garfiel to face his past after coming to blows with him. Once Garfiel finished the first trial of the Sanctuary, he became able to relax more around Subaru and even teased him about the motivational messages that he wrote for Emilia. Because of his defeat, he began respecting Subaru and he would start to call him Boss or Captain. Resolved, he became willing to follow Subaru anywhere, even to the dangerous battleground that held both the Bowel Hunter and numerous strong Demon Beasts.
A year later, while Garfiel still refers to Subaru with that title, the two have a brotherly relationship, both often messing around with Otto. In Priestella, when Mimi was injured, the first person he searched for was Subaru, believing that he would know what to do. Soon after, when the two were separated following the flood that consumed the area around City Hall, he would become desperate to find him, running around the town in search for him. When he found Al, he was even disappointed that he confused the smell of the two.
When it came time for someone to speak to the people of Priestella, it would be Garfiel to nominate Subaru for the job, believing him to be the most viable option. When Al told everyone, including Garfiel, off about Subaru being unable to do this, Garfiel would be angered that Subaru was being made light of. However, when he was told that calling Subaru Boss didn’t make him someone special and only put pressure on him, Garfiel would feel guilty, though Subaru would reassure him that it was fine to keep referring to him as he did, giving him relief. Afterwards, he followed Subaru’s orders, trusting his judgment to take on Kurgan.
In Arc 7, he would go along with the majority of the camp to smuggle into Vollachia and retrieve Subaru. Throughout the arc, he felt frustrated that he wasn’t with the others and able to help Subaru. He eventually reunited with Subaru in Arc 8, where Garfiel would feel great relief. Later, during the Great Disaster, Subaru’s trust in Garfiel would be felt at its greatest when he decided that Garfiel would be responsible for defeating a dragon. Naturally, Garfiel felt elated to be able to duke it out with a dragon and he was very grateful to him to be given such a monumental task. When he fought her, seeing how she was similar to him in the Sanctuary, he decided to take on the role that Subaru taken on for him, as he thought it would be a major turning point for her life as it was for his.
Beatrice
Garfiel respects Beatrice and is willing to listen to her if need be, such as when she stated that nobody was allowed to reach Subaru during the finale of the Great Disaster. He will also not hesitate to protect her, even warning her to get behind him when they confronted Sphinx.
Otto Suwen
When the two first met, Garfiel was hostile towards Otto. After the events of the fourth arc, Garfiel gradually took a liking to Otto and the two currently have a brotherly relationship. Otto tends to unconsciously indulge Garfiel because of the similarities he sees between Garfiel and Regin in his younger years.
Ram
Garfiel holds strong feelings towards Ram, even expressing his love for her and often going out of his way to compliment her or say something good about her, despite him always being turned down and often treated as nothing more than a distant acquaintance. In one of the lost arc 4 loops when Roswaal stabbed both Ram and Garfiel, he risked his life to prioritize saving Ram, despite knowing that they'll both die. Despite her cold and often hostile demeanor, Ram can be seen caring for Garfiel and his well-being, going as far as helping him to face his past and overcome his fear of the outside world.
Patrasche
When they first met, due to Garfiel trying to defend his home from Subaru before he found out who he was, Patrasche attempted to attack him to defend Subaru, resulting in the boy easily taking her attack and slamming her on her back. Garfiel respected her loyalty and apologized for his actions. That said, Patrasche ended up getting payback later after his confrontation with Subaru, where she would charge him and send him flying in his weakened state. After this, the two seem to be on friendly terms.
Clind
The two are friendly enough terms following the incident in Costuul. When they met again in Arc 9, the two showed respect for each other, despite his relationship with Frederica.
Felt Camp
Reinhard van Astrea
Reinhard and Garfiel first met upon Garfiel’s return to the inn after the unsuccessful negotiations with Kiritaka Muse. Immediately upon laying eyes on him, Garfiel reacted with extreme hostility, practically teleporting to Reinhard and attacking him with everything he had. Naturally, even the strongest attack Garfiel could muster was easily countered by the Sword Saint with a single hand. After the situation de-escalated, the two formally greeted each other, with Reinhard expressing happiness for finally being able to meet the man who called himself "Emilia's shield". To his sadness, however, Garfiel was subconsciously scarred by their previous exchange and seemingly developed something akin to an inferiority complex towards the Sword Saint. However, Garfiel eventually comes to terms with his insecurity towards Reinhard and earnestly entrusts him with the safety of Subaru and Emilia in his stead while he prepares for his confrontation with the undead Kurgan and Theresia van Astrea.
Ezzo Cadner
After searching for the remains of the Witch beneath Priestella, the two seemed to be on rather friendly terms. When they met again at the Pleiades Watchtower, they showed respect for each other and were friendly.
Anastasia Camp
Anastasia Hoshin
Although the two haven’t interacted as of yet, Anastasia found Mimi’s behavior around Garfiel interesting, and she
Mimi Pearlbaton
When Mimi first saw Garfiel, she immediately fell in love with him. In Priestella, Mimi took Garfiel with her and they wandered around town together. Though he was left somewhat confused by her antics, he still went along with her, not wanting to do anything to accidentally hurt her. She was impressed by his skill when he saved a kid from a gondola and later, she helped comfort him when he learned of his mother’s current state, letting him cry in her arms.
During the battle the next day, Mimi decided to help him search for Garek, though she also made sure to rein in Garfiel’s combative temperament so that they didn’t get themselves killed. When Mimi was heavily injured shortly after their first fight, Garfiel blamed himself and was heavily shaken by his own weakness and inability to protect her and he intended to get payback. At the end of the battle, when she was in the middle of recovery, she pounced Garfiel when she heard he was okay, though he still scolded her for her carelessness that led to her wound opening.
Ricardo Welkin
Ricardo was suspicious of Garfiel at first, but soon warmed up to him after Garfiel saved Mimi from dying. Likewise, Ricardo told him to hit his enemies back for what they did to Mimi and not wallow in his shame after what happened to her, which he took to heart. Later, they even worked together rather well when going to retrieve the remains of a Witch.
Priscilla Camp
Heinkel Astrea
Garfiel and Heinkel have an odd relationship. Following Flying Dragon Cataclysm in Guaral, Garfiel was seen accompanying the man several times, Garfiel struggling with Heinkel’s attitude and Heinkel becoming irritated with Garfiel sticking by him. However, Garfiel doesn’t seem to dislike the man.
Later, Garfiel would save his life from Madelyn Eschart and challenge her himself. Heinkel, frightful of the dragon that had just given him a beating, believed Garfiel was nuts, but after seeing Garfiel clash with the dragon as an equal, both Heinkel’s awe and fear were heightened before Garfiel’s might. When Garfiel was struck down, when he got to his feet, and Heinkel called him crazy for challenging a dragon, Garfiel claimed he was still fighting, as evidenced by his wielding his sword in hand instead of fleeing, something which Heinkel couldn’t make an excuse to himself for.
After witnessing Garfiel stop Madelyn’s breath attack with his body, he wouldn’t be able to believe his eyes. Ultimately, when Madelyn flew high into the sky, Garfiel would entrust Heinkel with flinging him up to the sky, something which garnered Garfiel’s victory.
Al
At first, Garfiel didn’t care much for Al due to his desperation to find Subaru and disappointment in finding him instead. Later, when Al was trying to defend Subaru by stating the reality of what everyone was asking him to do, Garfiel got angry at him, but he couldn’t refute his words and was led to feel guilty instead.
Following their heated confrontation, Garfiel exhibits no grudge against Al and had no issue engaging with him in casual conversation. However, when Al inititated his plan to remove Subaru from the world, Garfiel did not hesitate to attack him, though he ultimately lost against him in the face of his Authority. Naturally, Al is now Garfiel’s enemy.
Nine Divine Generals
Olbart Dunkelkenn
Garfiel does not like the Vicious Old Man. When the two confronted each other following the battle with Kafma, Garfiel would be antagonistic towards him for his disrespect. Unfortunately, he was too weak to be able to win against the man, who saw Garfiel as a child. After being given guidance by Roswaal, to his chagrin, Olbart began to regard Garfiel as a serious threat.
After the Great Disaster, Garfiel was left rather annoyed with the old man, despite his frustration at being unable to heal him. That said, it does not seem that he bears too deep of a grudge against the Third.
Groovy Gumlet
Following the Great Disaster, Groovy showed appreciation towards Garfiel for healing him. Though they seemed to get along fairly well with each other, each was left baffled by each other’s place in the previous battle, as Garfiel fought a Dragon to the ground and kept fighting and Groovy fought to the point that he should have died, having taken on immense damage.
Madelyn Eschart
The two would come to blows during the Great Disaster. While Madelyn would possess Mezoreia, she would regard Garfiel as nothing more than a pest to be squashed, just like other humans. However, her rage and fear would rise as Garfiel not only withstood all of her attacks, which included the almighty dragon breath, but even managed to deal damage and even toss the giant dragon. During her breakdown that led her to flying in the sky and unleashing her most dangerous attack, Garfiel realized that Madelyn was like himself back at the Sanctuary. Crying, scared, and someone who could only lash out at everything around them, including themselves. Deciding to bring her down with force, he wanted to talk to Madelyn and lead her down a new path, just like Subaru had done for him.
Kafma Irulux
During the battle for Lupugana, the two would clash. Garfiel’s sheer strength and tenacity impressed Kafma and when Garfiel survived one of his deadliest attacks, though he thought of the way he handled it insane, he respected Garfiel as his equal. Eventually, he would lose to Garfiel, but there would be no bad feelings between them.
Garfiel himself also greatly respected the warrior. When Olbart started disparaging Kafma for his failure, Garfiel defended the honor of his defeated adversary.
Vollachians
Kurgan
Though he would only meet him post-mortem, Garfiel would immediately recognize his corpse soldier, despite being covered in the Witch Cult garb. They would fight, though due to Garfiel’s internal struggle and the sheer difference in their strength, the War God would brutalize him heavily. However, during their third and final rematch, Kurgan would recognize Garfiel as a warrior worthy of him donning his four swords and when Garfiel managed to barely overcome him and land the finishing blow, Kurgan called their match “magnificent.”
Gustekans
Elsa Granhiert
The two met in battle in Roswaal Manor, shortly before it burned down. As they clashed, Garfiel found her to be a difficult opponent and Elsa ended up feeling a twisted sort of love for the boy, more determined than ever to cut him open. Ultimately, she became the first person Garfiel would kill.
Following the incident with the Earth Spider in Pappelt, which took place about two months after the Sanctuary Incident, Garfiel found himself hallucinating the Bowel Hunter, who seemed to mock and disparage his inability to protect others and lack of strength. This continued for more than 10 months, up to the Battle for Priestella. However, he overcame this and he eventually stopped seeing her as his fear faded after clashing with Kurgan.
Witches
Sphinx
Though Garfiel was surprised by Sphinx’s appearance being a match for the other Ryuzus, he considered her an enemy due to her involvement with the Great Disaster. Since he wasn’t bound by her appearance, he, alongside Roswaal and Beatrice, was able to take her down with relative ease. The two confronted each other once again towards the end of her final stand.
Others
Spica
Although he had never met Rui Arneb, when Beatrice and Otto recognized her as the archbishop, Garfiel was immediately hostile with her and was prepared to take her down personally. However, due to the trust of people in her, such as Yorna Mishigure and Medium O'Connell, he calmed down. However, he remained wary of her and even suggested that she either be tied up or watched.
Later, after it was decided that Spica would remain behind in Vollachia to help clear her name, Garfiel looked forward to the day that she would return to the kingdom, as he’d become fond of her also.
Volcanica
Garfiel always respected Dragons since before he joined the Emilia Camp and he’d been disappointed to miss out on seeing the Dragon after being forced to remain behind in Priestella. However, when he finally got a chance to see Volcanica with his own eyes, Garfiel was left stunned by the Divine Dragon’s presence and he immediately realized that Volcanica was much stronger and had significantly more presence than Mezoreia had.
