Sanctuary Incident

The Sanctuary Incident was an event that took place roughly 2 months after the arrival of Natsuki Subaru into the world. It is the primary conflict of Arc 4.

Following the return from the Royal Capital after the successful Subjugation of the White Whale and Subjugation of Sloth, the Emilia Camp discovered that the half of the villagers that had been sent to the Sanctuary, as well as Roswaal L. Mathers and Ram, had yet to return to the Arlam Village or Roswaal Manor. Deciding to chase after them, Subaru, Emilia, and the merchant Otto Suwen made their way to the Sanctuary, where they found themselves involved in a long, convoluted scheme set up by Roswaal.

After a long battle with assassins who had come to attack the manor, an army of witchbeasts accompanied by them, the desperate mage who wanted Subaru to become like him, the extensive and traumatic trials holding up the Sanctuary's barriers, and even one of the Three Great Witchbeasts, Subaru managed to solidify the bond of the Emilia Camp, obtain new supporters for the camp, and force Roswaal's hand to help Emilia in earnest. However, unbeknownst to everyone, because of these events, a Witch was once more set upon the world.

Background

The Barrier of the Sanctuary

In the era of the Great Calamity lived a noble of House Mathers named Altair Mathers, who experienced mana poisoning due to his inability to manipulate mana or cast magic, and his mana continued to build up in his body. After meeting the Witch of Greed, Echidna, she fixed his problem, kissing him, and soon after, took him as an apprentice. Sometime later, in the Sanctuary of Kremaldy, Echidna had brought Ryuzu Meyer to take part in her experiments and to help create the barrier of the Sanctuary. Alongside her daughter figure, Beatrice, the group spent their days in relative peace. However, things changed when the Warlock of Melancholy appeared. With Altair and Echidna having to hold him off, Beatrice and Ryuzu made their way to the large mana stone, which was made to act as part of the core of the Sanctuary's barrier. With no other choice remaining, Ryuzu was forced to sacrifice herself and become part of the core, resulting in the barrier being made and Hector being repelled.

After these events, after giving a Book of Wisdom to both Altair and Beatrice, Echidna entrusted the Forbidden Library to Beatrice. She was to wait and watch over the library until the day that "That Person", who was to be entrusted with Beatrice and the library's knowledge, arrived. Meanwhile, the copies of Ryuzu Meyer became the administrators of the Sanctuary, ordered to not enter the Witches' Graveyard for any reason. At some point following this, Echidna died, and, having collected the souls of the other Witches to join her in her Castle of Dreams, her body became part of the trials that connected to the barrier, and she and the other Witches continued to reside in the graveyard for four centuries. Roswaal, wishing to bring her back to life, continued his research into magic and followed his Book of Wisdom, even mastering the Soul Transcription spell and taking over each successive generation of House Mathers. Beatrice, however, did not leave the Forbidden Library, and she waited for "That Person" to arrive, faithfully following her own Book of Wisdom until one day, the book went blank.

Permafrost of Elior Forest

Approximately 100 years ago, a young Emilia experienced a vast change in her life when the Witch Cult's radical faction, led by the Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas, the Witch of Vainglory, Pandora, and the Black Serpent, appeared. Alongside the other cultists, they launched an assault on Elior Forest's elves and the moderate faction led by Geuse. The battle that followed resulted in Geuse taking in the Witch Factor of Sloth, Archi Elior's death, and Fortuna's death by the hands of a manipulated Geuse. In shock and rage, Emilia's magic ran out of her control and started freezing over the entire forest and its residents, and she killed Pandora over and over again. Realizing that she could not accomplish her goal, she wiped Emilia's memory of the incident, and she left her to freeze, while she twisted Geuse and turned him into the Sin Archbishop of Sloth who would become the most active member of the Witch Cult.

Garfiel's Trial

When he was young, Garfiel Tinzel and his sister Frederica Baumann were left in the Sanctuary while their mother, Reshia Tinzel, left to go find their father. Unknown to them, she ended up falling victim to a landslide, and she nearly lost her life. Years later, after Frederica had left the Sanctuary to find a place for the Sanctuary's residents, Garfiel found himself entering the Witches' Graveyard, and after taking the first trial, he witnessed what happened to his mother. Following this, he gave himself a permanent scar and resolved to protect the Sanctuary from all threats. Meanwhile, Shima, who had gone to retrieve him, had been removed as one of the Sanctuary's administrators for breaking the rules, and simultaneously, Echidna, who continued to exist in the Castle of Dreams, had started in her attempt to take over Shima's body.

The Day of Red Earth and Fire

Seven years after unfreezing Emilia from the ice, the Great Spirit Melakuera started a conflict in Elior Forest in an effort to kill Emilia, believing that her existence threatened the world. This led to a fight between Melakuera and Puck that resulted in the former's death. On the verge of dying, despite his contract with someone prior, he made a contract with Emilia to become her contracted spirit, saving his life but sealing his memories away.

The Loot House Incident & The Wolgarm Incident

After learning of the existence of Subaru through his Book of Wisdom and having collected Emilia for the Royal Selection, Roswaal hired Elsa Granhiert to steal the insignia from her, leading to a conflict that caused her to retreat and Subaru to be brought back to the manor. However, shortly after that, Meili Portroute was ordered to cause havoc near the manor, leading to another incident. Thanks to Subaru's efforts, she was repelled, and she started acquiring more witchbeasts to rebuild her numbers for the next time she attacked. Sometime later, Elsa and Meili were given orders to kill the maids residing in Roswaal Manor from Mother.

Roswaal's Preparations

Around the time that Roswaal was returning to the Manor with Emilia and Puck, taking advantage of her weakened mental state, Roswaal used his magic to tamper with the contract between the two, causing Puck to find it harder for him to come out, directly affecting Emilia's mental state. After returning to the manor, Roswaal re-hired Frederica as a maid and handed her a letter directing everyone to the Sanctuary. He also had a cryptic talk with Beatrice regarding visiting the Sanctuary. Roswaal mentioned that she should know full well what this should mean and left. After hiring an assassin to attack the maids, he left for the Sanctuary, where he entered the Witches' Graveyard to purposefully allow himself to be injured, and he waited for everyone to return so that his scheme for Subaru could begin.

Subjugation of Sloth

Following the Subjugation of the White Whale, as Rem's group returned to the Royal Capital, they were ambushed by Regulus and the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos. This resulted in Rem's name and memories being eaten, which caused Ram to put a notice out to hire a new maid from among the Arlam Villagers. Meanwhile, Subaru, in preparation for his coming battle with the Sin Archbishop of Sloth and in order to prevent any damages being done to the villagers, requested that they be transported somewhere else. However, the villagers were forced to split into two groups: the group traveling to the Royal Capital and the group led by Ram to enter the Sanctuary, where they were essentially taken hostage by the Sanctuary residents. After Sloth's defeat and Subaru taking the Witch Factor of Sloth for himself, he and all those in the Royal Capital, returned to the manor.

Trials of the Sanctuary

After returning to the village, Subaru's group realized that the other villagers had yet to return, and after returning to the manor, they met Frederica, who had been re-hired by Roswaal, and Petra Leyte, who had decided to become one of the new maids for Roswaal Manor in order to support Subaru. After discussing a while over what they would do and meeting with Beatrice who pointed them toward the Sanctuary, Subaru decided to take his group to the Sanctuary. The next day, he entrusted the unconscious Rem to their care, Frederica gave him a glintstone necklace to assist him with Garfiel, and Petra gave him her handkerchief for good luck.

Heading to the Sanctuary, Subaru's group found themselves approaching its barrier, which caused Emilia to pass out, and through the glintstone, Subaru found himself teleported elsewhere. Seeing a young girl with pink hair, he followed her to the Witches' Graveyard, where he met Echidna in the Castle of Dreams, learned about the Witches, became her Apostle of Greed, and had his memories of her wiped from his mind. After leaving the tomb, he encountered Garfiel, who was ready to attack him. Having defeated Patrasche, who attacked him after deeming him a threat, he attempted to attack Subaru, who managed to calm him down through Frederica's name, where he learned they were siblings. Afterward, his group was led further into the Sanctuary, where the injured Roswaal waited for them. With Subaru learning his situation, that the villagers were being held hostage, and that the Sanctuary residents wanted the trials to be completed so that the barrier could come down, Emilia was entrusted with taking the trials.

Later that night, Emilia entered the Witches' Graveyard, which started to glow in response, intending to take on the first trial. However, the lights seemed to dim quickly. Worried about her, Subaru rushed into the graveyard without any consequences, much to the surprise of the others, and found the unconscious Emilia on the ground. However, Subaru was then thrust into the first trial to face his past, which he managed to complete, which Emilia failed.

The Bet with Roswaal

Subaru waking up after the first trial turned out to be his checkpoint, and he experienced a few loops, in which he experienced that assassins, accompanied by witchbeasts, attacked the mansion; Roswaal had tampered with Emilia's contract with Puck; he and Beatrice had their own Gospels, just like the Witch Cult; Garfiel did not trust Subaru due to the scent wrapped around him that Shima picked up; the facility where the original Ryuzu was located; the other Witches were in the Graveyard, and after meeting Typhon and Minerva, he made a bet with Daphne to kill all of the Three Great Witchbeasts; Echidna awakened the Witch Factor of Sloth within him, and he was even allowed to retain his memories; the Great Rabbit had been summoned; Satella could possess Emilia body as part of the penalties of mentioning Return by Death; and Roswaal was aware of his ability to challenge fate.

In the main timeline, he spoke with Roswaal again, where Roswaal verbally cornered him and stated his intention for wanting Subaru to be like him. Shortly after, Subaru went to take on the second trial, which showed him the possible futures that would have followed each and every one of his deaths. After experiencing all 17 alternate presents, Carmilla appeared in an effort to try and save his mind, though she only managed to anger him after taking Rem's appearance and saying things she wouldn't have said, and he was once again invited to Echidna's Tea Party, where she tried to convince him to enter a contract with him to use his Return by Death with Echidna supervising him. However, the other Witches, including Sekhmet appeared to stop it from taking place. After hearing of the negative side of the contract and Echidna's long drawn speech, Subaru rejected her hand, and shortly after, Satella appeared before them all. Because of this, he learned that Satella and the Witch of Envy were separate entities caused by the Witch Factor of Envy. Rejecting Satella's love, he bit off his tongue, which Typhon and Sekhmet respected, despite Minerva's aggression, and Satella, on the verge of tears, questioned what the trial made him see. Afterward, Carmilla made it to where Subaru could understand her feelings, and Daphne prevented Typhon from interfering as Minerva healed him. After this, he rejected Echidna's contract, resulting in him having his right to take the trials revoked, and after claiming that he would save Satella, he left the graveyard.

After waking up to Patrasche, who had Otto release and chase after her, had dragged Subaru out of the tomb, and was bruised up from entering it in the first place, he decided to take the trial again, only to find that he couldn't anymore, much to his great frustration. A short time later, he went to confront Roswaal again about ways to overcome the trial, where Roswaal revealed that he was the one who hired the assassins, and Subaru revealed that he couldn't take the trials anymore. Outside, he spoke with Emilia, and after being calmed by her and hearing about her resolve to take on the trials without shortcuts, frustrated that he realized that he didn't put his trust in her, Otto met with him and struck him, wanting him to trust his friends and stop trying to take on everything himself. After a discussion about the things to come, he went back to Roswaal and made a bet with him that he would succeed in a way different from Roswaal's intentions, with Roswaal accepting it and preparing something that would bind the loser of the bet to a curse.

After leaving and having a short conversation with Ram, Otto went to prepare for taking on Garfiel, obtaining Ram's assistance and setting up traps, while Subaru went to the facility where the original Ryuzu was located to confirm that he was still an Apostle of Greed, as well as speak with Ryuzu Alma about Roswaal's plans to confirm whether she might be an enemy, and he learned of the difference between Shima and the other copies and partially why Garfiel was against the Sanctuary's liberation. Afterward, he met with Emilia, who couldn't get sleep, learned about part of her past, including Roswaal's actions, and helped her sleep. Meeting with Puck immediately after, he spoke about the circumstances, which led him to later sever his contract with Emilia so that they could both regain their memories. Heartbroken, she asked Subaru, who had come to visit her again, to promise to hold her until morning. However, after she woke up and saw that Subaru wasn't there, as he'd gone into the tomb to carve words of encouragement into the tomb, she called him, Puck, and even Fortuna liars and ran away to hide.

The next day, with the Ryuzus hiding away and Emilia missing, while Subaru went to find Emilia, Garfiel ran off to the Ryuzu facility, where he fell for Otto's trap. Because he had dropped him in a hole filled with Zodda Bugs and stole his glintstone, Otto ran through the forest, with Garfiel hot on his trail. With Ram assisting him in holding off Garfiel, Subaru found Emilia in the tomb and spoke with her, where she unloaded all of her beliefs and negative feelings onto him. Despite the argument that followed and being told that she was loved by Subaru, because she didn't believe him, he kissed her and told her again, and after telling her that he'd kick all of her worries to the side, the two left the tomb together, Subaru suffering from its kickback.

Outside, he met with Garfiel, who had been waiting for them to finish and was heavily injured from his previous fight. After discussing his reason for keeping the Sanctuary from being liberated, Garfiel attempted to attack Subaru in his beastified state, but with Puck's help inside of the glintstone necklace he had, he managed to revert him back, and after a fist fight with him, he defeated Garfiel by using his newly awakened Authority of Sloth, with Patrasche knocking him out at the end. Though, as a result of the fight, Subaru's Gate was destroyed. Later, he awoke and was convinced by Ram and Subaru to face his trial, and after accomplishing it and coming to terms with his past, he decided to assist Subaru. Afterward, once Emilia entered the tomb to take the first trial, Shima, supported by Delma, told the group what happened 400 years ago so that everyone could understand why the Sanctuary was created. Afterward, Subaru, Garfiel, and Otto went to speak with Roswaal to show that things were already going in Subaru's way, and after leaving, Subaru gave Ram the glintstone necklace with Puck in it, and they left for the manor.

Battle

The Burning of the Old Roswaal Manor

At the manor, Frederica told Petra to leave as the assassins had entered the manor. Though she did run, remembering that Rem was there and that Subaru had trusted Petra with her care, she ran to retrieve her, putting her in Elsa's sights again. Fortunately, Frederica appeared and stopped her attack. With Elsa revealing that they alongside Beatrice were her targets, Frederica ordered Petra to run. Hoping that Beatrice might be able to help, Petra ran around to try and find her but failed to. Desperate, she asked for Subaru's help, and to her surprise, he appeared before her. Meanwhile, he had Garfiel, armed with his gauntlet shields, assist his sister in taking on Elsa, taking over the fight for her and leaving her to take Rem out of the mansion.

As he took care of Elsa, Subaru gave a barrier crystal to prevent any witchbeasts from coming near Petra and left her care with Otto, while he found and confronted Beatrice in her library, wanting to drag her out of the manor. However, realizing that she was bound to die thanks to Roswaal having leaked information to Elsa about her Door Crossing, she had accepted that she was going to die. Though Subaru disagreed with her acceptance, when she asked if Subaru would be "That Person" for her, he denied, causing her to kick him out of the library. Shortly after, he was reunited with Otto and Petra, who revealed that there was one witchbeast, a Guiltylowe, that the crystal did not work on. Then, as they fell through the floor, Frederica brought the three out of the mansion. Shortly after, they were confronted with Meili, riding atop a Rock Pig. With Frederica staying behind to hold them off, Subaru and company ran off. Heading for the hidden escape route in Roswaal's office, they came across numerous dead witchbeasts and the Guiltylowe.

After they ran from the Guiltylowe, they found themselves in the kitchen, where Subaru decided to make a trap for the Guiltylowe. However, despite luring it there, he failed to create a dust explosion, leaving Otto and Petra to toss Otto's oil at it and ignite it. Though this failed to kill it, the flames managed to deter it, and the manor was set ablaze. Entrusting Rem to Otto and Petra, he had them leave for the escape route while he went to find Beatrice. The flames, meanwhile, as well as his sister's fight, spread to Garfiel's fight. Using his Divine Protection of Earth Spirits to knock Meili onto the ground and threaten her, he continued his battle with Elsa while Frederica slaughtered the army of witchbeasts. With Garfiel landing another fatal blow on Elsa, Meili set the Rock Pig on him, though he managed to gut it using his beastification. With Garfiel recognizing her as a vampire, claiming one of the Witches was one and still died, and Elsa retelling her story to him, their fight continued. Despite nearly having the upper hand, Elsa was distracted by Meili nearly being crushed by the burning mansion and then saved and taken away by Frederica, and Garfiel pounced her, allowing them to land severe injuries on each other. Finally, Garfiel successfully managed to kill Elsa by crushing her with the body of the Rock Pig, and Garfiel left the mansion.

Meanwhile, Subaru found Beatrice, and he kept trying to persuade her to leave with him, still claiming not to be That Person, and stating he wanted to stay with her regardless, Beatrice threw him out of the Forbidden Library, evacuating him out of the front door to make sure he didn't burn in the fires of the mansion. Going back inside, Subaru continued searching for her, only to be chased down by the reanimated corpse of Elsa, and soon after, the Guiltylowe. Though Elsa's corpse tore through the witchbeast, she continued chasing after him as he ran for the last door in the manor, the one leading to the escape route. Despite threatening the backdraft explosion that would follow, he managed to enter the library while the backdraft incinerated Elsa's corpse. Inside the library, Subaru and Beatrice spoke further as the space of the library starting to break. Not knowing what else to say, he asked her to save him and to go with him so that she wouldn't be alone any longer, claiming that he would leave such a powerful impression on her that she would always remember him, even long after he died. Telling her to let go of the notion of a person that she wouldn't even know appearing to rescue her, he asked her to choose him and not fear the future where they would be separated, and in response, she accepted his hand, made a contract to be his spirit, and left with him with magic to the Sanctuary, calling his name all the while.

The Oni, The Great Spirit, and The Mage

Deciding to actively take part in his bet rather than wait in the shadows for things to go his way, Roswaal dressed himself in his usual attire and left to confront Emilia, who was taking the trials. Coming across her and Ram, Roswaal proceeded to mentally attack Emilia, but this instead backfired, and she was resolved as she left to take on the second trial. Deciding to speed up his plans, Roswaal ordered Ram to wait for Emilia as she completed the trial as he left to make snow fall over the Sanctuary. However, just as he started preparing, Ram had followed him and resolved herself to stop him from doing so, with Puck at her side.

The battle soon spilled out of the Ryuzu facility, and Roswaal displayed the reason for which he was the greatest mage living in the present day, using three-, four-, and even fivefold magic to corner his opponents. As a lull in their battle emerged, Puck questioned Roswaal about the spell he placed on Emilia and tampered with her contract, which he replied with honesty and even claimed that Subaru was the last key he needed for his wish to come true. He also guessed that Puck's memories of before the contract had returned, and Puck claimed to remember someone with mannerisms and fashion akin to Roswaal's, going as far as to claim that Roswaal was stuck in the past. Afterward, the battle continued, with Roswaal claiming that he was disappointed in Ram for being unable to take is life for her brethren. However, she instead claimed to love him, much to his great confusion and frustration, and after denying it, only to be refuted, the fight continued.

Surrounded by ice showing off the reflections of Ram, as well as statues of ice, Roswaal used his flames to destroy them, only to be caught off guard by an oversized Puck, leading him to believe that he'd turned into the Beast of the End. However, Puck merely grew bigger and hurled more ice at him, which he used his martial arts skills to defend against, and wiped away the massive Puck with magic. However, this provided an opening for Ram to steal his Book of Wisdom, and as she threw it in the flames, Roswaal struck her with an Al Goa. Confused and not knowing what to do, Roswaal took the injured Ram in his arms, and Puck started to tell him that he lost. However, he noticed that snow had started, and that Roswaal had successfully managed to simultaneously cast the weather manipulation spell alongside everything else he'd been casting, earning praise from Puck and being told that he would never be like Hector and causing him to go to delay the coming problem and protect the villagers. Meanwhile, with Roswaal lost, he started pouring mana into Ram, as he was unable to heal her, and he cried to his teacher what he should do.

Emilia's Trials

After entering the tomb and claiming that she wouldn't forgive Subaru until he apologized for breaking his promise to engrave the words of encouragement into the tomb, she began her first trial, where she met the scornful Echidna and witnessed everything that happened a century prior. Finally able to come to terms with her past, she completed the first task, to Echidna's chagrin. Leaving the tomb, she found Ram there by herself, who she confirmed to that she finally completed the first trial, to Ram's surprise, and after showing her resolve to her, Ram decided to ask Emilia to help her save Roswaal, finally trusting her enough to ask for her help. She explained that Roswaal had lost his way, and when Emilia asked what she could do, Ram asked her to win the Royal Selection, believing that by doing so, she would be able to help free him.

A short time later, Roswaal appeared, causing Ram to slightly tremble. Roswaal commended Emilia for taking on the task, but at the same time, attempted to mentally attack her, wanting to make it so that she would continue to fail. However, not only did this fail to work, but her resolve was even stronger, both in herself and in Subaru, and she had already completed the first trial. Intending to prove him wrong, she went back in and began her second trial. In this trial, she was made to experience an alternate reality in which Pandora and Regulus never attacked the forest, allowing her to have a happy life with both Geuse and Fortuna, and the forest remaining unfrozen. However, after some time of this, she spoke with the illusion of Archi that this was something that could no longer be and accepted that, causing the illusion to turn into Echidna, who was crying after Emilia thanked her for allowing her to see a happy alternate present, and vanished. Afterward, Emilia fell into the lake below, seeing her reflection for the first time since before making a contract with Puck, before completing the second trial.

Going outside, she came face to face with the residents of the Sanctuary and Arlam Village. Milde Arlam had been the one leading the group, and she explained that the villagers had come to trust her in spite of her appearance, and they wanted to support her as she took on the trials. Happy and prepared, Emilia turned to face the third trial. However, when she was forced to look at the possible futures, Echidna had thrust at her numerous futures that would only end badly, causing Minerva to step in and tell her as much. After a short conversation with Minerva, in which Minerva revealed that she knew Emilia's Mother and Subaru, gave her a hug in response for her turning around, and promised her to have a tea party with all of the Witches, she finally completed the Trials of the Tomb, allowing her to visit one of the cores of the barrier: Echidna's body. Despite being confused about it, not recognizing her due to having been older-looking compared to the Echidna in the Castle of Dreams, she still broke the spell partially maintaining the barrier. Leaving the tomb, however, she bore witness to the entire area being completely covered in snow.

The Emilia Camp versus the Great Rabbit

With snow falling on the Sanctuary, Puck had gone to protect the people there with a large structure made of ice, claiming that they could thank Emilia. Nearby, she also witnessed as a massive tree made of ice had grown, leading Emilia to the Ryuzu facility, where she bore witness as Shima sacrificed herself to bring down the barrier completely, and she, alongside the large crystal, disappeared. After asking for Ram and Roswaal's location, the Ryuzus led her to Roswaal, and she tried to convince him to go with her, only for him to claim that it was too late, causing Emilia to chide him for it. Shortly after, the Great Rabbit finally made its appearance, making its way toward the immense amount of mana falling over the area, and Emilia froze the ones that appeared around her. Creating a path, she entrusted Roswaal and Ram to the Ryuzus and created a path back to the Sanctuary, the Great Rabbit hot on their trail.

Having returned to the Witches' Graveyard to take refuge, Emilia prepared herself to take on all of the Great Rabbit. Soon after, Subaru and Beatrice, now contracted, arrived to fight against the Great Rabbit alongside her. Claiming to have the perfect handicap for their first fight together, the two cast Minya against the beast, and coming up with a plan, Subaru used himself as bait while using his spiritual arts while running around the Great Rabbit, lining arrow after arrow around them while carrying Beatrice to let her gather power and leaving Emilia to trace the line he drew with her magic. Eventually, after having completely surrounded the Great Rabbit with magic and elevating it so that it couldn't escape, Beatrice cast Al Shamak, trapping and isolating all of the Great Rabbit in an alternate space, leaving it to tear itself apart.

Aftermath

Following the fight, Roswaal ended up cursed with an Oath Bound Curse Mark, and after Subaru and the other members of the Emilia Camp took their turns striking Roswaal for his transgressions, he informed them of it and that the conditions were that he would not bring harm to anyone in the camp, else his soul burns away, never to return to Od Lagna. He also agreed to earnestly back Emilia in the Royal Selection, unlike how he used her like a tool before. Later, he spoke with Beatrice in front of Echidna's body, where, after hearing Beatrice's thoughts on leaving the Forbidden Library and contracting with Subaru, he revealed to her that he was still the Roswaal from 400 years ago, causing her to slap him with her shoe. Sometime later, Clind and Annerose Miload arrived to move all of the Arlam and Sanctuary Villagers away from the Sanctuary.
