Otto Suwen/Relationships

Family

Mazeran Suwen

Otto and his dad have a good relationship. When Otto returned to Picoutatte after Subaru was taken to Vollachia, Mazeran was more than willing to use his company to assist his son with his goal.

Oslo Suwen

Oslo is Otto's older brother. Although Oslo believes that Otto has the ability to be a merchant, he also believes that he is someone destined to get in trouble wherever he goes.

In the past, when Otto had still not developed the ability to speak and had hearing problems caused by his divine protection, Oslo noticed that written communication was possible and thus taught Otto how to write. In turn, Otto viewed Oslo in high regard, always asking for his advice before asking anyone else.

Regin Suwen

Regin is Otto's younger brother. Otto and Regin are shown to trust each other deeply. However, Regin often worries about his brother's wellbeing, believing him to be naturally unlucky, as do most of his family. Otto was Regin's inspiration to become a veterinarian, as Otto had a liking for animals.

In the past, Regin used to often demand Otto's attention, to which Otto reacted by indulging him. Ironically, despite the fact that the two trust each other, Regin was also the one who gave away the secret of Otto's Divine Protection when they were children. This was when he once overheard him speaking with the family's Ground Dragon, Frufoo.

Otto is aware of Regin's feelings towards Marone and is very supportive of their relationship.

Frufoo

Frufoo is Otto's ground dragon, whom Otto has known since his childhood. Otto feels a close connection with Frufoo, considering her a friend and a member of his family. Although she sees Otto as a troublesome person and often questions him, Frufoo is completely loyal to him. When Otto was chased out of Picoutatte, he took Frufoo for his journey as a merchant and she has been traveling with him since.

Furthermore, Otto can communicate with her trough his Divine Protection, and she often engaged in conversation with Otto during his days as a traveling merchant. Thanks to her company, Otto did not struggle much with solitude.

Emilia Camp

Natsuki Subaru

Albeit adjudging Subaru a problematic person, Otto starts considering Subaru his friend during the events that take place at the Sanctuary. Otto is willing to help him out whenever possible - even shown to get slightly infuriated when Subaru thought that he would not understand his problems. Despite Otto's initial claims that their relationship revolves around profit, he cares for Subaru as a person. He demonstrated this by freeing Subaru, who was kidnapped by Garfiel, in one loop, after which Otto consoled him and told him that he came to save him solely because they are friends; later in the same loop, he even sacrificed his life to save Subaru from Garfiel. Otto consoled Subaru yet again before and after his discussion with Roswaal. Otto put his life on the line once more during the battle against Garfiel in the Battle of the Lost Forest of Kremaldy, in a scheme to give Subaru and Emilia time to talk.

Ever since then, he has been the one to keep Subaru and Emilia in check, and he often complains to Subaru over a drink. He respects Subaru’s naïveté, believing that that is what made him such a good person, as in the case with Emilia. However, he often finds himself frustrated with Subaru’s antics. This is most recognizable in Arc 8 in regards to Spica. Concerned over the safety of everyone, Subaru included, he simply couldn’t bring himself to align his views with Subaru. However, in spite of this, he would be sure to keep an eye on both of them. Later, he would even tell Roswaal that he would remain the stone in Subaru’s way to help keep him on the right path.

Like Emilia and the others, Otto was heavily against Subaru returning to the Pleiades Watchtower, as he had been fighting nonstop since the Battle for Priestella and the Pleiades Watchtower Expedition, and he wanted him to rest. Realizing that he wouldn’t be able to stop him, he tasked Garfiel with watching over him and protecting him. After learning of Subaru being kidnapped by Al, Otto, though feigning calm while assessing the situation, was extremely angry and frustrated that he was unable to prevent yet another problem. However, after letting out his frustration, Otto was already making preparations for confronting Al in the case that the Felt Camp failed.

Emilia

Even before becoming an official member of the Emilia camp, Otto identified with Emilia's circumstances and decided to support her for the Royal Selection. As Otto also experienced similar matters in his childhood, he relates to what she has had to put up with. The two currently have a friendly relationship. Otto often gives her advice, which Emilia appreciates. She thinks of Otto as a very dependable friend and encourages him to take better care of himself. When he later lets out all of his stress and frustration and begins putting himself down, Emilia was the one to comfort him and encourage him, despite feeling just as angry and frustrated as he was at the time.

Garfiel Tinzel

When the two first met, Garfiel was hostile towards Otto, calling him names such as "third rate" because Garfiel didn't consider Otto's name worth remembering. During the battle of the Lost Woods of Kremaldy, Otto surprised Garfiel with his fighting capabilities, to which he apologizes, saying he had underestimated him, but now understands he's serious. After the events of the fourth arc, Garfiel gradually took a liking to Otto and the two currently have a brotherly relationship. Otto tends to unconsciously indulge Garfiel because of the similarities he sees between Garfiel and Regin in his younger years.

Frederica Baumann

Frederica and Otto have a friendly relationship. They consider each other highly reliable people and respect each other, and the two are shown to share their concerns about Garfiel as his sibling figures. Frederica admires Otto's hardworking nature, although she pities him for its excessivenes as well. Frederica, Otto, and Ram are known to drink alcohol together occasionally.

Petra Leyte

Although Petra tends to make harsh, backhanded remarks towards Otto and slight him, she recognizes his capabilities and respects him to a certain extent. Petra has also referred to him as "Ottottotto" in the non-canon Re:Zero Starting Break Time series, mocking his name in a childlike way. In turn, Otto treats her with gentleness and tolerates her offenses, although he complains about it sometimes. Otto and Petra are the only people in Emilia's faction who are still wary of Roswaal, which creates a sense of trust between them. Likewise, the two are willing to entrust keeping an eye on both him and Subaru for each other when they are separated, such as during the events of Arc 5.

Ram

Ram constantly teases and disregards Otto, but the two get along well. Otto also seems to enjoy her company from time to time. Ram actually thinks of Otto as someone strong, in his own respective way. Ram, Otto, and Frederica are known to drink alcohol together occasionally.

Roswaal L. Mathers

At first, Otto wished to negotiate with the Margrave in order to sell oil. However, after becoming involved with the Emilia Camp’s troubles in Arc 4, he would become heavily distrusting of Roswaal, and he would take it upon himself to join the camp to help keep an eye on him and his schemes. This distrust is visible as Otto has even gone out of his way to try and restore his Tome of Wisdom to predict his plans.

This biggest display of his negative relationship with Roswaal is in Arc 8 after the discussion regarding Spica. Roswaal would attempt to have Otto follow Subaru’s decisions without a fuss. However, realizing what he was doing, Otto put his foot down that he would be the one to put his foot down if it was deemed necessary.

Patrasche

Otto and Patrasche respect each other, and Otto has even translated her words for Subaru, though he asked not to repeat some of those words.

Anastasia Camp

Anastasia Hoshin

The two would first meet in Priestella. As fellow merchants, the two knew how to handle talks with each other. Naturally, he and Anastasia would respect each other. Later in Arc 8, he and Anastasia would remain behind in Garkla, acting as partial general roles in the Fortified City’s defense.

Julius Juukulius

The two wouldn’t display any interactions until Arc 8. In said arc, Otto would find himself frustrated with Julius’s words that inspired Subaru to take Spica’s hand. Later, Julius would come to apologize, having mistakenly believed that he stole the words that Otto himself wanted to say. Despite the misunderstanding and frustration, Otto does seem to respect Julius, and he even recognized Julius’s views as similar to Subaru’s own.

Ricardo Welkin

Back when Otto was captured and taken prisoner by the Witch Cult, Ricardo was the one who saved him from certain death. After Otto finally grasped the situation, he almost started crying. Which is when Ricardo gave him a white handkerchief and turned around, walking out of the cave they were in, in order to give Otto some privacy - further telling him that men aren't to cry in front of people. Otto eventually started tearing up, drying his tears into the handkerchief, as he was grateful for not losing his life. Due to that nice gesture, Otto feels somewhat indebted to Ricardo, swearing to himself that he'll one day repay the debt to him.

Felt Camp

Felt

When Otto first met Felt, he helped her bring down Heinkel, who was keeping her hostage to force Reinhard's hand, which she was grateful for. Later, when the two confronted Lye Batenkaitos together, although she seemed angered by his apparent willingness to give up his friends, she was impressed that he was able to trick their enemy long enough to attack him and buy time for Felt to temporarily escape. Otto also believes that if he weren't already in the Emilia Camp, then he would likely have joined her camp instead.

In Arc 9, when she informed Otto of the occurrence in the Pleiades Watchtower, he was grateful for the information, and the two began discussing how they were going to handle it.

Reinhard van Astrea

Though the two haven't much interacted, Otto recognizes just how incredibly strong he is. Also, when Reinhard found himself in trouble with his father and master, Otto was the one to help him out, and he made sure to take Reinhard along with him on their way to their active base in Priestella at the time and even defend him from everyone's frustrations with him.

Priscilla Camp

Priscilla Barielle

Although the two never interacted, Otto respected Priscilla, and he was somewhat saddened by her death.

Al

Although the two did not have any shown interactions, after Al kidnapped Subaru, he was angry with him and even refused to use his name. He also considered him dangerous and that he likely had a plan to handle everything in his way, including the Sword Saint, and began making preparations to handle him. In his fury, he even used his Divine Protection to ensure that Al and his party would not be able to get any rest after what he did in the Royal Capital, dropping boulders on them via thousands upon thousands of Zodda Bugs, claiming that he literally made an enemy of the entire world.

Lugunicans

Diadora Regundra

When he was younger, Otto antagonized Diadora when he called her out on seeing multiple men. In her anger, having been humiliated, she banished him from his homeland and used her influence to send an assassin after him. Though the assassination ultimately failed, this would leave Otto unable to return to Picoutatte for years. However, after Subaru and Rem ended up being flung to Vollachia, he would return to town and confront her, apologizing for his actions and pacifying her rage. In exchange for her help, he was asked to tell her about his older brother, as she had a crush on Oslo. In the end, his banishment was lifted, and she helped Otto and the Emilia Camp smuggle themselves into Vollachia.

Marone Lisbon

Marone and Otto are friends, which is seen in their interactions. Otto thinks of her as an admirably strong person and is shown to be protective of her. Marone is very grateful towards him, since he is the one who rescued her when she was captive in her hometown, Guineb, and also provided her with enough money to move out of the aforementioned city.

Despite knowing Otto only for a few days, Marone decided to discard her plan to move to Flanders, her originally preferred destination, in favor of settling in Pappelt, as she surmised that she would have a higher chance of meeting Otto again there.

Given that his younger brother, Regin, is romantically interested in Marone, Otto is willingly supporting of their relationship.

Imperial Army

Zikr Osman

Otto and Zikr respect each other, and thanks to mutual benefits, the two even worked together for a while. Throughout the camp’s stay in Vollachia, Otto and Zikr remained on friendly terms.

Vollachians

Serena Dracroy

Left behind to help defend Garkla against the undead hordes, the two would act as generals. They seem to have a rather friendly disposition with each other, and they’ve even commented positively on each other’s appearances. After successfully fending off the ambush unit, she even makes a statement that Otto is similar to her, greedy for victory, much to his dismay.

Witch Cult

Lye Batenkaitos

Otto would first run into the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony in Priestella. Knowing how dangerous he was, he attempted to negotiate with him in order to bring him to Subaru, who Lye wanted and who Otto knew was with Reinhard. Otto would start to feel a little pity for him, but this pity would cause negotiations to break down, and Lye would reveal his disdain for merchants. With combat ensued, Lye would find himself wanting to devour Otto’s name. When he saw Lye’s scars later during the battle, he also began wondering what he went through. However, he would find himself seeing red when Lye started mimicking Rem’s mannerisms, believing that Subaru should never see this, else he would break in an unrecoverable way.

Rui Arneb

Otto would first meet Rui following Lye’s initial defeat, where an attack she would release would shear off the front of his legs and leave him in agonizing pain. Naturally, he would hold a grudge against her that would spill over into his judgment of Spica.

Others

Spica

Due to his encounter with Rui, not to mention her bearing the same appearance and authority as a Sin Archbishop, Otto would view her harshly, believing she wasn’t worth being redeemed. If not for her being protected by people like Yorna and Medium, he would’ve even left her tied up without any freedom. Later, when Subaru would state his decision for what to do with Spica, Otto would be left incredibly frustrated, believing the girl should not be redeemed.
