Al/Relationships

Priscilla Camp

Priscilla Barielle

Although he was bribed to be with her, over time Aldebaran realized that he really wanted to protect her, and although he was often beaten by Priscilla, he continued to accompany her. He disliked it when Priscilla used his full name, getting unreasonably angry and snapping back at her. Despite that, he was perfectly willing to give his life for her safety and well-being, as shown when he apparently died 1000 times trying to convince her not to go to Vollachia and risk her safety. In the end, he gave in and accompanied her to the Empire.

When they were separated as the Great Disaster began, Al decided to stay behind in order to save her, trudging through pain in order to retrieve her. When they finally reunited, Al was elated to see her again. When he caught her midair, he received a strike to the head for being overbearing, yet when she referred to him by his full name, he didn’t snap at her and was fully prepared to fight beside her. She even raised his helmet to look at his face. After the fight was over, he, Priscilla, and Subaru sat atop the walls of Garkla to celebrate their victory, with Priscilla deciding to dance with Al to Subaru’s song as they drank alcohol together. That said, when she began to fade away, he held her tightly, claiming his love for her and not wanting her to disappear. He even urged Subaru to change fate to save her in his desperation. However, she would still fade away, congratulating Al for his deeds while also warning him that some people don’t want their fates to change, such as herself, and that he and Subaru would face many similar challenges and pains in the future.

Heinkel Astrea

The two seem to hold mutual respect for each other. However, in Arc 8, he would show that he had no qualms with using Heinkel as a sacrificial pawn if it was deemed necessary. Even when he decided he'd need Heinkel's assistance with his plan and dangled the promise of Dragon's blood in front of him, he is more than willing to shut the man up physically, and he has no problems with using him as a human shield, realizing his innate durability was off the charts. This being said, he considers Heinkel to be a decent person who could be nothing like the kind of deranged people he had seen, and after what happened in the Royal Capital in Arc 9, he made sure to reaffirm that he would give the Dragon's Blood to Heinkel after what happened with his father, and furthermore, of putting the Witch of Envy back in her place.

Schult

Schult and Al both care about each other, since Aldebaran suffers a lot when Priscilla hurts him.

Yae Tenzen

Although they were both originally members of the same camp and fought alongside Priscilla, the two came to blows when Al discovered her mission to slay Priscilla. Thanks to his Authority, he was able to overcome her, thoroughly instilling fear into her for the first time. Afterward, rather than killing her, he had her leave and reside elsewhere, showing no known interaction until the events of Arc 9.

As of Arc 9, Yae has shown to be willing to follow Al, devoting herself to helping him in his mission to "become himself" and settle the mission he has set for himself. She has even gone as far as to offer her body to him to help him relieve his mental exhaustion; though of course, Al has refused her offer many times. However, despite that, she has also made her intentions clear in that she wanted to assure his death with her own eyes, which Al showed no hostility against.

Al tends to take a rather stern approach to dealing with Yae, reining in her temper and actions with a fierce glare and scolding. That said, he does respect her strength, and the two are still shown to be somewhat friendly towards each other with their speech. At times, they are even shown to worry for each other, with Yae having shown visible relief after he returned from the events in the Royal Capital. Yae also finds Al's resolve and steadfast desire not to kill in spite of turning the world against him to be beautiful.

Emilia Camp

Natsuki Subaru

As fellow Japanese natives, the two often find it relatively easy to talk to each other, both understanding the same references and language. That said, due to his affiliation with Priscilla, Subaru would have difficulty trusting him at first. However, he would come to trust Al with time.

Al seems to have a strange understanding of Subaru. In Arc 5, Al would be the one to back up Subaru when regarding who should speak over the speakers to Priestella, informing the others that Subaru was not some Superman who could carry the burdens of everyone. Ironically, however, this would be what gave Subaru the courage to speak for the crowd. Al would warn him what this means, and by the time Subaru was done speaking, Al would be left in a strange mood.

Later, in Arc 7, when Subaru was struggling with how to handle Rem’s words, Al would stop him from busting his head open, and he would be the one to encourage Subaru to become a hero in her eyes again, even deciding to back up Subaru while he did so. He would also be extremely concerned for Subaru’s wellbeing after learning of Spica’s identity, not to mention the events of Chaosflame. Speaking of which, he seems to immediately realize that Subaru was in the center of the giant shadow, and later, he comments on Subaru being alive because the world hadn’t ended, teasing that he might know of his Authority.

In Arc 8, he would state his belief in Subaru being the hero the world needed, going out of his way to pave a road for his arrival. Where Subaru would be the one to save everyone, Al would be the one to dirty his hands. Cecilus, while traveling with Al, got the impression that he viewed himself as inferior to Subaru, and pointed out the contrast between his Boss's methods shining on the "stage" and Aldebaran's dirty methods of making everyone avert their eyes from. Later, Subaru would encourage Al to stand and fight with him in order to defeat the Great Disaster. After the fight was over, he danced with Priscilla to Subaru’s song in celebration of their victory. That said, when Priscilla began to disappear, Al pleaded with Subaru to save her, showing once again that he knows about Subaru’s Authority.

In Arc 9, he continued to act friendly towards Subaru and thanked him for taking him to read Priscilla’s Book of the Dead, but shortly after arriving, he trapped him within Ol Shamak, and he declared that he would not fight on his battlefield. He would act on the original purpose that he was given that he had once abandoned: removing Subaru from the world. In order to do this, he intended to take him to Kararagi and drop him in the Grand Mogolade Geyser. Furthermore, as the arc dragged on, Al showed extreme hostility and aggression towards Subaru, to the point that upon seeing Emilia's Ice Soldiers being modeled after him, he showed zero hesitation over destroying them, and he showed disgust at just how faithful her soldiers replicated him, down to their fragility and their tendency to revive even after their destruction.

Emilia

Al would first talk to Emilia in Arc 5 over a pair of Communication Mirrors. Al would state his concern over Emilia’s actions, but Emilia would trust Al to get her message to Subaru. After their short conversation, Emilia would find herself being reminded of Subaru when talking to Al, though she wouldn’t understand why. Before this, however, during a joint meeting between the Priscilla and Al, Anastasia and Julius, and the reporter Shorty Megan, Al would stand up for Emilia when the others would talk negatively about her.

After Priscilla's death, although Emilia was worried about him and allowed him to go to the Pleiades Watchtower with Subaru, after he betrayed Subaru and sealed him and Beatrice, he managed to enrage the usually kind Emilia, and she mercilessly clashed with him, intending to bring him down quickly and claiming that with as angry as she was, she wouldn't hold back against him at all. Although Al wanted to try and speak with her and convince her to leave, she refused to talk as much as possible. When she noticed that he seemed lonely as they fought, she told him to stop looking away. During their battle, it is stated that Emilia is a person who is both a natural enemy to him and one who easily disturbs his mental stability, and she is a person that he does not want to hurt. As such, despite what he was doing, he did not want to see her cry.

Beatrice

Al acts extremely familiar and friendly with Beatrice and calls her Beako, despite her only allowing Subaru to do so. He has done so several times and has refused to correct the habit. Despite this, he had no issue with sealing her alongside Subaru in Arc 9, believing her to be a dangerous threat.

Rem and Ram

Al seems to be acquainted with Ram as he mistook Rem for her older sister during the third failed loop of Arc 3. Throughout their following short interaction, Al expressed his shock at realizing he was speaking with Ram's sister, indicating he only knew of her existence and not of Rem's. Soon after, he turned extremely hostile though managing to contain himself in mere seconds. After Rem and Subaru departed from Priscilla's manor, Al seemed to have gained somewhat of a grasp on the situation; a situation that made him want to vomit. During the events of Arc 9, upon regaining his memories of her, he recalls that she should not have still been alive.

Conversely, in Ram's Flirting Refusal, Al encountered Ram while she was searching for Emilia in Arc 1, displaying a familiar and friendly disposition towards her throughout their brief encounter, much to her annoyance. Curiously, he also knew Ram's name and uttered it to her in passing before they parted ways, which evoked confusion in the latter as she recalls that she never introduced herself to him.

Garfiel Tinzel

Al would first meet Garfiel when the boy was searching for the missing Subaru in Arc 5, with him mistaking Al’s scent for Subaru. Garfiel would be openly distrusting of Al in City Hall, and during the talks of who should speak to the people of Priestella, Garfiel would end up angered when Al said that Subaru couldn’t do it. However, Al would point out that Garfiel’s habit of calling him Boss wouldn’t make him some superhero who could solve any issue, causing Garfiel distress as he was telling him of the pressure Subaru was being put under.

Later, although Garfiel does not seem to bear a grudge against him, Al made enemies of Garfiel after sealing away Subaru, angering him and failing to defeat him numerous times. In the end, he severely injured Garfiel, and the boy’s hostility towards him remains.

Clind

Though Clind and Al apparently first met in Arc 9, when he saw Clind, Al seemed to recognize the man, though he decided to act as if he met him for the first time.

Petra Leyte

Al spoke with Petra on friendly terms, and she was willing to help him search for the Book of the Dead that he was looking for. However, when he sealed Subaru and Beatrice, then used the severely injured Garfiel and Ezzo to cover his escape, she cried and asked him why he would do such a thing, calling him a coward as he left her behind. During their confrontation, when he saw the bravery in her eyes and words, Al noticed that she, like the other women that surround Subaru, were strong yet crazy. He also acknowledged that seeing her in tears and proclaiming her resentment towards him hurt him more deeply than any of the deaths he experienced.

Meili Portroute

He and Meili were also somewhat friendly, though she became hostile to him after his actions in the Pleiades Watchtower.

Frederica Baumann

Al considers Frederica and her rare blood to be dangerous, and he believed that convincing her to be elsewhere when he started his plans in Arc 9 was crucial.

Patrasche

Like with the others, Patrasche stood in Al’s way during his escape from the tower. Though she could do nothing to stop him due to his possession of Volcanica, she stood ready to challenge him.

Felt Camp

Felt

Though he was already aware that she was an impressive candidate for the throne, especially with Priscilla considering her as a worthy rival, he truly saw her as a dangerous individual when she gathered a small army to clash against him and interrupt his plans. Al also saw her dangerous when she displayed a semi-command over the Divine Dragon, and though he didn't want her to die, he did not show any issue with using her as a hostage when she offered it to protect those who followed her. Even after this though, he made sure that she was properly fed as he was working on his plan. Following the events in the Royal Capital, however, their relationship further deteriorated, with Felt being disgusted by his dropping boulders atop the Royal Capital and leaving it for Emilia to clean up.

Reinhard van Astrea

Although the two hadn’t spoken for most of the series, when Reinhard confronted Al in the Augria Sand Dunes, Al looked at him with hostility and claimed that he would still win in the end, even against the most powerful man in the world. Although he did ultimately fail to defeat the man with his own power, he still managed to land devastating blows to him, physically and mentally. When Reinhard still requested that he stand down, Al cornered him by claiming his father was his hostage, bringing hesitation to the young man. Afterward, Reinhard was shocked that Al would even summon the Witch of Envy to hold him back, and despite wanting to stop Al, Reinhard was forced to confront Satella instead.

Ezzo Cadner

Although the two initially got along, with Ezzo even respecting his wishes despite it going against the wishes of his dead master, Ezzo had no qualms in bringing down Al when he started his plan in the tower. Ezzo also wished to know the meaning behind Al's actions. After their short confrontation, Ezzo was able to somewhat understand Al’s Authority, and he considered him a threat equivalent to a Sin Archbishop or a Witch. Ultimately, Al left him behind heavily injured and used those injuries to escape.

Flam Remendis

Though he had no problems with Flam, when he started his plans in the tower, she had no issue with breaking his neck or piercing through his body. He ultimately left her pinned to the wall and held in place, though he underestimated her by being unaware of her crucial Divine Protection.

Rom

Though he seems to be aware of his past, after coming face to face with the old giant, he began to see him as significantly more dangerous than even Reinhard, as Rom managed to almost completely pin down Al with an immense amount of planning and traps, nearly completely guess Al's Authority, and even led him to behaving just as he wanted. After the Witch, Valga is the first peson to hand Al a complete defeat.

Rachins Hoffman

Al was impressed by Rachins's tenacity and willingness to sacrifice himself to complete his goal, and he was reluctant to beat the man near to death to prevent him from getting in the way.

Imperial Family

Vincent Vollachia

Like Priscilla does, Vincent often refers to Al as a clown. Meanwhile, Al neither thinks positively nor negatively of the emperor, and he has no qualms with talking to him casually. During their trip to Chaosflame, Al would act as a guard to Vincent and Subaru. Later, upon returning from the confrontation with Yorna, when Al mentioned taking advantage of being “rewarded” for something he’d done in the past, Vincent would recall this and state that he would properly reward Al once the Imperial Coup was handled, and Al would not be able to get out of it this time.

When Al lost his Authority and his ability to fight, he would become increasingly aggressive and frustrated and when his despair seeped into him, he couldn’t even properly stand up for himself. This behavior exhibited by Al during this time left Vincent to refer to this as his true nature and is left disappointed. That said, he did find it strange upon hearing his reaction to the massive shadow, as if he recognized it. Later, when Al got his body back to normal, Vincent would disparage and question if he could do anything, having seen his breakdown before.

Nine Divine Generals

Cecilus Segmunt

Al and the infantilized Blue Lightning would temporarily team up during the Great Disaster. Al would often find himself annoyed with Cecilus’s antics, especially so when Al was left hanging off of the side of a building and left to just die. However, Al also recognized his strength as something necessary. Later, the two would fight together against Arakiya, who would be suffering under the effects of having devoured more of Muspel. Thanks to Al, Cecilus would manage to defeat Arakiya, sacrificing his own sword to do so.

Cecilus seems to realize Al’s power to a certain extent based on his intuition and Al’s behavior, referring to it as “True Sight,” like with Subaru’s. Furthermore, he would also compare Al to Subaru, though he would point out their differing methods.

Arakiya

Al and Arakiya crossed paths roughly 7 years before the start of the main story, during the gladiator upbringing that took place on the gladiator island Al was situated at. Upon first meeting Al, Arakiya expressed her interest in his face, stating it "wasn't bad". The two were forced to form a short alliance in order to fight another gladiator by the name of Hornet, who was guarding the drawbridge which connected the island with the mainland and was preventing the Imperial Army from entering the island and subduing the uprising. After their fight, Al expressed his immense happiness for finally being able to save a beautiful silver haired girl, as he once already had the chance to do so but failed.

However, the two would be forced to point their weapons at each other when they met again in Guaral in Arc 7. Though he and Priscilla managed to bring her down, Al would be disappointed to have to come to blows with her after all this time. Even more unfortunately, Al would be forced to fight her again in the following arc, assisting Cecilus to bring down the suffering girl.

Olbart Dunkelkenn

The two would initially meet in Ginunhive, when Al would help quash a rebellion. Because of this, Olbart offered to take him to be rewarded, but Al would refuse the offer. This was a time before Al donned his helmet, so Olbart is, in fact, one of the few people who knows Al’s face.

The two would meet again in Arc 7 while on opposing sides of the Imperial Coup. When in a meeting with Yorna, Al would take advantage of his acquaintanceship with the Vicious Old Man in order to bring up an old reward from helping in Ginunhive. The two would be forced to come to blows shortly thereafter, leaving Olbart impressed by his unknown “trick.” Though Al’s group would escape, they would feel the effects of his infantilization technique on them the next day, leaving Al feeling helpless as he had lost his Authority. Later, despite his increased aggression and despair, he would plead with Olbart to revert him back to regain his Authority. It is unlikely that they are on friendly terms, but as of yet, it is to be seen.

Groovy Gumlet

The two would meet during the Great Disaster, where they would be forced to work together. Al and Groovy seem to get along rather well in spite of Groovy’s constant cursing, with the latter even apologizing for jumping to the top of a building and leaving Al on the ground. Ultimately, Al would entrust the handling of Eugard Vollachia to the hyena-man.

Vollachians

Hornet

Due to his continued ability to win numerous fights in Ginunhive, he had gained Hornet’s interest, and she wished to fight against him. She eventually got what she wanted during the rebellion on Ginunhive, but he allowed her to die with poison unceremoniously after sparing enough time for allies to arrive.

Witches

Echidna

While the relationship between these two and when they met is unknown, Al calls Echidna his teacher. She has taught him the secret spell, Ol Shamak, gave him an incredible amount of magical knowledge, and she has apparently taught him other things. That said, she also seems to have given him some kind of task that he has failed once before, and she even claimed to have lost any interest or expectations for Al because of this.

In the present, he seems to bear a severe hostility towards the idea of seeing her alive. In Arc 8, when Sphinx descended before him in the form of the Witch of Greed, Al recognized her as the said witch, formed a stone version of his destroyed sword on the spot, and charged to attack her, all the while screaming Echidna’s name before realizing she was not his teacher. Despite this, they once seemed to be able to speak to each other in a somewhat carefree and even playful manner, and he apparently seemed to be unable to fully hate her.

In the past, when he told Arakiya that he had changed her fate, he lamented the fact that he mentioned it by saying that his teacher would yell at him for stating what he did.[1]

Satella

It is heavily implied that Al knows Satella personally. In Sunlight Illuminating the Water's Surface, Al encounters an illusion of a shadowy figure wearing a shadowy dress, which Al was unable to bring himself to harm even though he tried some 100,000,000 million times. Unable to do anything, he was gripped with fear and tried to retreat as it attempted to touch him lovingly with its fingers. Fortunately, Priscilla destroyed it with her Yang Sword, yet this caused him to be filled with rage, though she easily dealt with him by smacking his helmet with her sword. Although he was still scared somewhat, he was relieved that the shadowy figure was fake.

In The Sword Wolf of the Scintillating Flame, Al states that at some point in his life, a beautiful silver haired girl appeared before him when he was about to die. He also states that silver hair brings him bad memories about how a "trash, stupid useless person he is" due to how he failed to save the one he cherishes the most.

Satella still terrifies Al in the present day. Upon seeing the overwhelming mass of shadows bursting forth from the Crimson Lapis Castle in Chaosflame, Al screamed in terror, not knowing why she was there. That said, when he regained his body’s proper size and his Authority, he was willing to help in the fight against it.

According to Al, Satella will continue to completely ignore Al, and because she hates him to an extreme extent, not once have their eyes met.

Sphinx

At first, Al attacked her while mistaking her for his old master. However, he would come to realize that she was a fraud who attempted to bear the same appearance and title as the witch. That said, he recognizes how unbelievably dangerous she is, so much so that he resorted to magics and techniques not seen in use on any other enemy.

Meanwhile, while Sphinx was already aware of Al’s existence through Priscilla, he wouldn’t garner her interest until he called out the name of her creator. As such, she would attempt to draw out this knowledge from the man as they fought. After he defeated her, he would grow more and more frustrated by her words as she claimed him to be similar to her.

Witch Cult

Capella Emerada Lugunica

The two would meet underneath City Hall in Priestella. Impressed with the trap, Capella would engage in combat with the man, and even find his actions odd, hearing him speak of things as if he had prior knowledge. Because of this, combined with his brutality against her, she would find Al interesting. During the fight, Capella would tease him by transforming herself closer and closer to Priscilla’s image, using the slightest hints of Al’s behavior to do so. Unfortunately, Al could not land a decisive blow against her, and she was able to escape.

Roy Alphard

Al despises Roy, and if not for his necessity in his plan, he would gladly throw him off of the Great Waterfall. Despite this, Al was responsible for freeing Roy out of his seal and imprisonment, and after a grueling fight with Roy, he placed an oath bound curse mark on him. Al also finds his excessing chatting to be annoying.

Others

Volcanica

In Arc 9, Al used his own personal Book of the Dead to take control of the mentally fragmented Divine Dragon, and the two “Als” escaped from the tower together.

Spica

At first, he would find Spica’s attachment to Subaru rather entertaining if not odd, even becoming curious of why Subaru was so wary of her. Though she seemed not to like him. Later, however, when he learned of her identity as a Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, his rage would peak at her, and he was even willing to cut her head off right then and there. Following the events in Chaosflame, he would decide not to harm her for Subaru’s sake, though he would remain extremely wary of her.
