Prisoner Number 459: Natsuki Subaru

Subaru, Emilia, and Rem visited the capitol to watch a performance from a famous theater. The three of them, including Puck, expressed themselves on the performance and the three of them intend to stay the inn for the night. They went to their rooms, but Subaru quickly got out of his room to think about how should he spend the night with Emilia. While he was thinking, a guard came up to him and wants to talk to him about the Royal Selection. They walked to the alley and have their private conversation. Before they could continue, someone screamed for help. Subaru tells the guard to call for help while he heads towards the source. He saw Otto, frightened, and in front of them, he saw a dead body. Subaru takes out the knife from the corpse, until both Subaru and Otto were captured and arrested by the guards for under the suspicion of murder. Subaru questions the guard that was looking for help, but the other guard doesn't understand what he was talking about. Subaru and Otto tried to explain what happened, but the guards wouldn't listen and they were given prisoner garb, brown shoes, and a collar, and was sent to Gilmour Prison. The is filled with horrible criminals, most of them were demi-humans, and throws insults towards the two of them. They were thrown into their cell when suddenly, instead of Otto joining Subaru in the same cell, a prisoner called "Prisoner 231" joins the cell with him. Subaru tries to introduce himself, but Prisoner 231 doesn't want to exchange names and he prefers to call him as "231". They look at their daily listings: a bath every three days and soap provided every 2 months. Suddenly, they heard a bell tolled, meaning it's time for work.

A day had passed and they head to the cafeteria. A prisoner tries to take Subaru's food, but he decides to fight back. But before he could, 231 tells them to silence while he's eating and the prisoner calls him "big brother". 231 punches him as he tells him that he has to follow the rules of the prison. Before he could hit Subaru again, someone interjected the fight. Surprisingly, Subaru and Otto are unaware, that Ricardo is also in the prison as well. He was surprised that Subaru is in the same prison as him and 231 calls him a "newcomer that joined yesterday", the same day as Subaru and Otto joined. Ricardo breaks up the fight and 231 leaves them. After he left, to yet another surprise, Hetaro and Tivey are in with Ricardo as well. Otto and Subaru explained what happened. Tivey assumes that the guard was a part of a criminal gang. Subaru is worried that he left Emilia without warning, but at least relieved that he has people he knows in this prison. He asked Ricardo why he's here in the first place. Ricardo couldn't remember what happened as he explained he was too drunk to remember. Hetaro says that Mimi was in a shop with Anastasia, so Tivey acts as her replacement. They hoped that either Anastasia or Roswaal would free them, but for now, they have to survive.

After reunited with Ricardo, Tivey, and Hetaro, both Emilia and Rem visited Subaru. They encourage him with Emilia drawing Subaru and Rem making sweets for him. Emilia explained that Roswaal and Ram notified the situation and figuring out to free him would take some time. Emilia asked if after Subaru gets out, where would he want to go. And Subaru replied that he wants to make her a large place. Days later, Rem visits him. Rem brought out a picture book that she'll like to go to the beach once he's free. The bell tolls, marking the end of visiting hours. Rem was disappointed that she didn't get much time she needed, but Subaru said to her that he'll survive no matter the cost. It had been six days since they were sent to prison. Ricardo was worried that brought the Pearlbatons along with him and he would've broken out of prison if it weren't for the collars. Subaru asked about the collars and the Pearlbatons explained that the collars have some sort of mechanism that the collars will shock the person who wears them if they go out of line. It had been a whole week since Subaru was sent to prison. Subaru couldn't bare himself to stay any longer. 231 tells him to be quiet and he must follow the rules that he was told. Subaru asked what if he doesn't want to and 231 punches him hard. This caused them to make so much noise that the guard was called and shocks them. Then, he was thrown into a small and cramped room the Punishment Cell. A couple of hours had passed and he heard someone scream. Then, the collar shocks him intensely. He realizes that someone was watching him as he was torturing him. The collar continues to shock him over and over, until suddenly...Subaru was killed in the Punishment Cell.

After being killed by an unknown person, he loops back to the fourth day to where Emilia and Rem visit him. Subaru suddenly became paranoid when his Return by Death spawned him to this point. He tries to figure out who was the person that was watching him and killed him, but he couldn't recall anyone who had a grudge on him. Now that Return by Death was activated, his work from his previous loop reset. After he finished his work, he summarizes and collects his thoughts on who killed him. Subaru looked at 231 and 408 who was talking to a guard who was saying that 408 caught a fever. He starts to suspect that it could be either one of the guards or one of the prisoners. After he had finished working, he went to his cell with 231. He asks how did he get sent to prison in the first place, but 231 didn't like to talk about it and he's just 231, no more and no less. After having a conversation with 231, Subaru didn't think that it was him that killed him. He begins to wonder who killed him if it wasn't 231.

The seventh day begins again, and this time, to his surprise, Ram had visited Subaru this time instead of Rem. Ram told him that there's a problem in the capital, and because of that, they have to do a re-investigation. After the visit, time had passed and it's already night, the night where Subaru was killed. Subaru thinks about who could be the culprit, but he still got no answers. The prison guard approached the cell and forces Subaru to go to the Punishment Cell, despite that he hadn't caused any trouble. He questions himself why the outcome is the same but the situation is different this time. The mysterious man begins to watch Subaru as the collar begins to shock him. Enduring the pain, the guard opens the door and stabs Subaru with a knife, thus killing him.

He looped back again to the fourth day, only this time, he now knows who was the culprit who killed him. He thought back and recollect his thoughts and assumes that both the events in the capitol and the prison are somehow connected. Subaru asked both Emilia and Rem to find the body of the victim who was killed that night, which they accepted and began the investigation. After a while Rem, along with Ram by her, returned to Subaru with information about the victim. He learned that he was a conservative aristocrat named Count Keor. Apparently, Keor was the one who brings balance to the Royal Selection. But since everyone assumes Subaru had killed a politician, this puts Emilia at a huge disadvantage in the campaign. Rem sends him some sweets as visiting hours came to an end.

Having learned that Subaru got in the way of political conflict, he tried to think of a way of how to avoid his death before the 7th day happens with only a three day limit. 231 noticed a smell of sweets that Rem gave to Subaru and gave details of it. It appears that 231 used to bake in his past life before he was sent to prison. Subaru decides to give him the food and he recalls the time when he used to bake in his hometown. Subaru then gives the sweets to 231 and became a little bit friendly towards him. After working, the prisoners approached Subaru, only this time, 231 intervene without the help of either Otto or Ricardo. His attitude towards Subaru changed and tells him to get stronger.

The seventh night begins once more. Ricardo and the Pearlbatons approached to Subaru and Otto and offers meat to them, meanwhile, Otto feeds the food to a mouse. This gave a strange look to the others. The mouse ran away from Otto and caused havoc in the cafeteria. Before Subaru and others could sneak out, a man in a suit appears in the cafeteria, who is the director of Gilmour Prison, Director Godrov, halted the fight. Noticed Ricardo's lively voice, this sets Godrov to turn the cafeteria into an arena to have a mock battle and chose Subaru and Ricardo to fight against each other. Godrov noticed that Ricardo is also a member of Anastasia's faction and a member of the Iron Fang, and tells Ricardo if he wins, he'll shorten his sentence. Ricardo takes up the fight and in an instant, Subaru was already knocked out by just one hit from Ricard and he tells the director that he won't betray Subaru's trust. This got Godrov mad as he left the cafeteria. After the fight, Subaru drew connections that both Godrov and the murder of Keor are somehow related. This puts a plan into motion as both Otto and Ricardo give information to their members. 231 described Godrov a cruel man as he had dealt with him before. Then, the prisoner guard approached the cell where Subaru and 231 were and defends Subaru this time. As he was about to survive the seventh night, a scream can be heard from the next cell. Director Godrov arrived and begins to kill the prisoners with a crossbow. Their death screams can be heard from their cells and no matter how much Subaru tried to cover his ears, he can still hear them. As Godrov fired his arrow to Subaru, 231 takes the hit instead and killed him. Then, Godrov shocks Subaru with the collar and killed him.

Subaru restarts again with his fourth loop in Gilmour Prison. He now starts to take the initiative and plans to start a jailbreak before the seventh day comes. He approached 231 and brought up the idea of a jailbreak and he would think that he had a history of jailbreaks before. 231 confessed that there had been attempts, but none of them were successful. Both Subaru and 231 thought of a plan of how to escape.

After Subaru approached 231 with an idea of a jailbreak, Rem and Ram visited Subaru. They gave a little bit of information about Keor and the Duke of Iglesia, named Rudar Iglesia, to Subaru. He suspected that he's the culprit behind the murderer of Keor, but it doesn't seem to be the case as it could be difficult to suspect him as one. He went to 231 with the information he got from Rem and Ram. Even with the information that Subaru told him, he'll not participate in the jailbreak and he'll die to the end. He also told Subaru about Rudgar's past that he was involved with the slaughter plan. Since Subaru is involved with political conflict, this makes him a target as the Duke of Iglesia intends to kill all witnesses in the prison. After their conversation, he talks to the others with the information he got and plans for a jailbreak. Subaru asked for either of them had any experience with a prison break. Obviously, Otto had no experience of any of that, but Ricardo did have experience as he recalled back in his time when he was a slave with Reisel and brought up the idea to dog a hole that connects to the sewers. Otto became concerned when it comes to how much time they need to dig. Ricardo doesn't have enough time to find a detour and both Tivey and Hetaro couldn't make a sketch of the blueprint. However, Subaru didn't need the blueprint as he is confident that they'll manage to escape. He told 231 with the information he has, however, 231 points out three problems: concealing the hole, the key to the prison, and the collars. Subaru had planned out each and every problem that he mentioned and he counts on 231 to cooperate with him.

Three days left before the massacre starts. A prison guard oversees Subaru and other prisoners exercising. The guard suggested they should stop, but Godrov told him to let them be. While they're exercising, Subaru sees 231 pushing the other prisoners to their limits. Later, Tivey and Hetaro told Subaru that he found some paint in the warehouse that they could use for camouflage. And with Otto's Divine Protection of Soul Language, he was able to talk with moles to dig a hole for them. Subaru asks Otto if the mouse could steal the key from the guard, to which he could, but he would need something to duplicate it. Subaru came up with an idea if they could use the soap to make to duplicate the key.

On the second day of the plan, Subaru and the other prisoners begin exercising again. Godrov couldn't shake the feeling about what is their endgame. And with that, he noticed something was suspicious. Their plan was set and Ricardo suggests they'll plan their escape tonight. Before Subaru escapes, he said to 231 that he'll treat him with Talutes once he'll get him out soon. Subaru and the others made their way underground and into the sewers. Ricardo yells out that it smells horrible in the sewers, to which Subaru had pinned the blame on Otto for entering the sewers raw without giving a warning about the smell. The smell becomes more rancid as they delve deeper into the sewers. Then, they saw the light and heard rain from the other side of the sewers and have finally made it out of the sewers. After the rain stopped, they had begun to realize that their escape was far from over as they began to realize that the prison is surrounded by a lake. Subaru and others were surrounded by the guards and Godrov appears in front of them as he knew they would escape and activated their shock collars and shocks Otto while Ricardo and the Pearlbatons fight the guards. Godrov told Subaru that he knew they were planning to escape from the start. Then, Subaru asks him about the Duke of Iglesia, which sets off Godrov as he knows about it and he dives into the lake. Before Subaru could swim for his life, Godrov shocks him, but Subaru continues to swim to get to the other side. Before he could get to the other side, a Water Dragon surfaces from the lake, and realized that his life soon came to an end when the Water Dragon ate Subaru alive.

After having his body and soul devoured by a Water Dragon, he returned to the fourth day, but after experiencing this horrible death, he loses consciousness and was sent back to his cell. He asked 231 if he knows about Water Dragons. He explained that they are violent and dangerous creatures, unlike Ground Dragons. Not only that Subaru has to worry about escaping Grimour Prison and from Godrov's clutches, but also avoiding getting killed by the Water Dragon. He asked 231 if he knows about Rudar Iglesia, to which it caught him off guard when he asked him about that. It was revealed that 231 was Zelga Iglesia, Rudar's older brother. He tells him that betraying their own relatives was not unusual and announced publicly that Zelga was killed, which makes Rudar the new ruler of House Iglesia. Subaru now knows the reason why 231--who was Zelga--decided to stay. He also had another brother who, unlike Rudar, was a high-ranking but a kind man. But due to his death, the House of Iglesia was slowly collapsing. Subaru tells him to take back what he lost, which sets him and Zelga to a heated argument and punches Subaru. After hearing Zelga's past, Subaru had started to realize that Rudar was planning a coup d'etat against the Kingdom of Lugunica. Their conversation came to an end as Zelga thoughts to himself for guidance.

The next day, as both Emilia and Rem came to visit Subaru, they see him covered with bruises. He calms them down as he didn't want to worry them. He asked them to look up info about Rudar, and also asked both Emilia and Rem if they could go on a vacation once he gets out. Subaru tells the others about the plan for a jailbreak and the massacre, which sends a heavy weight in the air as they couldn't believe what they heard. Otto asked why is he involved if he, unlike both Subaru and Ricardo, didn't join with either of the political camps, to which Subaru told him that the timing was unexpected, but Rudar thought that he sees him as a witness. They all agreed to the jailbreak plan, but the things that they're concerned about are the keys to the cell and the collars. But Subaru explained that there's one more problem: the prison is surrounded by a lake and protected by the Water Dragon. This leaves Subaru with one idea he had in mind: capturing the Water Dragon.

Otto told Subaru that the hole they dig was a success, however, Ricardo said what they lack was both manpower and time. And with only two days they had left, they don't have enough time for both exercise and reinforcements. However, Zelga and the rest of the prisoners approached to Subaru and decides to join them on the jailbreak. And with that, they commence the true jailbreak plan into full force.

The prison guard noticed there's a bridge made of ice and alerts the prison. When the guard caught up, he only see Otto, Tivey, and Hetaro. Then, Otto suddenly jumped into the lake. Another alarm rang, and from there, the true plan came to fruition and Ricardo knocks out the guard. Subaru, Ricardo, and Zelga, and the rest of the prisoners head towards the main gate, but before they could, Ricardo, with his fast reflex and instincts, quickly saved Subaru by catching the arrow that was flying towards him from Godrov's attack. Subaru made a suggestion that he'll take the first action. Ricardo was unsure that his idea is a good idea, but he went along with it as Godrov shocks Subaru and the other prisoners, and accidentally shocks himself. Ricardo quickly retrieved the remote and bites off Godrov's arm off. They then grabbed the keys of their collars and frees themselves. They have reached outside of the prison and they can see the bridge, but before they could get across, the bridge was raised in front of them. Subaru jumps off the bridge only for the guards to see him standing on the water. The Water Dragon, along with Otto, Hetaro, and Tivey, resurface from the water. Everyone started to jump on the Water Dragon and successfully escapes the prison. Ricardo asks to Zelga does he have any regrets, to which, Zelga responded that he felt guilty with his past. Ricardo gave a little word of encouragement and they both escaped. After being freed from Gilmour Prison and bringing the captured Godrov, they met up with Emilia and Rem, who was the one that created the ice bridge to create a diversion.

With the success of escaping Grimour Prison and having all the evidence that Subaru has, he and everyone heads to the Capitol and clear their charges. They interrupted the meeting and explains to everyone, including the Council of Elders and Royal Candidates. Zelga tells everyone that he's the missing king of the Iglesia, but Rudar pretends to act that Zelga is pretending to be someone else. Then, as Zelga reveals himself as the blue light surrounds him. Crusch calls it "The Engravement of the Blue Flame" that had passed down from the Iglesia family for generations. After revealing that Zelga isn't dead, Rudar and Godrov were arrested, Grimour Prison was temporarily closed, and Subaru, Otto, Ricardo, and everyone that were captured were proved of their innocence and cleared their name. Along with it, Zelga took over and regained the House of Iglesia.

Subaru, Emilia, and Rem took a vacation at the beach with tropical drinks. They see a baby Water Dragon on the shore, and as Subaru was about to pet it, the adult Water Dragon hits him and lands into the water.
