Heinkel Astrea/Relationships

Family

Louanna Astrea

Heinkel loves his wife. In order to cure his wife, Heinkel was prepared to do anything, even if it meant going out of his way to the Barielle Domain and slaughter an entire camp of bandits, as he had heard rumours of a meteor which can heal any illness, if a person drinks from it (though the cup turned out to be a fake, and was only capable of turning alcohol into a drug that numbs the pain). He even verbally abuses Garitch Fabless for not being able to heal her. He later admits that his wife is unable to be healed and buries his sorrow in alcohol. Heinkel wishes to wake her by any means necessary, going so far as to betray Lugunica, even if he knows it means she would inevitably despise him for all of his actions.

Reinhard van Astrea

Heinkel loved his son greatly, and he treated him like a treasure without ever getting angry at him, doing whatever he had to do in order to keep his son by his side, including telling him not to use a power he had obtained so that he would not be targeted by people as deadly as the Six Tongues. Later, after the death of his mother, he even told off Wilhelm for publicly blaming Reinhard for her death, and he claimed that he would prove that the loss of her Divine Protection to Reinhard was not the cause of her death. After this, their relationship began to fall apart, with Heinkel gradually pulling away from his son and neglecting him. Signs of this strain were evident when Heinkel spoke to Reinhard about his promotion to Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard, which he suspected was Reinhard's doing. Though he denied it and told him that he could use the position for his wife, afterward, Heinkel told him to join the knights when he became of age, and after he did, he stopped calling him by his name.

In Arc 5, when he met with his father and son again, Heinkel interrupted their heartwarming time together, claiming that the Astrea family did not deserve peace. Towards the end of the arc, when Reinhard was forced to slay the revived corpse, Heinkel claimed that he would ruin the Sword Saint's reputation. However, Heinkel has still shown to be concerned for his son's safety. In Arc 9, when Al revealed that Reinhard was engaging in a battle with the Witch of Envy, Heinkel became severely agitated and concerned, and he did not relax until Al assured him that Satella would not devour Reinhard, showcasing that his love for his son has not truly diminished despite his attitude towards him. Furthermore, after stabbing his father, when the man stated that his actions would not sway Reinhard's decision to remain the Sword Saint, those words hurt him greatly.

Wilhelm van Astrea

Wilhelm loves his son, and by Heinkel's own thoughts, he knew that he was loved. In his youth, Wilhelm believed that Heinkel would be the beloved by the sword, and he was even responsible for training him. Despite this, this training alongside Heinkel's fear of combat led the two to having a somewhat strained relationship. However, after Theresia died in the Great Conquest, the strain in their relationship became even worse. After Wilhelm publicly blamed Reinhard for his wife's death, Heinkel confronted him and claimed that he had no right to apologize, keeping him away from Reinhard and intending to prove that his suddenly obtaining the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint was not responsible for Theresia's death.

When they met again in Priestella, Heinkel told him off for his actions, showing that the strain between them had not lessened. Still, he retains some parental love for his son, pleading in vain to the resurrected Theresia to not to kill their son. Later, when Al started his scheme, Heinkel's involvement was one of the main reasons that he took action, and as a result, Wilhelm and Heinkel became enemies, with Wilhelm becoming frustrated that Heinkel took such an action, even if it was for his wife. During Wilhelm's fight against the Divine Dragon, despite Volcanica's overwhelming advantage, Heinkel could not unsee Wilhelm's victory, which led him to sorrowfully stab his father in the back while crying. Despite this, he did not want Wilhelm to die, and after Wilhelm pulled his body off of the blade and fell to his knees, Heinkel attempted to help him, only for the man to tell him to wake up, that his actions would not affect Reinhard's decision to be the Sword Saint, something which hurt him greatly.

Theresia van Astrea

Heinkel loved his mother and thought fondly of her. When she died during the whale hunt fourteen years prior to the story’s beginning, Heinkel would be heartbroken, and her death would fracture the family tremendously. In fact, it would be after her death that he would begin blaming Reinhard.

When he saw the corpse soldier of her, he would freeze up and call out to her, even as she pointed her sword against him. However, Reinhard would bring her down for good, which would cause the family greater problems.

Priscilla Camp

Priscilla Barielle

Priscilla encountered Heinkel sometime between Arcs 4 and 5, when Heinkel slaughtered an entire camp full of bandits, in order to retrieve the aforementioned Meteor which was said to have magical properties and could heal any illness one had, just by drinking for it (naturally, the cup did not hold such magical properties, but rather, was capable of turning any beverage into a drug that numbs all the pain). As Priscilla was about to kill him, Heinkel suggested she should accept him into her Camp, as he knew of a way to dispose of his son's mistress. In return, he wanted the Dragon's Blood, which would surely bring Louanna back to life. Following that day, Heinkel joined Priscilla Camp and started acting as another one of Priscilla's swords. However, it should be noted that Heinkel often got on her nerves, to the point that she has nearly killed him.

Due to their positions of using each other in the Royal Selection, Heinkel, despite allying with her, did not show loyalty to her. However, he did not doubt her position as a person who could become the country's monarch, and he believed that she really could be the one who would sit on the throne.

Al

Al and Heinkel mutually respect each other (at least somewhat), and Al even complimented Heinkel's skill with the sword. Al also usually takes Schult's side, when Heinkel showers the young boy with insults. In Arc 8, however, Al showed that he would have no qualms in using the man as a sacrificial pawn if it was deemed necessary, as he did by sending him into an obvious trap. In Arc 9, Heinkel begrudgingly agrees to become Al's hostage and accomplice in exchange for Volcanica's Dragon Blood to use in order to save his wife. However, their alliance between strained when Al revealed that in order to impede Reinhard from following them, he had summoned the Witch of Envy to battle him, which had infuriated Heinkel. Likewise, Al showed no hesitation to physically shut him up or use him as a human shield. That said, after seeing Al overcome odds which should have been impossible, Heinkel was left astonished.

Schult

Heinkel can be seen caring about Schult, perhaps even considering him something close to a son–a son without any special powers. Though, despite that, he's overly harsh with him, to the point Priscilla had to threaten Heinkel to stop, otherwise she'd lob his head off.

Yae Tenzen

Heinkel and Yae do not get along with each other, and they bicker regularly. Yae has even proposed leaving him behind.

Emilia Camp

Emilia

Heinkel does not seem to have either a positive or negative stance on Emilia. In fact, following Priscilla’s death, while he was considerably drunk, he even asked to become a part of her camp, claiming that he could be a deterrent against Reinhard and the Felt Camp. However, as he was left unconscious by Madelyn, having irritated her, he was left without an answer.

Natsuki Subaru

Subaru hates the man for ruining Wilhelm’s chance to bond with Reinhard, and he even lashed out at him for doing so. Finding him annoying, he would order Julius or Ferris to kill him, though they would not listen. Upon hearing further about his relationships with the rest of the Astrea family, he would be disgusted with the man, and those views would further diminish with his taking Felt hostage to force Reinhard’s hand. Heinkel, however, has likely forgotten him.

Garfiel Tinzel

In Guaral, Garfiel would often accompany the man, finding difficulty with his attitude, while Heinkel found him annoying. Later, during his encounter with Madelyn, he would bear witness to Garfiel’s might, taking on a dragon like an equal. Heinkel would find him crazy for challenging something so damningly powerful, and he would even be concerned for the boy when he would be slammed into the ground. When Garfiel got up and told him he was still fighting since he was still holding his sword, the man was left speechless. As the fight would progress, he would be in awe and fear of Garfiel, who would manage to both toss the dragon by its tail and withstand its breath. Ultimately, Heinkel would assist the boy in his fight by flinging him high into the sky, allowing him to achieve victory.

Felt Camp

Felt

Heinkel wishes to take her down in the Royal Selection simply so that Reinhard would suffer. Meanwhile, her view of Heinkel is negative due to his little outburst in the Water Raiment Inn, causing the bonding between Wilhelm and Reinhard to break down. Wanting to give him a piece of her mind, she would confront him with Reinhard, where, after the Witch Cult began their attack, he would hold his sword to her throat just to keep Reinhard in place. With Otto’s help, she and Reinhard would take him down. They remain on bad terms.

After meeting again in Arc 9 on opposing sides, with Felt being held hostage by his group, she took the time to poke into Heinkel's past and his relationship with both Louanna and Reinhard, something which led to their relationship deteriorating further, to the point that Al had failed to prevent Heinkel from killing her several times.

Flam and Grassis Remendis

Due to his uncouth and abusive behavior, the twins hold disdain towards him, to the point that they were looking forward to giving Heinkel a beating, which they did while they were on opposing sides. During the fight, Heinkel, despite facing this hatred and beating, did not want to hurt them, and even when he was forced to, he closed his eyes so as to avoid having to see his own actions.

Royal Army

Marcos Gildark

Fifteen years before the main story, Marcos and Heinkel were very good friends. Following Marcos' resignation from the Royal Army due to his dissatisfaction with the work he had to do (lock up innocent people from the slums, rather than help them get their lives back on their feet), Heinkel repeatedly went to visit him, trying to convince him to rejoin the Royal Army. This eventually resulted in young Reinhard–who wanted to help his father out in any way possible–to wish and gain the Divine Protection of Mind Manipulation and manipulate Marcos to rejoin the ranks of the Kingdom's Knights.

It's unknown how Heinkel's and Marcos' relationship continued after that event.

Nine Divine Generals

Madelyn Eschart

Heinkel has encountered Madelyn twice. The first time, he would freeze in fear of her, instantly recognizing her as an incredible threat. However, already enraged by his slaughtering of her flying dragons, she would become angrier by learning of his cowardice, and she would proceed to send him flying. The second time, she would be possessing the dragon Mezoreia, intensifying his fear of her. On the other hand, she would regard him as nothing more than a puny human, pummeling him for a second time.

Moguro Hagane

Like with Madelyn, Moguro would find the man annoying for having killed so many of his golems. Again, Heinkel would freeze in fear of the Steelman, recognizing the Divine General as far out of his league, and he would be promptly beaten by the great Meteor.

Vollachians

Rowan Segmunt

Though they can’t necessarily be called friends, they seemed to get along over drinks, Heinkel even telling tales of his woe and depression to the man.
