The Value of Life (命の価値) is the thirty-third episode and the eighth episode of Season 2 of the Re:Zero anime.
Plot
Subaru and Otto regroup with Ram, who explains Roswaal has ordered her assistance despite her skepticism. Ram clarifies Garfiel’s role: as the Sanctuary’s guardian, he cannot leave the Tomb while Emilia attempts her trials. Subaru, however, insists on confronting Garfiel directly to break the deadlock.
Subaru confronts Roswaal in his study, accusing Beatrice of Witch Cult affiliation after discovering her possession of a Gospel. Roswaal dismisses the claim, clarifying the book is a Book of Wisdom, a relic tied to her role as the Forbidden Library’s keeper. Beatrice calls it a Gospel only because it lacks a true name. Roswaal then instructs Subaru to manipulate Beatrice by declaring, "I am that person," exploiting a loophole in her contract to force her allegiance. Though distrustful, Subaru reluctantly agrees, threatening to punch Roswaal’s face if the plan fails. When Subaru pointedly asks if Roswaal is their enemy, the margrave deflects with a coy denial.
The trio plans to return to the mansion, but limited transportation (only Patrasche is available) complicates their escape. Garfiel ambushes them, having deduced their strategy. Ram attempts to negotiate by fully disclosing their plan, but Garfiel rebuffs her, invoking the phrase "Hoshin was Banan’s sunset", a warning that defiance will lead to ruin. When diplomacy fails, Ram distracts Garfiel while Subaru and Otto flee.
Otto summons Arlam villagers to guide them through Sanctuary’s barrier, but a fully transformed Garfiel pursues. Subaru surrenders, but Garfiel ignores his plea and swipes at him with a lethal claw strike, only for Otto to intercept the blow, bisecting his torso. Enraged villagers attack Garfiel to buy time, but he massacres them effortlessly. Patrasche sacrifices herself to shield Subaru, who awakens later in a frozen, abandoned Sanctuary. Before he can process the apocalyptic winter landscape, the Great Rabbit devours him alive.
Subaru revives after Emilia completes her first trial, his mind shattered by the loop’s trauma. Echidna summons him to her Castle of Dreams for a second tea party, noting his unnerving calmness stems from the stabilized Witch Factor pf Sloth within him. She offers to erase the vow she imposed earlier in exchange for his gratitude. Subaru coldly leverages her greed, demanding cooperation, which delights her.
Overwhelmed, Subaru finally confesses his Return by Death ability, a secret he’s never shared with anyone. Echidna feigns ignorance but admits she’s observed his "resurrections" and hungers to dissect the phenomenon. Subaru collapses emotionally, lamenting his isolation, while Echidna manipulates his vulnerability, positioning herself as his only "ally" who can bear his truth.
